Even at the age of four or five, they're going to be a bit confused when they go to school and most of the other kids have mums and dads if nobody has explained to them that having two mums or two dads is perfectly ok, and why their family might be a bit different to the more common type. And of course, you also have all the other kids in the class wondering why wee Shakira McClafferty has two mums but nae dad etc. To be honest, I've always thought that 99% of the hand-wringing about issues that were once upon a time taboo, homosexuality, same sex couples etc, is simply because there are a huge number of adults who deep down are far too embarrassed and/or prejudiced to want to discuss it at all. Whenever you explain these things to kids, the reaction is invariably 'oh, right you are then' and then they go off doing whatever it was they were doing before without giving it much more thought. The noise is a screen to protect the sensibilities of emotionally backward adults, not protecting kids from learning about things that are perfectly natural in any case.
