Ha! I see you're so insecure about this that you gave me a red arrow. I take it the truth hurts? Don't take my word for it - check out the discography at the official Pixies website and see what comes up as their first album.

To be fair, it's an EP, rather than an LP. If that distinction counts in this conversation. On CD you always tended to see it bundled on the end of Surfer Rosa. I'd probably always go with Surfer as their debut myself but in any event they were untouchable from Pilgrim through Doolittle so either is a decent shout for the topic.

Yeah, I’d say it’s an EP too. “Mini LP” is neither here nor there.

It’s a real shame the Pixies have become such a shameless parody of themselves nowadays.

Much as they're not really my thing, and they're a bunch of dicks, I'd have to vote for the Stone Roses.

But personal favourites include Throwing Muses, Blondie, Julian Cope (World Shut Your Mouth), Idlewild (Hope Is Important) and Beck (Mellow Gold).

Everyone says that.. It's not a studio album. It's a mini LP.

What an angry reaction. I'll be sure to give you more now

I've never heard anyone refer to it as anything other than their first album. Why would it not be a studio album? Was it recorded in a field??

I think 8 tracks is on the lengthy side for an EP - 4,5 or 6 being the usual. Maybe this came about as their other records have plenty more tracks and it seems short by their standards??

World shut your mouth is an excellent shout.

Still blindingly good live, though. Only time I was slightly disappointed was at the Kelvingrove Bandstand - nowhere near loud enough for them.

Well, I mean it is an EP. On the long side in terms of number of tracks but then several of the tunes are pretty short as well. By the old vinyl physical standards that seperate an EP from LP, it's an EP.

Albums tend to refer to LPs, right? But it depends on how you frame the conversation.

I think you can just nominate The Pixies and be on safe ground whichever record you're referring to. But I probably think of Surfer Rosa is being the first proper album.

(And ditto Mellow Gold, which I expect someone to be along shortly to say was not Beck's first, either. I'm probably on dodgier ground there, tbh.)

Yes...but for me it's still an album, albeit probably a mini album ( which definitely were a thing - cheaper than standard LPs for marketing to the more skint end of the buying public). Maybe we should just refer to it as Pixies first release, then there's no argument.

Every one a gem, but I'll still go with Doolittle being the best album I've ever heard.

Planet of Sound is a quality tune. Also love Letter ro Memphis but for me it's not their best.

For me Surfer Rosa has the best individual tunes in Gigantic and Where is My Mind, and i love the Steve Albini production on it, but Doolittle is probably the more solid, coherent standard from start to finish.

Bone Machine and Break my Body are the pick for me on Surfer Rosa and I've always thought Distance = Rate x Time is an underrated gem on Trompe le Monde.

Laser guided melodies - excellent shout.

Echo the oasis, guns n roses and stone roses shouts, all amazing albums. Don't think any of them were bettered. Morning glory was good tho.

I'll add Kiss - Kiss. They still play 5 or so of the songs every tour.

Extreme - Extreme. Maybe not as good as pornograffitti but some cracking guitar riffs on there.

Van Halen - Zero. Technically not an album but an EP. It's got songs that feature in most if not all of the DLR albums.
