GNU_Linux
12 team playoff expansion building support Amid fear of fan disinterest and dominance of a few teams from the same region, FBS commissioners are considering expanding the College Football Playoff from not just four to eight teams, but possibly into double digits, sources tell The Athletic. “I sense 12 teams is building support,” one Power 5 athletic director told The Athletic. Of the 28 available spots in the playoff since its inception in 2014, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Oklahoma have occupied 20, creating an exclusive postseason each year that has left major conferences in the cold and regions of the national college football fanbase without a rooting interest at the end of the season. Another suggested option in a larger field of playoff participants is an automatic bid for the highest-ranked Group of 5 champion, guaranteeing that elite smaller schools outside of the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, Pac-12 and ACC would never be shut out of the Playoff completely. Expansion would likely ensure that a Power 5 conference champion would always make the Playoff. The Pac-12, Big 12 and Big Ten have all had seasons where they did not have a team qualify for the four-team Playoff. The bowl system outside of the Playoff, however, could have further devaluation. “I don’t know how the bowls survive if they expand, to be honest,” a bowl executive told The Athletic. Read more about the potential CFP expansion in the Go Deeper section below. What changed? Stewart Mandel, editor-in-chief, college football: The commissioners aren't oblivious to the nation's Alabama-Clemson fatigue. There's increasing concern that the unanticipated dominance of a select few teams in the same part of the country is affecting interest in the sport as a whole. Expanding the Playoff might not change who wins the national championship, but automatic berths for conference champions would ensure every part of the country is included and it would theoretically get some fresh faces into the dance. Last year, for example, Iowa State and Cincinnati would have been included in a 10- or 12-team field.

It turns out you can't make millions of dollars out of your student athletes without allowing them to share in some of it.
