Giggs explaining drink-driving isn't a football reason, he's a football man and football manager and wants to pick him, plus he wants to represent his nation, means he is 'happy'  . Tells news conference Lawrence should 'be able to get on with his career' - crash only happened last week; hearing in fortnight - and is 'understandably a bit down' but played OK.

Interesting (naïve?) approach... I expected "innocent before proven guilty" or "rehabilitation" angles.

You'd have expected him to miss this double-header IMO. That's what happened with Barry Bannan, IIRC.

Bump.

Both pled guilty to drink driving, and leaving the scene of an accident (at which there were passengers of whom 2 were injured).

They received 180hr community service and were banned from driving for 2 years.

Both were about 2 times the legal limit when breathalysed though this was a good spell after the accident - as they did not return to the scene until 45mins later. Bennett had been sick at the pub and Lawrence was described as having been "quite dependent on alcohol" after the death of his mother. He crashed into Bennett before colliding with roadsigns and a lamppost while driving back from a team-bonding session at a pub. By chance an ambulance saw the smash and treated the injured including a team-mate whose leg injury could last 15 months.

Although not mentioned in BBC article, my paper says the probation service asked the judge to spare them jail "due to concerns they would struggle in custody".

Derby have fined them 6 weeks wages.
