I'm glad Barry from Scarborough clarified that he thinks that England should end the Barnett formula applying to a future independent Scotland.

pandarilla
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Billy Bragg on this thread yet. I saw him back in 2005 and he was banging on about the delayed need for a left (ish) English nationalism, along similar lines to the Scots or the Irish. Since then he's continued to keep at it - but I don't see much traction elsewhere. He always appears on newsnight (usually after brexit or after an election, or even when the Labour party slagged off the English flag wavers and it became a thing in the media). He's fighting a good fight but I'm not sure he's winning.

Granny's contribution to peace and goodwill at Christmas! I hope that you get over your post-election angst and depression soon. I see Morrison’s have changed the name of Brussels Sprouts to Lincolnshire Sprouts! WTF is Wrong with these clowns. Just like the morons on the other side of the Atlantic when they changed French Fries to Freedom Fries when France refused to get involved in Iraq. What a f***in red neck

Has anyone seen Die Hard 3. The one where Bruce Willis is stark naked in Harlem except for a sign that say "I hate n******s". I suspect this is something similar. Incidentally in Die Hard 3, the sign was actually blank during recording and they added the words into the film later using CGI. Trying to work out they have done the same thing here.

John Lambies Doos
Now that Scotland and Wales have a parliament (and sometimes Northern Ireland too!) a correction is often required when talking about the British parliament. Not strictly true. Wales and NI do not have parliaments, merely assemblies

He's got absolutely no control over house prices in villages or anywhere in the country. He's never forgot his roots, and gives a huge amount of his time to support causes that will genuinely help those at the bottom of society.

What is going on north of the border doesn't seem to register. About anything. At all. Don't tell the ugly sisters though, they seem to think they're 'big' down here for some unknown reason and we don't want to upset them. I remember a decade ago a Rangers man telling me the Gers were huge in Germany. Something about a giant army base or some shite. I was too busy laughing to pay attention

The consensus is that they had little choice, but it's certainly something they'd prefer to forget. We were taught in school about the 30 years war etcetera but the emphasis was on suffering and the futility of war rather than glory. And they were quite happy to supply SKF ball bearings to both sides during WW11, and there was an unfounded story that Oerlikon moved some of their cannon manufacturing to Sweden during the war. I note that you mentioned Saab in a further post, it is not well know but earlier Saabs were fitted with Triumph engines, we used to carry them over from Felixstowe to Gothenberg.

You've picked me up wrongly as my mention of Billy Bragg's house was not malicious, I have stayed in the village with friends from time to time and was always impressed with the location of his house, anyway I'm told he has it up for sale. I have never associated socialism or communism with poverty but rather as an ideology and means of distributing wealth fairly. If Bragg makes a healthy profit from the sale, and I'm told from my friend it could run into a few million, then good luck to him. You will recall Marx's comment to his colleague when they were seeing off a friend at the rail station and the friend got onto a third class cabin, the colleague turned to Marx and said that one day we will have only third class for all, Marx immediately reminded him that the cause of communism was that we will all travel first class eventually.

We were taught in school about the 30 years war etcetera but the emphasis was on suffering and the futility of war rather than glory. When I was at High School ( Stranraer ) in the mid/late '60's, history was very much taught as a series of facts, and events. The history teacher was in his 40's, and had been one of those due to take part in the invasion of Japan. When asked about the morality of the atom bombing of Hiroshima, and Nagasaki, he didn't venture a view other than he was just glad that it had ended the war, and he was alive. A few months before the Highers, my family moved to Somerset. I stayed behind in lodgings for the exam period. In my room , there was a bookcase with a 12 volume history of the WW2 period. Descriptions, photos, wars such as the Winter War in Finland. A real eye opener for me. Edited December 25, 2019 by beefybake

How dare he live in a house, I've never heard the like. He should be in a one bedroom flat in London. But he probably can't afford one.
