Hedgecutter
Going to be interesting if Aberdeen/shire gets put into Tier 1 to see what my local pub does seeing as it has temporarily closed "due to operational reasons". This happened as soon as furlough was announced so to me it's glaringly obvious that they were using Tier 2 as an excuse to close up shop and take the wages, but they'll obviously have no excuse in a Tier 1 area.

I expect with the uncertainty of the tiers and the possibility of a vaccine come the spring, hundreds if not thousands of small businesses especially in hospitality will now opt to close and ride this out until the spring.

Firstly if youre going to counter my opinion with some research you have been doing fancying citing the source rather than just a screenshot. Also it says symptomatic people I'm sure we all have experience pre covid of people going into public places, especially public transport with heavy colds/ flu therefore mandating what isn't a big issue for the population to adopt to help keep cases of flu low in my opinion isn't that big a deal but I'm sure more and more research will be done and things will be recommended to keep people healthy over winter.

Its from the WHO guidelines for an influenza pandemic. Despite numerous studies, there's no evidence masks reduce transmission of flu (there's none either that they actually reduce transmission of covid either) so i've no idea why you suddenly want masks for the flu season. If they worked then we'd have been wearing them already, especially after 2017/18. A cultural change is required if we want people not to go to work / out whilst coughing and spluttering. And that starts with employers not being dicks about people declaring themselves unfit for work due to colds etc. Edited November 10, 2020 by Todd_is_God

Surely they have some effect. But I agree a change is required hopefully that will see folk taking time off when they need it for a whole range of issues not just cold/ flu.

I mean they explain the reasoning in the very same picture you quoted. Essentially they don't work (there are many papers on this), but because the explanation of how they could work is plausible, it will give the public the impression something is being done.

They are hardly Tory heartlands. I don’t think there is anything wrong with pointing out the absurdity of this tier system. It’s glaringly obvious that she’s playing politics, keeping areas in the same tier as their neighbours with 4 times the infection rate.

They've been doing it in Japan and other Asian countries for a long time. The flu has been deliberately downplayed as a public health issue in western countries to the extent that you can't make a comparison between the mortality rates of COVID-19 and influenza pandemics on here without having scientifically illiterate posters taking umbrage.
