Distant Doonhamer
UK Government minister George Eustice predicting masks will be optional from 19th July and says he won’t choose to wear one. Well bully for him. A real man of the people obviously. His choice re an entirely optional act is of consequence to nobody surely.
scottmcleanscontacts
We've already done a massive trial of dexamethasone in Covid (RECOVERY). It reduces mortality at 28 days if you require oxygen or a ventilator, but of no benefit otherwise (and might actually worsen Covid outcomes if given unnecessarily). It's hilarious seeing Hancock push this a a Great British Breakthrough[emoji769], given dex is an ancient steroid that we've used in a wide number of conditions for years and is cheap as chips. I can't really see a plausible pharmacological reason invermectin might work. Pleased there's going to be a proper randomised controlled trial on it though, but my gut feeling is it will either be of no benefit or may actually cause worse outcomes, like hydroxychloroquine. Either way, I think any clinical effect will be small.Quite.Hadn't realised it was already trialled but was one of the first drugs that sprung to mind when the use of a trial was talked about on this thread a few days ago, seemed relatively obvious it could be used for breathing problems.

Distant Doonhamer
2,999 new cases of COVID-19 reported (2969 yesterday which was reported as highest during the pandemic I think). 40,952 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results 7.7% of these were positive 5 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive 17 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (down from 18) 177 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (up from 170) 3,695,303 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 2,631,533 have received their second dose 14 deaths reported over the last 3 day's figures (4,5,5). Have some faith in Magic
Are we currently the most covidy country in the world? I saw something yesterday that Dheli had 111 cases and 0.15% positivity on Tuesday. Considering where they were a few weeks ago that's pretty impressive.

Paco
I think we’re simply doing too many PCR tests, pretty sure we’re the highest-testing country pro-rata in the world at the moment, and by some distance. Nearly 9,000 positives in the last three days alone. The Scottish Government have made several references to ‘it used to be 10%, now it’s about 5%’ who show up in hospital after testing positive. If we don’t have 450 unique admissions to hospital over the next few days we can file even their seemingly optimistic stats in the bin.
