"Same old Labour. Spending other people's money. Who's going to pay for it." They would also be attacked for the lack of PPE for NHS staff. Also for not acting quickly enough to halt the spread of this disease. Not that I am suggesting any bias in the media. Definitely these two. Probably also the third one, too.

Normally I would see this neighbour on a regular basis, but I'm hardly out the door now, and even when I am it's usually the back yard I'm in, so I'm not sure about his prognosis, I'm only going by what my wife said. As I said his daughter's a nurse, she'll keep him right about his entitlements, I'd think. Update - he was talking to my wife again - she was out painting the summer seat in the front garden, and he kept well back - his daughter is chasing this up on his behalf. However, the in between neighbours apparently have Covid-19 in the house. We share a path and an entry with them, although to date our paths haven't crossed, basically because neither myself nor my wife has been out (other than my wife in the front garden) and me leaving the bins out every week. They seem to be in and out of the house like yoyos, but that's maybe just paranoia on our part. The parents have no need to be out, they're both in their late 70s, he's a lollipop man and she's a classroom/kitchen assistant and the schools are closed. The son must be furloughed by now but the daughter works in a care home. The mother was in hospital last week and apparently contracted it in there.

And Spain and Italy are only easing slightly from far stricter lockdown rules than the UK.

ICTChris
What would a lockdown be like in countries like Spain and Italy during summer? Heat waves kill people as well, I'm sure a few years ago thousands of deaths in France and Spain were attributed to a significant heatwave.
doulikefish
No surprise to hear the "jezza" hb wants to get on with getting out of lockdown before the actual real number of dead is known

More people will be back at work from the beginning of May and restrictions on socialising will probably be gone from the start of June which is the 12 weeks estimated at the very start. Those that are vunerable or just terrified of the virus will be free to stay inside.
ICTChris
I think people want to see some sort of end point to this lockdown and want to understand what they are looking for - levelling off of hospital deaths, infection rates, ICU occupancy? I understand why people want that but I also understand why the government and health authorities don't want to publicise it. It's not like they can say - "500 deaths a day and we're all godo to go lads!" They will want to take a lot of things into account. I have seen it written that if the cases level off, you really need the lockdown to last another two to three weeks at an absolute minimum to get things back under control before any easing. Maybe the easing could be very incremental, stuff that could be easily rolled back quickly if cases rise, or could be done geographically but that comes with pitfalls as well.

Gaz
We'll come out of lockdown as soon as the Government's cost-benefit analysis determines the projected amount of people dying from months and months of economic and social stagnation is more than the projected amount of people dying from the virus and associated effect on the NHS.

Detournement
Is not the case that it should be less spreadable here during the summer due to warmer more humid air? Whereas any advantage India or Africa has in temperature is outweighed by lack of sanitation and living conditions. It's possible that poorer people in poorer countries might have stronger immune systems as well which will help there.
