Guest
Peruvian state continuing to shoot dead impoverished, indigenous protestors. Almost 50 now murdered. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jan/19/peru-lima-president-protests-clashes Quote The deaths have also stirred longstanding grievances in Puno and much of the largely poor southern Andes, which is home to many of the mines that drive the country’s economy, and attractions like Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca, which account for the vast majority of its income from tourism. “The riches from those raw materials never reach our towns; they are shared among the elite in Lima,” said Samillan. “We are part of this country. We want quality of life with good healthcare and education too. But when we raised our voice in protest asking them to respect our rights they responded with blows and bullets.” (Marco Antonio Samillan was a student doctor shot dead while administering first aid to an injured fellow protestor).

ICTChris
There has been a wave of attacks against Iranian military facilities by drones. An ammunition factory, Iranian Army HQ, oil refinery and factory manufacturing drones are all named as having been hit. No-one has claimed responsibility yet but some partisan sources are blaming Israeli Air force drones launched from an Israeli air base in Azerbijan. Israel has a close relationship with Azerbaijan and has supplied them with military equipment including drones and loitering munitions but I’ve not heard anyone say there is an actual Israeli base in Azerbijan. Iran and Azerbijan have clashed diplomatically over border disputes and issues that Azeris have over Iran’s tacit and not-so tacit support for Armenia in the countries ongoing conflict.

welshbairn
Washington seems to be taking this Chinese balloon awfully seriously, given that most pundits are saying that it can't do anything existing satellites can't do much better anyway. Could it be picking up signals that the satellites can't though? Or is it just the symbolism of invading American airspace they're concerned about? @renton P.S. Apparently it's over North Carolina and they intend to shoot it down over the Atlantic. They say it's not as easy as it sounds, it could carry on along way if it's not totally destroyed and presumably they want to examine what's left. Sounds like a job for some experimental laser weapon. Edited February 4, 2023 by welshbairn

One Chinese spy balloon “drifted past Hawaii and across Florida” as it “circumnavigated the globe” in 2019, according to a US air force intelligence account reported by CNN. Ryder said the US had found a way of spotting the approaching balloons and the most recent one was tracked from the time it approached in the Aleutian islands in the north Pacific. “When you look at the scope of this programme – and the fact that we know that these balloons have been spotted operating over at least five continents and regions like Latin America, South America, south-east Asia, east Asia and Europe – it demonstrates why, for the department of defence, China remains the pacing challenge,” The China Balloon Programme effortlessly surpassing 'Ice Man', the informant on Iraq's WMD capability, as the most obvious bullshit cover for American imperialism yet.

Could it be picking up signals that the satellites can't though? That seems the likely issue given the antenna farm on the payload. For imaging, satellites are the answer except for near real time imaging that can be difficult because of orbital mechanics. The various idiosyncrasies of the atmosphere can suppress the ability to intercept certain bands and strengths of signals from the geosynchronous birds, and the LEO intel birds are all on predictable orbits. The more interesting tidbit in the stories was the fact that NORAD admitted that it had been missing a number of those kinds of incursions due to filter settings on the radar. I suspect a look back through recorded radar data will show an extensive program of floating slow moving signals intelligence platforms around the world, and it may well be a case of the PLAA doing what they want to get results they desire that are less than congruent with those of the leaders of the PRC. Weather balloons are tracked in the U.S., and more generally worldwide, by using a transponder in the equipment package. Worldwide radars are generally tuned or filtered to ignore certain targets, those most often being slow moving, low reflectivity targets. These targets are often large flocks of birds or bats, or similar phenomena…but a non-metalized balloon would return little, if any signal, as well. It’s literally impossible to use a non-filtered radar return display due to the massive number of false or questionable returns, and in the U.S. non-transponder targets are filtered off air traffic displays above 18,000 feet…which is the justification for downing the more recent objects in the 20,000-40,000 foot levels…they would not show up on ATC radars at all.
