Turin or Milan

Thinking of going to the Nation League finals in October, a semi each in Milan and Turin, and final in Milan. It's only 45 minutes by train between the two, so where I base myself doesn't matter too much. Anyone willing to sell either city to me? I'm veering towards Turin because it sounds a bit more compact in the centre so good for a wander. There's a fair choice of airports too, so any particularly shitty ones I'd like to know about.

If you want to go sight seeing then Milan, by far.

Interested to know why you are so definite in your advice.

I have visited both at least annually for the last 20 years. To be fair always en route to (primarily) Torino or another Northern destination such as Genoa, Reggio Emilia or further down to Parma.

I am wholly biased but Torino is a hugely underrated destination, its compact, and is rich in modernity and historical interest.

Having said that Milan is far easier and cheaper to reach even if you travel via Bergamo. For that reason I would say base yourself in Milan with some time and a stay in Torino.

Ive been to both, Turin seemed very industrial, Milan seemed very touristy. Not really anymore than that to be honest.

I'm sure there is a hige amount of Turin I didnt see, which is why I said if he wants sight seeing to go for Milan

Been to Milan a few times and it's a wonderful city with plenty to see and do.

Only been to Turin once a few years ago in January to watch Torino V Internazionale on a day trip. I got an early train and the last one back to Milan. I wish I'd given myself longer because it seemed a superb city and quite big too. Though it was absolutely freezing all day. Even colder that Gayfield park and Pittodrie on a winter's day...

Seems as good a thread as any to ask ...

Has anyone been to a show at La Scala in Milan?

We're heading back early next year and fancy giving it a try, it won't be cheap as decent tickets are between 100 & 200 euro (although you can pay 28 euro for a seat with absolutely no view ) Just not sure if it's worth it!?

Aye, went a few years ago to an opera I'd never heard of. Went for the cheap seats option and you're right, they're absolutely not worth bothering with, false economy.

Actually not sure why we went apart from the fact that having lived there we felt we really should go. The inside of the theatre is amazing and a marvel of acoustic engineering but the bourgeois feel of the whole event left me cold.

If I had my time there again it would be the Verona Arena but in the warmer months.

Cool - thanks for the reply - we've already decided not to go, it was going to be an obscure opera that was set to run for nearly four hours ... so f'ck that basically.

We might try the tour though.

Thanks.

Definitely advise seeing inside as it's incredible. Conversely, there's nothing distinguishing about the outside. If you haven't already done so on a previous visit then you're there, be sure to go to Luini's for the panzerotti.

Took my daughter's partner there when they were over and he has literally been dreaming about it ever since.

Cheers - always happy to try out recommended places 👍🏻

We saw La Scala from the outside last time - fairly unremarkable like you say.

Ta.

In that case, just a final thing. Try Mercato centrale inside Stazione Centrale. Upmarket food court with top quality eats at reasonable prices. Try to avoid lunchtime though (the same applies to Luini's). Enjoy your trip.
