Popular Post Sherrif John Bunnell
The winner of this league can play the winner of the Atlantic League every year in football's equivalent of the Superbowl. It is funny seeing Gary Lineker getting outraged by this proposal. The same Lineker who was moaning a few weeks back about smaller nations being allowed to play on the same pitch as England.

The depth English Football has an interest in the diddy teams is always greatly overstated. I think there is a general misconception about how many people watch the EPL, no matter who is playing. Still makes Sky a shit load of money. I can imagine Sky are worried because they can't deliver the content across Europe and it would be easier for this new European league to sign a deal with someone like Amazon for World Wide rights.

Think the teams involved may find a backlash from fans. The main power that the clubs have over the national FAs is that they won't be getting their players released for international duty if they break away. Tough one for them. 15 minutes ago, Left Back said: Lots of PPV subs from abroad for the EPL from the far east etc. I’d guess the most popular non-domestic league hence why 6 English teams involved. Play some games in China etc. and it would probably be financially viable. Would likely trash Sky’s foreign subscriber base for EPL too. If the big 6 did breakaway for this it would be glorious watching the TV companies telling the EPL to hand back the cash. Can’t see the EPL letting them go and still staying in the EPL. Court cases could be epic . Will be stocking up on popcorn for this. A fair point here and I'd forgotten about the Chinese Market, which is ripe for fleecing. I think appeal for PPVs domestically might be a challenge for them. It would indeed be glorious to see the broadcasters going nuts and the league in a Setanta-esque meltdown. 24 minutes ago, GNU_Linux said: If a Superleague ever comes to fruition imo it'd be likely they'd play some games abroad where they'd rake in the cash from both ticket & merchandise sales. The clubs are more or less independent from the gate money and even the merchandise to an extent. All about the broadcasters.

grazza
Is this clubs intention to leave their domestic league to play in this? or stay in league and assume this is equivalent of champ league e.g. 20 games or so? Or that they can Colt team in their domestic league while playing in this?

The depth English Football has an interest in the diddy teams is always greatly overstated. I think there is a lot of areas that interest in the Premier League is overstated. I suspect the interest from overseas is one of them, as is the idea that fans want to see them play all the big teams all of the time. There was a quote from a journalist who said he’d been invited to a presentation the “Big six” were doing in a London hotel. They were saying that the fans didn’t want another Leicester and that they want the big teams to be winning the league. Completely out of touch with reality of what fans actually want, which is to win things but to make it a bit of competition at the same time.

Sorry, you want figures to back up that significantly less people are interested in shit teams faving each other/big six sides than big six sides meeting? Lol. You could quickly come up with a reasonably strong new top six in England in support and interest terms so the threat is more credible there. Suspect this is a game of brinksmanship to get a Champions League format more to their taste.
diegomarahenry
The Champions league is more to do with TV audience than anything else, the biggest TV audiences in England, Spain and Germany are always going to get 3-4-5 places in the Champions league. They should rebrand it the European elite league or something. No one outside these countries has won the Champions league since 2010. Have a Champions league of only champions, no qualification rounds, an Elite league of coefficient qualifying teams and a Europa league. Sky and the Champions league format has ruined domestic football in several countries. Great names of the past like Benfica, Ajax, Anderlecht, Sporting Lisbon, Red Star, will never get to a final again under the current format. If you went in to a sports shop in Prague or Brussels or Warsaw or Vienna you would be more likely to find a Barcelona or Chelsea shirt than that of a local team. It is impossible to compete due to the gulf in finance. Much like Scottish clubs and the old firm.

Whilst this is true, and there is a lot about UEFA that is ruining the game, making things worse by creating a closed shop super-league is not going to do anything towards rectifying that.

Left Back
Premier League’s statement has them officially financially bricking it. Dressing it up as the money they contribute to the pyramid but anyone can see through that.

Left Back
This has been coming for a long time. The big 6 have been after a bigger slice of the broadcasting pie for a few years. All so they can move money from our pockets to the players pockets, at the will of agents.
