Donathan
Curling world is in shock as the great Norwegian player Thomas Ulsrud passes away at 50 after a long cancer battle. Ulsrud led Norway to an Olympic silver medal in 2010, and was also well known for the team wearing crazy trousers.

Ignoramus
Did think that might be coming despite them announcing a new line up after Vicky Wright’s retirement. She was doing a lot of media work and charity stuff and the thought of going back to the grind after claiming the Olympic gold must’ve been quite difficult to get up for. Going out on top is never a bad idea.

flyingscot
Going out on top indeed. She could have probably kept going but hard building a new team and if you have other things you want to move onto doing then its understandable. Every member of the team from 2014 has moved on.
Caledonian1
This week I have been doing some voluntary driving work for the World Mixed Curling in Aberdeen. It's been a great exerience driving the teams from their hotel to the Lang Stracht and back. This is not the highest profile world championship, nor the highest quality. There are world champions and Olympic silver medalists competing but this tournament seems to be more about growing the game globally. 35 countries are represented and they include some of the least likely: Nigeria, Mexico and Hong Kong. Ok, some of these nations have been absolutely hammered when playing the likes of Canada, Sweden or Scotland but thir enthusiasm has been infectious., Whilst many of the aforementioned nations do not have a curling rink they are mostly represented by ex-pats who curl in Canada. However, last night I was speaking with the Portuguese and they are close to confirming dedicated curling ice in Lisbon. Had to laugh when i asked the Indians how many curlers there were in their population of 1.3 billion and the response I got was...."6 or 7...." They too were living and playing out of Canada but are actively trying to get ice in India for locals. After each match the teams have all sat together and as is traditional at lowly club level the winner pays for their opposite numbers drink. The cameradery has been brilliant to see and it re-enforces my belief that there is nothing like sport to break down barriers and bring people closer together from across the globe. Last night was the traditional "losers party" attended by the teams who have not progreesed to the knock out stages (flights back today or tomorrow which were pre-booked as for most their exit was hugely predictable) It was great to see them socailise together and get thoroughly pished.....they had a singer hired for the night and it seemed all the "losers" were up dancing and shouting to the Proclaimers 500 Miles. Tonight Scotland play Sweden in the quarter finals
Caledonian1
Scotland into the final after beating Sweden 6-5 after an extra end. Switzerland and Canada were tied at 5-5 going into the 6th but Canada scored 5 to end it right there. Scotland v Canada final this afternoon at 2.30pm....was tempted to go into Aberdeen to watch but booked golf for this afternoon
Donathan
Scotland’s mens and womens teams playing in the European Championships in Sweden this week. For the men it’s Bruce Mouat’s Olympic team again and on the women’s side it’s a new look team led by Rebecca Morrison. The men have cruised into the semi finals, currently sitting at 7-1 with the only loss coming yesterday against Switzerland. They’re currently playing Italy in a game that only matters for seeding (The Italians have also made the semi finals alongside Sweden and Switzerland) On the womens side it was more of a struggle but they won their last two games to finish 5-4 and snuck into the semis on H2H. They will take on Denmark in the second semi final at 3pm this afternoon. The first semi final sees Italy face Switzerland.
flyingscot
Scotland hand the Italians their first loss. I think that will make it Italy v Scotland again in the Semis with Swedes and Swiss in the other. Swedes not looked quite the same without Edin.

A 7-4 win for Scotland with an end to spare over Italy in the semi final. 8th end was decisive with the scores tied at 3-3, the Italian skip got his last stone wrong leaving Mouat a chance for a double takeout, which he managed to do and leave all his own stones in the house to pick up a 4.Sweden v Switzerland tomorrow morning at 8am in semi final 2.

Caledonian1
Scotlands women currently 8-4 up in bronze medal match (after 7 ends) So just need to manage the rest of the game for a medal. In control of 8th end too. Would be tremendous for Rebecca Morrison and her team to get a medal as taking over the mantle from Eve must be a bit like replacing Fergie at Man Utd. Also I think it was the worlds last year that she and the Scotland team had to withdraw after once match due to Covid.
