Austin MacPhee

A thread to keep track of what David Grohl is up to at Villa and Scotland.

Ezri Konsa gave him a shout out in a post match interview after Aston Villa won against Leicester with a goal from a corner and it did have a certain similarity to our recent set piece goals for the National Team with John Souttar and Scott McTominay.

Yeah I mean I've got to shout out the set piece coach Austin, because second half he told me to make that movement and it worked.

Yeah we was actually working on set pieces that week, we do a lot with the coaches and obviously the manager and it's nice to see a couple, the one against Denmark as well went in and obviously myself as well so yeah it's good to see the work that we're doing is coming off.

Set pieces are a massive part of the game and a part I felt we could improve on which is why I brought Austin (MacPhee) in. We scored off a set play and defended very well against a team that had a height advantage on us.

I didn't even know if there was VAR so for a minute, I was thinking is this onside or offside? but obviously it's good to get a first goal. That's me got one goal and one own goal for Scotland so that's me even. It was just the shock! When do I score a heeder? so obviously I was buzzing, great ball in by John McGinn and the set-piece coach, Austin (MacPhee) works a lot on that. The manager said if I don't score this game or the next game I'm going back of the park so luckily I got it.

Have to hand it to Austin MacPhee, he's making a difference. Cool guy to boot!

Yeah there has been a massive improvement in the set pieces and we are starting to get a good return on him. Good work from MacPhee and good from Clarke to realise we needed the help and bring him in.

It's quite funny no team has picked up on the big looping corner to the back post yet. Long may it continue.

Especially now McCoist has decided to mention it in commentary every bloody game. I suspect we’ll be working on new things soon!

Teams will eventually over commit to it and we will get free headers at the front post

It's hardly the only set piece we've worked since he came in, there is a very clear improvement and a real variety to them too. He might be an utter weirdo and not cut out to be a manager, but he seems to be very good at that one very specific thing. Look at the success Northern Ireland had with them too when he was involved there.

Hendry's goal was very similar to Souttar's against Denmark but there must be a lot more going on in the penalty area that allows one of our main set piece threats alone at the back post to set up the goal. The goal analysis never goes into too much detail but it'd be interesting to see what blocking or dummy runs are being made to stop the opposition picking up Cooper/Hanley.
