I think most people were amazed she got the job after authorising lethal force to kill an innocent man at point blank range on a crowded train after he was surrounded by polis.

More seriously you would imagine Sir Stephen House will be throwing his hat in the ring, hope the good folk of London don't expect the police to turn up to car crashes any faster than within a working week.

Someone pointed out earlier she’s get a half a million pound payoff + pension

While the family of Jean Charles De Menezes received just over £100,000 in compensation for his murder

Why did she get a payoff when she decided to leave?

While not certain, I think “payoff” is inaccurate. She’s done way more years than required to access her police pension but as she has stayed in the service until now all her built up pension rights will be deferred. Now she has resigned she can access those accrued allowances. Given it’s based on final salary and years service (more complicated for the most senior officers than rank and file I believe) that’s what she will now be getting. Not a payoff as is being inferred.

The pay off, if true but I suspect not, is obscene but surely the pension is a given and not a surprise to anyone?

Its not a pay off, its the commutation portion of her pension. A retiring PC would receive about 100k, a Superintendent would get about 250k so 500k is probably roundabout what she’d get given she first left the Met in an ACPO rank.

What kind of pension scheme do the police have if you can get 2/3rds of your salary as pension as well as the (25% of pension pot presumably) as a lump sum.

Tends to be about 50-55% of salary if its the old final salary pension and yeh the commutation is pretty large, but pretty shitty life expectancy post retirement also so it takes and it gives in a way. That said its about 14% of your salary you pay every month into it so its not a cheap pension to be paying into.
