ICTChris
On 16/01/2023 at 11:21, ICTChris said: Pro-Russia commentators have jumped on comments by a Ukrainian former presidential spokesman who said that Ukraine had shot down the missile and the debris caused the damage - this seems to be untrue and doesn’t match with the information that is currently available. Arestovych, who was a current spokesman not former, has resigned after his comments on the Dnipro attack. 20 hours ago, jagfox said: Seems like Soledar is now under full Russian control. I assume UA withdrew their remaining forces. Seems like they have - the next line of positions from Soledar are elevated and thus will be very hard for Russian forces to take. There is also some talk that Wagner suffered such high casualties in the fight for Soledar and Bakhmut that they may be unable to push on any further. This marries up with what happened in the summer when Russia took Lysychansk and Severodonetsk - they took the territory but had to stop advancing due to the losses they suffered.
ICTChris
Putin giving a speech tomorrow. Rumours that he will announce new wave of mobilisation or formally declare war on Ukraine.
Bairnardo
A new wave of mobilisation will simply be met by more/better kit from the West, who now seem to be in a fairly comfortable groove of dismissing any residual threat from the Russians.
Silvio Tattiescone
Saw a claim that around 80% of Wagner's recruits from prisons are now dead, wounded or missing.

They're fairly clearing up the recidivism rates.

ICTChris
A Ukrainian helicopter crashed into a nursery school near Kyiv, killing several children. Also killed were several senior Ukrainian officials, including the Interior Minister. Seems like it was a tragic accident, although investigations are ongoing.

If we have another war I won't go near a nursery, school or hospital. They seem to attract disaster.
LongTimeLurker
Hopefully this is more accurate than the Daily Mail and the Apache helicopters: Edited January 18, 2023 by LongTimeLurker
Silvio Tattiescone
I'm guessing the 3 day special military operation isn't going as planned.
LongTimeLurker
Looks like the German SPD leadership really can't come to terms with the idea of having German panzers rampaging across the Ukrainian steppe again even when it is not the Wehrmacht that's going to be doing the rampaging this time. Don't mention the war I did once but I think I got away with it. Seeing a few people suggesting that the Ukrainians may receive these and that it could help them go after the Kerch Bridge again: The Russians were getting paranoid about it late last year apparently: and that might explain why Vlad feels a need to strengthen Moscow's air defences: Seems a bit too mental in escalatory terms to actually happen though. Guess it could also be about the long range drones the Ukrainians claim to be developing.
ICTChris
Some reports from Russian channels that Russian forces have started an offensive in Zaporizhia Oblast. The summit of 50+ nations assisting Ukraine has concluded at Rammstein. Ukrainian defence minister today said they are happy with the outcome and that not all assistance has been publicly announced. bennett
Countries with Leopard tanks need to tell the Germans to do one here and dish the tanks out to Ukraine.

The Leopard tanks are leased not bought so Germany has control of them. This means that Germany calls the shots and if Germany fancies trading with Russia in the future then they could be reluctant to let Ukraine have the help that they are asking for. Germany looks after Germany and no-one else.
welshbairn
Some are leased and others have been sold, it's more about the end user certificate I think, which gives Germany legal control. Not sure if they could do much if the rule was ignored though, apart from a probable monopoly on spare parts.
Cosmic Joe
Does anyone even take Germany seriously anyway? * * That's what my Polish mother in law used to say. That was one of the repeatible things after "Szwabe ****" etc. She kind of went off them after the Nazis invaded her village in 1939. But hey ho. We live and forgive
Abdul_Latif
There was an ex NATO figure on the radio yesterday (I forget who) saying that Germany would agree to sending Leopards if the US would agree to sending Abrams as they are a similar build, but it seems the US have no intention of allowing Abrams to go to Ukraine at all. Kind of get Germanys position / reluctance on it if that’s actually the case.

America claims that the Abrams is way too fuel hungry and too much training required to be practical for operating and maintaining, but it could be there's advanced tech in it they don't want the Russians to get hold of, or just that it's really expensive.
