Maybe the Russians have to stay out in the open more to spot these coming where you can target them better by mortar etc? This still looks like people with way too much time on their hands though but with self-driving car technology maybe you don't need a deluded suicide bomber dreaming about 72 virgins these days to do some of the truck bombs that caused so much carnage in Iraq and Syria? Might be effective against a hardpoint/bunker IF you had a sufficiently concealed approach route. Also against a parked vehicle. Mortars are a difficult to target accurately weapon outside clear line of sight, and finicky even with line of sight.

ICTChris
Girkin posted a typically doomery update where he compares the battle of Bakhmut to Stalingrad but casting the Ukrainians as the Soviets, who have held on in a seemingly hopeless situation while building reserves for a decisive counter attack.

welshbairn
Igor's heading for defenestration or Siberia imo. Maybe he'll escape to the Hague where he'll get well looked after for his role in MH17. Edited March 21, 2023 by welshbairn

Since the UJ-31 seems be a loitering munition delivered from a UJ-22, and targeted at static/immobile platform targets, that would match the strike and range. That’s basically a UJ-22 with an autonomous guidance sub-munition (UJ-31) that has self target selection software and an RPG-7 warhead. welshbairn
Igor getting to the nub of it. Quote At the same time, our president, his entourage and all the "rich and beautiful" VIP officials are holy and sinless ... It was not they who plundered the country, de-industrialized it, raised the retirement age, and then frivolously and completely without preparation they got into a big war. Quote Thanks to the oligarchs and the part of officials serving their interests, most of the high-tech production inherited from the USSR has been destroyed in 30 years. And now a lot is required at the front, from drones to protective equipment. Citizens themselves are throwing themselves into this. There are still no rumors that one of the oligarchs would help the defenders of the Motherland. Such an elite is a natural conductor of the economic model set by the West for embedding Russia into world capitalism as a semi-periphery of raw materials. The elite programmed by an external enemy is hardly capable of anything more than defeat. Edited March 21, 2023 by welshbairn

TxRover
24 minutes ago, bennett said: The T-54/55 is roughly equivalent to a Centurian or a M48, basically a late war follow-on. The upgraded versions sport the D10 100mm main gun that started life on late WW2 Soviet tanks. While development of advanced rounds for the D10 occurred in the 80’s, the rounds each cost 1/2 the cost of the tank itself and most are based upon the Bastion (AT-10 Stabber) in a sabot…a round that is unlikely to take long-term storage well. While they will have the gun to take on Leopard 1’s, they are under-armoured for any real offensive role against Ukraine. Conversely, they are poorly suited for a defensive role due to slow fire rate, poor fire control, and an inability to fight effectively from hull-down positions on reverse slopes due to their small and flat turret design (prohibits more than -5 degrees elevation). The T-54/55 would even be at a potential disadvantage versus an AMX-10 RC like France is sending to Ukraine, so how they are going to use these tanks is a good question. The Maxim PM M1910/30, on the other hand, was produced until 1945 and is still considered one of the finest machine guns ever made. Assuming you can maintain ammunition supply, and you are not trying to lug it around, you can’t beat it.
