He was assassinated when the rebels built a bomb into the foundations of a new football stadium in Grozny and blew it up six months after construction was finished, during a military parade. Some of his troops are undoubtedly war criminals but many are effectively dragooned into signing up on pain of reprisals. If they take heavy casualties then it’s part of the ongoing tragedy of the Chechen people since 1994. One of the best things that could happen for them is for Kadyrov rule to be undermined by this.
