McKinstry sounds like a talented enough player, and with Savoury presumably out for the bulk of the season it's an area we obviously needed to strengthen, but again this is a guy who's started just 10 senior games in his career.

Of course, because of our self-imposed transfer restrictions, this is the only sort of player we're able to bring in.

Meanwhile, Lee Kilday, unceremoniously punted after being one of our best players last season, has played every minute in all competitions for a Hamilton side that's won 7, drawn 1 and lost 0 in League One. Whereas we've shipped 19 goals so far this season, three worse than any other team in the Championship (admittedly having played a game more). After the same number of games last season we'd conceded 11.

The next month makes or breaks “the project” in my opinion. Win on Saturday and people will settle down for now. Another negative result and performance with Airdrie, Falkirk and Thistle coming up would put the manager on notice. The game was over as soon as they equalised on Saturday and everyone on and off the pitch knew it. That can’t go on.

Thought that he made Fox a better player when they played together last year, or at least you knew, when Fox went rampaging, Kilday would be there covering.  Was sorry to see him go - thought that he carried the can a bit for the defences dismal display over the last few months of that season - rather unfairly perhaps.

Yup, huge month ahead.

Pre Utd I was astounded to hear the stat that Paton had scored 5 from (think it was) 6 or 7 shots - evidently we're not getting the service to him that he needs.  Hoping that if McKinstry is a 10 and a better one than Turner; that all might take some of the pressure off the rest of the midfield having to compensate, which in turn might just stop some of the kamikaze defensive lines we've been seeing lately.....then again......

I think in Fox, Bannon and Tizzard we have three pretty good centre backs, but they're all young, and would all benefit from playing alongside someone with Kilday's experience.

I think even a draw on Saturday would settle things down slightly, just to break the run of defeats, but that might depend on how the game goes.

There's no denying the fact that we are on the crest of a slump at the moment. Still, I don't feel that there's any chance that 'The Iceman Cometh' clutching a fistfull of p45's.

Another couple of league fixtures and we will have reached the point that RV referred to when he said ' let's get the first round of fixtures out of the way and we'll see where we are ' (paraphrasing, but that was the jist of it).

The guy is still on a very steep learning curve and I reckon it's only fair to allow him the time to resolve the issues we currently face.

A win of any description on Saturday would go a long way to help but it would be even better if we could shore up the defence a bit.

Here's hoping!

Going by the wording of Beuker regarding Mckinstry, it seems like he’s intending to play him in the number 10 role which is pleasing. Mildly frustrating yet understandable that it sounds like he won’t be starting for a wee bit due to lack of fitness. Hopefully at the very least he’s on the bench given our current run of form

Certainly looks a very good signing, but a deal to the end of the season is kind of similar to a loan deal in terms of how it fits in with the longer term plan. Looks like  a very good addition to the team while others develop, unless we can make him a good offer in June.

Surprised Beuker could dictate all that given the amount of humble pie he was chomping on at the time

McKinstry’s been a free agent for a while now and expressed a wish to return to Scotland. Kind of shortened his negotiating hand. It’s enough time to prove himself. Perhaps the club are reflecting on their summer policy of 3 years for anyone, proven or not.

Still think Spong is a pretty safe bet; the only one who's making the 3-yr deal look foolhardy at the moment is sadly, Turner, as if McKinstry turns out to be semi-decent and with Savoury still in the mix, he could be third choice - which given the squad size is no mean feat

Spong is a 2 year deal

Can he play as a central defender? 😄
