scottsdad
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/may/02/thousands-of-hollywood-film-and-tv-writers-to-go-on-strike The WGA in America has gone on strike. Writers for TV shows are downing their pens and not writing. In the short term, live shows like Saturday Night Live might need to be binned as there is no comedy material. This can affect drama shows, too. Past strikes have led to shortened seasons of shows or bad scripts.
Mark Connolly
I remember the one in 2007. Loads of shows either stopped or were massively delayed. It's only 16 years, but so much has changed in how TV works and is consumed. Will be interesting to compare the effects this time round

How would anyone know the difference, amirite? Ha ha ha! Aye, this seems to happen fairly often. You can track the strike years by the TV series that have mysteriously short seasons. It can be annoying, but film/TV studios are absolute mendacious b*****ds who routinely force the creatives to sue them just to get paid, so I'm inclined to think it's probably necessary from time to time.
Bob in Denny
Apparently among the demands is a yearly meeting to discuss future going ons, sounds more like the studios are going to depend more on AI, the writers fear....

That's the dream; everything recycled for free from existing materials for the rest of time. Lot of Harvey Weinsteins getting very excited by the prospect of typing "Gone with the Wind, but with Brigitte Bardot's tits and more explosions" into a box and having an AI bot render their latest blockbuster in time for the summer.

I'd watch that but tweak it to replace Bridget Bardot's tits with Jayne Mansfield's. Last strike was when Heroes was out, was a great show up until the writers walkout then turned to shit and never recovered.

Aye, there was a series of House MD that had one of the main characters meet the love of their life and traumatically lose them all within the space of a few episodes, when they'd clearly planned it to build up over the course of a full season. IIRC, there was also a season of Sex and the City that had fewer episodes, but was greatly improved because it was shite.
scottsdad
Season 2 of Star Trek The Next Generation was battered by it. They ended up recycling scripts from Phase II and finished with "Shades of Gray" which was just wee clips of past episodes.

The whole "save the cheerleader, save the world" storyline was excellent but after the writers strike it absolutely fell to bits.
