The Pie and Bovril Dead Pool 2024

Scotland's oldest living woman Marion Dawson has died aged 111

Not many points for @Ned Nederlander but the 50 bonus points for a Solo Shot make it worthwhile to boost his lead at top of the league. Good deadpooling sir.

Does she qualify?

What is her celebrity status?

What's she famous for?

I think anyone whom lives to the age of 111 on a Scottish diet deserves celebrity status and I would say that the oldest person in the World or any UK country would qualify plus, while the above link is not a qualifying obit her name will be all over the Scottish papers tomorrow.

1. If there's a qualifying obituary published, yes. Otherwise no. The other  causes for disqualification (famous for being ill, famous for being someone's relative, famous for being a US college sports star, being under the age of 18) don't seem to apply.

2. Aquamarine

3. Being older than anyone else in Scotland (she had newspaper articles written about her when she was alive)

Everyone seems to have reined it now so don't think it will go on furlong.

Maybe somebody has taken offence? Bit of a nightmare if they have.

No qualifying obit for auld Marion - the Record covered her most recent birthdays so mibeez there'll be some mention of her before the end of the year

Some life though, 26 when WW2 broke out, 50 odd by the time man walked on the moon - she lived 50% longer than most of us will!

Week 30 update

One death this week, musician John Mayall: John Mayall obituary | Blues | The Guardian

Quote

The years of the mid-1960s, John Mayall said, “were a special period in British music history” – the foundation of all today’s rock.

“Our source was all the American black music that Americans weren’t listening to,” he said. “People mention Eric Clapton, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, the Animals, the Rolling Stones: all these people came out of a small time period – four years. We were all so dedicated to where this music came from and the injustice of the fact that the blues was not appreciated in America. We were damned if we were going to let it go on being unnoticed.”

Mayall, who has died aged 90, did more than most to get the blues noticed in the UK. He composed music, sang, and played several instruments, but above all he was a bandleader, notably with the Bluesbreakers. Ever alert to musicians who might realise his ideas while developing their own, he employed leading blues players across two generations, from Clapton and Peter Green to Walter Trout.

Mayall was one of the more prolific artists that I've ever covered here. He recorded loads of stuff, so picking out something to share here is more difficult than usual. Thankfully someone in the thread already covered that, so let's have a listen:

Free up your Sunday. It seems he recorded and performed well into his 80s, so good for him.

Mayall died at 90 so he's worth 35 Base Points for @sophia, with a Solo Shot taking that to 85 points.

================

This week also saw the death of Marian Dawson, Scotland's oldest woman and a Solo Shot for @Ned Nederlander. There are no qualifying obituaries as yet, so he's not getting any points for her so far. I'll keep an eye out. I'm sure he will too.

As soon as I see that an author has died I immediately assume that it must be a @Miguel Sanchez pick but in this instance it's @Florentine_Pogen who picks up the points 32+50 bonus points

Am I the only one who feels like there's more death announcements on Sunday afternoons than any other time. As if the Dead Pool contestants are hanging on to see who they've outlived in Miguel's weekly update.
