Guests in the Junior Cup

Recommended Posts

Went to the Glasgow Uni v Rob Roy game. A cracking game! Rob Roy hit the post 4 times and the underside of the bar once. Uni keeper made some cracking saves but Uni always looked like they could nick a goal on the break and did so in the last minute. Rob Roy will be raging with the chances they missed and it's come back to bite them in the end

Well, that was embarrassing. I actually made it six strikes against the woodwork (two late ones came close together) and three terrific saves from the Yooni keeper, but still can't grumble about the outcome. We deserved nothing. Serious questions to be asked.

The Yooni seem to have nae support but the lack of pies - or anything - was as disturbing as the result.

Was surprised to see we were drawn away to Glasgow University in Round 1. Are they 'guests' or have they joined what's left of the SJFA? Still, the old trophy is certainly looking upmarket - First Round, Friday night under lights, all-seated, digital QR code tickets...  it's a long way from auld men in bunnets, cold Bovril and dugs running onto the pitch.

Glasgow University fc, one of three Glasgow clubs that play home games 15 miles east of George Square. 10,000 all seater stadium with a couple of hundred in it. Public transport links with two train station a mile or more away in either direction and one bus an hour from Glasgow. Bizarre ticketing system for an almost empty stadium named after a potato distributor. It sure ain't an old Junior ground in Glasgow with a cheap bar and proper transport links. Could be worse, it could be Gartcairn.

Aye, we passed Gartcairn's gaff on the way. Odd set-up for GU at the Excelsior but at the end of the day they won.

Where was the game-lost track of it!

The uni have to play at Airdrie to remain licenced. Their real home would be at Garscube playing fields which are part of the science park on Maryhill Road.

Unlike Stirling and Edinburgh Unis they haven’t been able to build dressing rooms and other necessary facilities adjacent to their existing pitch so have to play at Airdrie to fulfil ground requirements.

A shame as the 1st XI pitch at Garscube would be as good as any surface in the WOSFL in terms of upkeep, dimensions and drainage.

Stirling University's setup at Gannochy is fairly similar to Garscube, well-kept playing fields and a sports centre. The first team in the LFL play at Forthbank and the seconds in the EoSFL play at Ochilview.

Some big scores in South Challenge Cup last week too and has been in Scottish Cup before plus upsets in all 3 tournaments too. Dundee North End didn't want to take it easy obviously as would often happen once you get to 8-12 goals..v obviously much lower standard of opponents.

25:0? Ffs, maybe there should be a mercy rule in football that if a team goes 12:0 up the game finishes?

We're u at the game I guess not and  do u know much about both teams I guess not yes it's a big score and maybe a freak score but find out what's happened before u post  cause u could do damage to the team they got beat is it nice no but it's happened but give the opposition credit for playing before u criticse them before knowing their issues

Ah! I stand corrected. The last time I was inside the Gannochy building was when the ‘Scottish Sport Campus’ was being mooted at Stirling and they had plans on display for an enclosed ground which the players would enter via a tunnel from the rear of that building. I suppose that was all shelved with the building of Oriam.

Cheers!

A freak result at Whitehills. I remember Renfrew going there as holders and only winning by a couple of goals. That’s the nature of ‘all-in’ cup competitions - you’ll have huge results from time to time just as you’ll have huge shocks. This season’s junior cup has already had both and we’ve just finished round 2.
