Three's a Crowd: the EOS Third Division 2024-25

With more varied spread of clubs, but less inconsistent level of strength, this division looks particularly hard to call as 11 clubs pursue promotion from the bottom rung. Stoneyburn and Lochgelly both had strong finishes to last season while Pumpherston and Fauldhouse were also in good shape. Hawick will be looking to recapture their early form of last campaign, while the relegated sides are more likely to mount immediate challenges to bounce back than previously.

Edinburgh Utd look to be in a difficult place.

last two games absolutely rag dolled by amateur teams.

leith ams 7-1 Edinburgh Utd

tollcross 8-3 Edinburgh utd

can’t see them bouncing back up unless something weird happens!

Why not?? In every single friendly we have played 2 completely different sides per half.

We played Bathgate Thistle and were 2-2 at HT, then played Whitehill Welfare and were 1-1 at HT, so clearly made multiple changes

We have 13/14 new players into the 1st team, so it will take a bit of time to gel. Never ever read into pre season

Hibs got beat off Kelty Hearts, yet Kelty Hearts were comprehensively beaten by Hearts B, so results are immaterial. Assessments of teams should be made after 6/7 competitive league fixtures as thats when teams are playing their strongest 11, and not making multiple changes to get minutes into players.

I have taken in a few pre season games in the third division and not many teams looked the same as how they finished the season.

Yesterdays results:

Edinburgh CFC 1-5 Edinburgh Utd.

Hawick 2-2 Pumpherston

Lochgelly 6-2 Fauldhouse

Newburgh 1-2 Linton hotspur

Ormiston 0-1 Stoneyburn.

EOS Cup

Livingston 2-1 Burntisland.

really good to see Linton picking up a victory yesterday as they hope to have a better season this year.
Stoneyburn picking up a victory and a clean sheet to kick start their season.
Hawick and Pumpherston both grab a point on the board in what I’m told was a good game.
Edinburgh utd bounced back after a couple of poor pre season results with a great 5-1 scoreline.
Livingston utd putting Burntisland out the cup will be huge for Livingston as Burntisland are second division team.

I took in the ormiston game yesterday and thought it was a very scrappy encounter but a couple of chances for both teams before the stoneyburn striker found himself free in the box with a good diving header to take all 3 points back to the village of stoneyburn.
not the prettiest of games but, old school football with loads of passion, fight and determination was on show.
I loved it.

Linton picked up just 4 wins in the division during their debut season. Already half way there after a great start to the season.

Helps when you play a relegated side and a team finishing below you last season -  could have four wins soon as the next two games are against EFC and HRA who they've beat previously!

Linton picking up back to back wins yesterday.
my friend who took the game in said it was a very scrappy game with two sides battling hard, only thing that separated the two teams was a goal of the season contender from Linton.

stoneyburn down 2-0 at half time but coming out a completely different animal in the second half to hammer 6! Yes 6! Past Newburgh.

Edinburgh utd v Hawick seemed to be the same as the Linton v Livingston game.
scrappy Affair with one a single goal separating the teams, Hawick last season were nice and quiet about their business and seems to be the same this season.

Pumpherston come flying out the traps against ormiston and going in at half time leading, only to then go on to lose that lead and lose the game to Ormiston.

fauldhouse grabbing their first 3 points of the season yesterday against Edinburgh cfc, some good football played in this game and a really good game for the neutral.

it’s good to see that this weekends game were hard fought and some good comebacks.

now for midweek fitbaw!!

Think need to give them a bit credit. They have recruited quite well through the summer

I think a relegated team would probably be one of the stronger teams in a lower league

Newburgh were always a likely candidate to struggle this season. Last few years finished 14/15, 13/17, and would have been 16/16 if it hadn't been for Edinburgh United's points deduction.

Good thing is there doesn't seem to much between the sides in the Third Division and even most of the Second Division at this point. Plenty of time to pull through.
