Champions League 2024/25

Recommended Posts

Couldn't see a thread for this, apologies if there is.

There are a handful of early round games tonight but it was the new format that tweaked my interest and had me searching P&B for some chat - basically it'll be a single league of 36 sides playing a single tie each against 8 other teams, the top 8 qualify for the knock-out stage automatically with the next 16 playing an additional play-off round to determine who'll meet them.

Details here  New format for Champions League post-2024: Everything you need to know | UEFA Champions League | UEFA.com

Seems interesting and a bit shit at the same time

(FWIW I'm hoping to catch a couple of games in the latter stages should any Italian clubs qualify)

The group stage will consist of 144 matches to eliminate 12 teams, with 24 going through. Such peril, so excitement. It used to be 96 matches to eliminate 16 teams, with 16 going through (though 8 would drop into the UEL).

The group stage draw is too complicated now so will be done by computer. The knock-out draws will be bracketed, a lot like the way rugby's European knock-out rounds are down, so there will be hardly any drama in those either.

The Europa League is following the same format.

The Conference League is doing similar but with 6 group stage matches against 6 different teams rather than 8. This is why it would be really good for Hearts to win their play-off with Plzen, it means two more matches.

You can now play more than one team from the same country in the group stage, but you can't play anyone else from your own country.

Two good things about the new format - there's no dropping down from one competition to the next - when you're out, you're out. And there's more variety in the teams played with 8 opponents instead of 3 in the UCL and UEL, and 6 opponents in the ECL.

What a start it’s been here at the Wankdorf Stadium.

Some game. Second leg in Turkey should be a belter I'd think.

In agreement with anyone who says the new format is w**k though. And it's probably going to force the hand of bigger teams to run even squads. The noises coming from players about too much football are incompatible with what FIFA and UEFA want to do so there's only really one solution.

Sitting at lunchtime at work today, some Celtic fans present, and the chat gets round to tonight's draw.

To which I replied, totally on the wind up I have to say, "is it all the teams that are in the draw or just the diddy teams?"

Delicious frothing at the mouth reactions for the next 5 minutes.

Did everyone else clap and cheer?

It got a bit of a giggle yeah.

Won't be long until the results in the league stage provide other points of hilarity as well.

This is f**king ridiculously complex to understand how the draw works. The fact they're giving us a 10 minute demo to break it down proves this.
