Not to be cynical, but nothing in that story suggests the U.S. administration had any idea what Israel was doing or planning. The biggest data point has been that Israel advised the U.S. just prior to the attack that something was about to happen, but not what. The last time the US went into Lebanon, the US Marines base got blown up. Ditto the French base.
