Savage Henry
Sri Lanka have just spent the last half hour bowling nothing but bouncers. England smashing it to the boundary. Very one-sided first hour.
Bearwithme
Sri Lanka got a few wickets with the bouncers. England 473-8 at lunch, Root 152 not out.
die hard doonhamer
England pass 500 for the first time since December 2012.
Fuctifano
This is going how I thought it probably would, Sri Lanka's attack in English conditions is totally popgun. Their batting is still decent though so fair chance this could be a draw.
Savage Henry
Certainly Sri Lanka are playing for the draw already.
die hard doonhamer
Plunkett goes. England 547-9 with Root on 181 (his highest test score).
booitsme7
Joe Root gets his 200 and England have Dec on 575-9.
Savage Henry
Guess Root is a middle order batsman then. I'd have him at three, but there's no way they'll shift him from 5 now.
AberdeenBud
Read Ali bats at 3 in County Cricket. Only one innings, but the Rob Key lookalike Ballance did not look like a first drop batsman.
Savage Henry
I don't trust hawk eye there. That was never going over.
Bearwithme
Well done to Chris Jordan who has taken a wicket in his first over in Test cricket. SL 58 for 1.
Savage Henry
Yup. A bad pitch like this one ruins cricket. I hope the groundsman gets his jotters for this. He won't, for the reasons you've given. I really wish England had gone with an out and out spinner though, Ali looks no better than Root with the ball.
jmothecat
I've spent most of the morning admiring the new England test shirts. Nice simple design with everyone's favourite supermarket sponsoring them, might have to get one of those. I missed the wicket.
dorlomin
15 wickets for 975 runs. Or an average of 65 per wicket on this turf. Dire for an early season wicket, should be juicy, green and seaming.
die hard doonhamer
Sri Lanka 453 all out, Matthews made 102. From reading the BBC text commentary this morning England employed some bizarre tactics early on. Cook really is a poor captain, but there is no one in that England side that I think would do a better job.
Savage Henry
Can't beat a "hit wicket" comedy out. The Sri Lankan number 11 got smacked by a Jordan bouncer and fell head first into his own wicket. The England players were, to be fair, more concerned with his well being than celebrating, but I laughed out loud. England have a lead of 120 odd after the first inning. A quick fire 250 might make this game interesting. Otherwise, bore draw. Edited June 15, 2014 by Savage Henry

Lex
Draw draw draw. Pitch too flat, borrrrring.
Savage Henry
Fair play to England. Only one team can win from here. An Andrew Strauss team would have batted out for a draw.
