Lex
Boom. There's the first one out, Lyth gone for 6. Good catch down low by Warner. Lyth really doesn't look up to it at this level.
Highlandmagyar
Surprised England chose to bat! Plenty of movement in that pitch!
jmothecat
England win the toss and bat, will be tricky early on. Can take or leave England when it comes to cricket, was wanting the Kiwis to beat them in the last series, but the Australian cricket team are up there with the likes of Chelsea in the amount of utter c***s that play for them (Warner, Watson, Haddin, Johnson off the top of my head)- although weirdly Clarke as captain comes across as decent enough. So hoping for an England win but can see this being 3-1 Australia. I doubt there are many neutrals supporting Australia. Ok start for England considering the conditions.
die hard doonhamer
Its on the ECB website as far as I know. Just thinking with this 1st test being played in Wales, it would be interesting to see if they would ever consider sending a test north of the Border, to Grange or New Williamfield or Mannofield. I think it could be handled at any of these grounds as they've all held ODI and Intercontinental Cup matches before. I can see England being rolled for 200 in the first innings here. I've never been to the grange, but went to the ODI at Mannofield last year and have played at New Williamfield and neither are anywhere near the standard required for test match cricket. It would be the equivalent of the SFA putting Scotland games on at Forfar. Also, the ECB is the cricket board for England and Wales, so it is logical to hold matches in Wales. Games in Scotland would be completely illogical.
AberdeenBud
Punter is pretty decent in the commentary box. Great coverage as usual from Sky. Very few sports broadcasts are on a par with their Test coverage. Not a bad start for England, surprised Ballance hasn't gone yet tbh and expected a bit more from Starc. booitsme7
England has lost 2 more wickets and are now 43-3.

Antiochas III
Shocking stat. Last 9 innings for Ian Bell has seen him make just 56 runs. That's a batting average of 6.222. How much longer?
DeeTillEhDeh
England's usual top order batting collapse. Root and Balance need to stay there or they are going to crash to a defeat in 3/4 days.
Lex
Predictable collapse from England's top order. Bell is becoming a bit of a joke figure these days, seems to have been in awful nick forever. If England don't drop him it's going to be a long summer for them.
AberdeenBud
jinxed it. Cook went about two seconds after I hit post.

Bobby Skidmarks
Strange decision from Cook to bat first. Anderson would have fancied bowling in these conditions. Again, England relying on Root to hold the innings together. If he can get into three figures with support from Ballance, Stokes and Buttler then the game can be salvaged.
Antiochas III
Bell needs to go. Bring in Bairstow or Morgan. Hell bring in Rashid to give another bowling threat but as long as Bell doesn't make the starting XI.
AberdeenBud
Strange decision from Cook to bat first. Anderson would have fancied bowling in these conditions. I'm not a fan of Cook as captain but I can see why he batted, the pitch itself looks pretty good. Good toss to lose, probably.
Antiochas III
Lunch. Root solid, although dropped second ball. Still give the morning session to Aus but as bad as it looked 40 mins ago

DeeTillEhDeh
Good comeback so far by Root and Balance - if they stay well beyond their 50s (even getting hundreds) then this match is wide open again.

Hell bring in Rashid to give another bowling threat but as long as Bell doesn't make the starting XI. I'd have Bairstow in there, even as just a batsman. Considering the form Bairstow has been in he's crying out to be picked. Bell needs to be dropped. I know KP didn't do himself many favours but you've got someone of his calibre eligible for England who has openly talked about wanting to play for England but instead he's off playing T20 in the West Indies. Considering the conditions I think England aren't too badly placed at the moment though. Agree with the consensus it was a surprising choice to bat first.
