The best players we have (Russell, Hogg, Gray etc) all made their debuts about 20-22 and were establish first choices by about 23. By 26-28 if your not starting for Scotland your only going to be a bit part player (project players excluded). Im not saying they are bad players, there good club players and good players to have as part of the squad, they are not though and are not going to be world class players and as we have a small group of players we need to identifying and managing properly any players that have that potential edit to add....While I was waflling on someone else seems to agree Scotland squad Forwards: Jamie Bhatti, Fraser Brown, Luke Crosbie, Rory Darge, Matt Fagerson, Zander Fagerson, Grant Gilchrist, Nick Haining, Rob Harley, Jamie Hodgson, Oli Kebble, Murray McCallum, Stuart McInally, Dylan Richardson, Jamie Ritchie, Pierre Schoeman, Marshall Sykes, George Turner. Backs: Mark Bennett, Jack Blain, Matt Currie, Jamie Dobie, Cole Forbes, Darcy Graham, George Horne, Damien Hoyland, Sam Johnson, Blair Kinghorn, James Lang, Rufus McLean, Ali Price, Charlie Savala, Kyle Steyn, Ross Thompson, Sione Tuipulotu. They are at their peak age for this World Cup cycle. Russell, Hogg etc got in the team so early because the cohorts in front of them were so bad. It will be much more difficult for this group of young players and having to really earn it should drive them on. That squad is just the Glasgow/Edinburgh select plus Richardson for the Tonga game. Richie Gray and Vellacot are surprise omissions. Jaco VDW obviously not rated by Townsend either. Schoeman Brown Fagerson Gilchrist ???? Crosbie Ritchie Fagerson Price Thompson Steyn Johnson Bennett Graham Kinghorn. Lock is a problem. Mark Connolly
Sad to see with all the talent available that Blair Kinghorn still seems to get himself in these squads. Delighted to see Mark Bennett back, even if he may not feature all that much in a full Test squad.

Updated now. 2nd row is the worry I wouldnt even start Gilchrist, never mind any of the others. Hopefully Cole starts before Kinghorn at fullback (infact anyone other than Kinghorn at 15 please) I've not seen anything of Savala too comment, but getting in ahead of Weir and VdValt there must be something to him

GAD
I actually think Gilchrist has been ok recently, certainly at the end of last season he was is decent form. I just think he's a bit soft sometimes. You get the feeling Cummings and Gray are a nightmare to play against, don't really get that with Gilchrist.
ajwffc
I don't think that is the full test squad but just a training squad

My biggest moan about Gilchrist is that the only time he is noticeable is when he is giving away penalties, which seemed to be quite often. Granted you need players to do the unglamours grunt work (and nothing worse when your a forward when its the glory hunters that hang out the rucks waiting for the ball that get the plaudits) that goes unnoticed, and tbf I never noticed he was playing vs Italy or France 2 hours ago, ajwffc said: I don't think that is the full test squad but just a training squad Its the test squad for the Tonga match as no English or French based players are available.

Detournement
Richardson playing at 6 for the Sharks this weekend. I think we need a hooker more than another backrow but I'm not sure you can be a part time international front rower.

Yeah, the saffers talking about him on Twitter were pretty clear he was a backrow who could cover at hooker rather than the other way round. Mind you, I think McInally and Brown were the same at one point. Also, I'm sure in SA they switch the numbers of the flankers, don't they? So 6 is the openside in a SA team.

The one good thing about Whitehouse is he is equally bad for both sides, which is an improvement on the normal refs that just give Leinster / Munster / Ulster everything. The seethe from the Ulster fans when he dared give Glasgow penalties in Belfast was refreshing Edited October 15, 2021 by honestly united
