Wow. This means that I wasn't the only one to vote for classic Doom this time.

I may celebrate this change in fortunes the same way that I celebrate everything: by playing classic Doom.

Edit: also means that five of my choices are now out. Anyone else had a more unpopular top ten so far?

My top three will all have multiple votes but these were all me only (I regret nothing):

4. Donkey Kong Country
5. Worms Armageddon
6. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
7. Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
8. Call of Duty: Warzone
9. Burnout 3: Takedown
10. NBA Jam

I've had three out, but I know for a fact my top choice will be a lonely ten pointer.

My top 2 will probably be up there, certainly one of them will because lots of people will have voted for it, and the other because the few people who did pick it (won't be more than 3 I imagine) will all have ranked it highly.

IN JOINT 69TH PLACE, WITH 9 POINTS FROM 2 VOTES

Doom cover art.jpg

Game: Doom
Platform: PC
Release date: 1993
Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFnOLFd_ByQ
Poll-maker questions: This is on sale on the PS store right now for £1.70 or something. Is it worth it?

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy cover art.jpg

Game: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC
Release date: 2017
Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl92suBQukI
Zero Punctuation review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEARfli4o20
Poll-maker backlog status: It's on there. I don't know when I'll get to them since there's three of them and they're hard but it's there. Hopefully I have a better time of it than any of the times I've tried the original PlayStation versions of 1 and 2.

It depends on how much you need the £1.70

I don't know about playing it on a console, but it's still great fun on PC, and you've access to almost thirty years of source ports, mods, and total conversions. Frankly, if I was locked up for life (who'd be surprised) and could only take one game, it'd be Doom.

I'm maybe just being picky, but can a remake of a trilogy be considered "a" game?

This is actually two votes condensed as one

It's the only case where this comes up and since it's three games on one disc and released as a standalone thing (you can't buy them individually), it's fine.

I think 4 or 5 of mine have been up, can't even remember my list fully tbf but I know Fortnite and Star Wars Battlefront 2 have came up however I am thoroughly convinced that my number 1 choice will win.

(I say this but I didnt submit my list in a top 10 order so it might not even be my first selection but it would be top 3 and is easily my favourite game and will deffo win)

IN JOINT 58TH, WITH 9 POINTS FROM 1 VOTE

LA-Noire-Box-Art.jpg

Game: L.A. Noire
Platform: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC
Release date: 2011
Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1VyskSNq2o
Zero Punctuation review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2Z7EGPSfDE
Poll-maker comments: I liked this. I still do, or at least like the thought of it. I'd like to play the PS4 version at some point to go through it all again.
Game's lasting cultural impact outside video games:

Cole Phelps doubt - Album on Imgur

Video Games - cole phelps - video game memes, Pokémon GO - Cheezburger

Chrono Trigger.jpg

Game: Chrono Trigger
Platform: SNES, PlayStation
Release date: 1995
Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEcwtSkRz2Q
Poll-maker comments: Another forum I post on did one of these polls years ago and this won by miles. I don't really know what it is, but the people who like it really like it.

Crash Bandicoot 2 Cortex Strikes Back Game Cover.jpg

Game: Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Platform: PlayStation
Release date: 1997
Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmnq7yedAzI
Poll-maker comments: I know it's a bit churlish to include this separately from the N.Sane trilogy but the three votes were all for these specific things. This is one of those games I have fond memories of despite never coming close to finishing it or getting the most out of it.

ACValhalla.jpg

Game: Assassin's Creed Valhalla
Platform: PlayStation 4;5, Xbox One; Series X/S, PC
Release date: 2020
Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FApX-M_DrDc
Zero Punctuation review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65qhONjnOpQ
User comments: "Vibrant world, AC finally have built a delightful RPG, raiding through England is something I never knew I needed."

Nier Automata cover art.jpg

Game: Nier: Automata
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Release date: 2017
Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MU0yMgu3bQ
Zero Punctuation review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKpa4bdt5ag
User comments: "Incredible dynamic soundtrack that's responsive to gameplay. Gameplay that melds multiple genres to suit unexpectedly deep storytelling. Multiple endings that makes it feel like 5 seasons of television spread across 30 hours of a game. Still surprised this exists and was so successful given it feels like a cult classic"
Poll-maker comments: I don't have a fucking clue what this, but I know that lots of boys and girls on the internet like dressing up as the main character. Draw from that what you will.

F1 career challenge cover.jpg

Game: F1 Career Challenge

Batman Arkham City Game Cover.jpg

Game: Batman: Arkham City
Platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC
Release date: 2011
Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efqVTukgYWY
Zero Punctuation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfFljXE47wA
User comments: "Arkham Asylum was a great game, and they somehow improved upon it with the sequel. Mark Hamill cements his place as the best Joker (f**k off, Jared Leto and Joaquin Phoenix), and Kevin Conroy is Batman. There's an immense amount of fun in skelping seven shades of shite out of goons and bad guys, then flicking a wee batarang at another goon as you exit stage left. There are drawbacks - it doesn't have the atmosphere of Asylum - but you forget about that when you rock up to the Mr Freeze boss fight."
Poll-maker backlog status: I'm going to have to start these sooner or later, the steelbook is making eyes at me and realising that this game is nearly ten years old is just making me feel horrible.

Heroes 2 cover.jpg

Game: Heroes of Might and Magic II

Delighted to see my No. 2 pick has not appeared there. At least 1 other P&B’er has it in their 10

Oh well scratch that as my No. 2 pick has now appeared as there was a difference between 9pts from a single or multiple votes 🤣

L.A Noire - Owned it when it first came out on 360, and couldn't finish it cos I scratched one of the discs. Bought it again on Switch a few years ago, and couldn't finish it cos frankly it was pish. The dreadful port didn't help mind.

Nier: Automata - another game I didn't finish or like. I really don't understand the hype behind it all, I didn't like anything about it.

Return of the Obra Dinn - brilliant game. Very unique in its delivery and art style. Was a breath of fresh air playing it.

Divinity: Original Sin II - This was my 2nd place vote. I can't believe not one other person has voted for this. 😪 I'm disappointed. For me it's the best RPG of all time. Bar none. 58th place is a tragedy.

If it had been a top 11 I'd probably have voted for Divinity: OS2. I'll probably write more about it tomorrow, but rest assured I think it's fucking magic

LA Noire came close to making my top ten. I understand the criticisms that people have with it, but there isn't much like it around and it scratched an itch that I didn't know I had. Reminded me of a modern version of the Sierra game Police Quest, only written by James Ellroy. All about the characters, crimes, and setting, and it all clicked with me. Shame nobody's tried to have another go and improve on the formula.

Incidentally, anyone playing on PC should definitely download the wee program that unlocks the frame rate cap, as it plays SO much better at 60fps than 30, and I'm by no means a frame rate whore. There's one puzzle that glitches out at 60fps for some reason, but you just drop down to 30fps when you hit it, then back again. Well worth your time.

Really annoyed with myself that I haven't bought Return of the Obra Dinn yet, as Papers, Please is a tremendous game.

The facial animations were either great (at the time) or hilarious, and that VR video has actually made me want to play a game in VR for the first time
