He played 9 times between December and March and then obviously had a cameo off the bench at the weekend there. Still potentially three play-off games and two Scotland friendlies before the tournament too.

He did but he was in and out and obviously not right. Hence why Norwich pulled him back out of 1st team training and sent him for more rehab.

As I said above he's unlikely to start the playoffs unless Norwich have injuries though if they are holding onto something there's a good chance he'll be sent on I suppose. Take the point re Scotland friendlies but the present thinking appears to be that Clarke will name his squad before them.

Hanley came on as a sub in Norwich City's last game.

Played 10 mins or so. Doesn't maybe change the outlook much though.

Apologies to @JS_FFC then, though you're right it doesn't change my outlook on it much. It was their previous game v Swansea he didn't get on in. I didn't realise he came on in the 82nd minute v Birmingham. I'll move him up a little from 50% at that then. Maybe 60%

Strange wording in this article - it says "boss" and not "manager".

Ahhh. Made the mistake of assuming it mean manager but the more you read into it then it's fairly clear it's someone higher up the food chain.

Yes, I've now seen the rumours and appreciate who the internet has decided it is.

Jack came through 45 minutes in a behind closed doors match already and is in contention to play for Rangers again this season. Now I accept the argument that even a fully fit Jack is a borderline pick whereas some of the others mentioned are key players, but I think Jack has a far better than 10% chance given the expanded squad and our other injury concerns in the midfield.

Hanley is back playing already although CB is one of our stronger positions in terms of depth. I’d give him a 65% chance of selection. Probably rising to 80% if he comes through the rest of the club season unscathed.

Patterson, Hickey and Armstrong are more binary choices imo. Either they are fit enough to make the squad and they will, or they aren’t and they won’t. With Hanley and Jack you can kind of make the argument that there are alternative options who are of similar talent levels that can go instead even if Hanley/Jack are looking good injury wise.

Ryan Jack - That's good news. I wasn't aware of it but have googled it now. @Butters Scotch would be proud of me!  That moves the goalposts on him. I don't think there is an argument that a fully fit Jack gets picked in a 26 man squad. Maybe in a 23 man one there was but in a 26 man one he'd go even if everyone was fit. I'm not sure he's important enough to take if he's not played though so whilst coming through 45 mins of a bounce game is good news, I think he's going to need to play 2 or 3 games for Rangers in the next fortnight to make it. Will he get picked for Rangers even if fit? I'll move him up from 10% chance to 25% based on this news though.

Hanley's back fit. He's not played a single minute though so I think you're being over-optimstic there. Norwich have only got two matches left unless they beat Leeds over two legs and even if they do they've only three matches left. The chances are that Hanley won't start any of them, though he may well be important off the bench. I'm sticking with my 50% for now but if he plays for Norwich in these next two games I'd move towards 100%.

I agree with you about Armstrong and Patterson being binary choices but it does seem likely Armstrong has far more chance than Paterson. Hickey has a lot more to prove in terms of fitness than the other two though and is running short of time given he's got about 2 weeks or so before the squad is named.

  5. 3 minutes ago, 2426255 said:

That's all fair enough, don't disagree with any of it. The point I was trying to make overall is that Hickey has in my opinion gone from being considered a doubt in the same vein as say Grant Hanley to something closer to Nathan Patterson.

I think Lewis Ferguson is only player that 100% will not be there. Everyone else is on a sliding scale of doubtfulness.

Absolutely. My back of a fag packet scale of chances of making the squad as it stands from snippets out there is:

    0% - Lewis Ferguson

    10% - Nathan Paterson & Ryan Jack

    25% - Aaron Hickey

    50% - Stuart Armstrong & Grant Hanley

I've probably factored Hickey back from about 40% since Frank;s comment.

  6. Everton have withdrawn their pointless appeal against a points deduction. They were never winning that for a second time, especially after Forest didn't despite having a better case.

Matters not a damn to them now anyway. Which of course just confirms it was spurious in the first place.

Is it just me that thinks they're chatting total shite about both these decisions? Ait-Nouri clatters Gvardiol while trying to block a shot without getting the ball, how is that not a foul? There would no questions about giving a foul anywhere else on the pitch for that.

And then for 3 of them to say that Solanke fouled Raya is mind-boggling, while also failing to mention the foul from Saliba slightly before this.

Have to say I thought the AitNouri one was a penalty. I'm not sure that the "normal actions of both players" excuse washes. Are we saying it's no longer a foul if you go to try to clear a ball in the penalty area and someone nips in front of you to put their leg where the ball previously was and you blooter it? That's a nonsense.

I'll be honest to say I've not really watched the Raya decision. The game was on live when I was in the room but I wasn't paying much attention and haven't see it again since.

The same panel to be fair voted 5-0 that Forest should have had a penalty for the 3rd Ashley Young incident at Everton but 3-2 against it for the handball and 5-0 against it for the first one.

Not many EPL bosses who would have even been in the UK 20 years ago

Yeah my son and I were discussing this last night. Given the ages and nationalities of the Premier League bosses as a group, there's a VERY limited pool of possibilities here. It seems the alleged offence took place in the 1990's and there are strong hints it was within the UK. Its also been confirmed the accusation relates to something in a previous (not football) job. That probably suggests said Premier League boss is in his late 40's at least, possibly more likely 50's and is probably British.

That doesn't leave a lot of candidates.... Two, three at a push.

I'm not sure there's such a thing as "officially ruled out". It's not like the SFA issue a list of people who won't be fit. He's had cruciate surgery which is at least 9 months on the sidelines normally. He's as officially ruled out as he ever will be before the squad is actually named.

Well it's certainly not good news and he didn't offer any hope there in comparison with say Russell Martin stressing whilst ruling Armstrong out for the rest of the domestic season that they would be doing all they could to get him fit for the Euros and he had a "good chance". However, it really is just him saying that Hickey not playing this season for Brentford is not positive news for Scotland. Which it obviously isn't as he's been out a long time. However, he was also reported to be running on grass a couple of weeks ago and Neil MacFarlane was a little more optimistic. It's not impossible that he may still make it but maybe playing three games in a fortnight may be optimistic. I suppose with the 26 man squad there's scope for possibly taking him if he may be available for the last group game / any knock out game.

I'd put Hickey in the same category as Patterson.

Not technically ruled out, but unlikely. No-one has been officially ruled. Based on their club manager's comments and the amateur doctors amongst us. None of Armstrong, Hickey and Patterson will play games for their clubs for the rest of the season, but they won't all necessarily miss out.

I read that the squad is expected to be named 21-May. Not sure if that's true - we've discussed all that previously. The article which I believe @JS_FFC referred to in the Who's on the plane thread is from 18-Apr.

    https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/13117105/euro-2024-uefa-considering-squad-announcement-delay-amid-england-and-scotland-fixture-congestion

It is slightly different with Armstrong though (and indeed Paterson) compared to Hickey (and also Hanley) in that he's played competitive football within the last month. He's not been out of the game for 6 months plus. If Armstrong is physically fit he's likely to remain fairly sharp. Hickey's not kicked a ball for more than 6 months. Leaving aside a handful of sub-optimal performances in Feb / March, Hanley's not really played for over a year. Though he at least is now physically fit and training with his team. It would be helpful if he gets 2 or 3 games for Norwich in the next fortnight but I can't imagine they'll change their team up for the playoffs at this stage unless forced.

If these dates are accurate, and there is some doubt over the likes of Armstrong who is surely the closest to making it of the group, then he may include them anyway, or push that date back a bit to save naming someone in a 27/28 man squad and then disappointing them if Armstrong / Hickey declare fit. Surely better to wait till the last minute, although I appreciate he's going to need to name the travel party for Gibraltar at least a week before.

01/06/24 - Jimmy Thelin (Aberdeen) * Future appointment announced 16/04/24. Peter Leven remains in charge until then

Vacant - Ross County - Derek Adams resigned 07/02/24, Don Cowie in Interim Charge

Vacant - Annan Athletic - Peter Murphy joined Queen of the South 09/05/24. No interim manager announced as season over.

    *Note
Steven Naismith was appointed caretaker manager of Hearts on 9th April 2023. After a successfully spell he was given the job permanently on 7th June 2023. However, as he does not have a Pro Licence and Hearts qualified for Europe they were required to 'officially' name assistant Frankie McAvoy as manager on the same date. Naismith instead took on the title 'Technical Director'. Following Hearts elimination from European competition, Naismith was officially re-confirmed as Manager on 6th September 2023 with McAvoy reverting to assistant. As nobody surely seriously believes McAvoy was ever actually in charge, I've listed Naismith as continuous from 9th April and ignored McAvoy's official 3 month spell as manager.

If the technical most recent reappointment date of 6th September is instead used for Naismith then he drops four places further down the list, in between Brendan Rodgers and Nick Montgomery.

So, updated for appointment of Peter Murphy at Queen of the South which in turn means Annan Athletic are managerless. Murphy had been Scottish football's 3rd longest serving manager with just under 7 years at Annan Athletic. It's been a long apprenticeship to reach full time football for him. Remarkably Ian Murray at Raith Rovers moves into the top 10 with just under two years in post! Obviously more changes are likely in the next few weeks. Annan will appoint someone, Ross County will need to clarify the position once their season ends, Jimmy Thelin will join Aberdeen properly. Good chance Mick Kennedy at EK will need entered in the list too though personally I'd prefer to keep Stranraer in the SPFL.

The 2-1 Norway win was clearly a tactical masterclass by Steve Clarke.

In seriousness, the plan was presumably to keep things tight and see what was necessary in the final half-hour, especially as we were up against the greatest striker in the entire world ever. I doubt Clarke ever considered it would work out so perfectly, though - none of us were expecting a win even before the game, surely.

Despite having a couple of world-class players, Norway are still a bit mediocre though; kinda similar to us through most of the wilderness years. People seemed to think they'd kick on after blitzing Armenia a few years ago, but it hasn't happened yet.

Expecting? No, not expecting. But I certainly thought we could win and had a 50/50 shot at it going in. I'd have happily taken a draw. In the event though we were very much 2nd best without letting them have too many scoring chances. It ended up classic smash and grab.

    Irrelevant bit in the middle

I'm not saying to click on some random google link, you type in the search bar of the information you need to find out and then you click on a relevant source that you'd trust the most.

So trolling then? Glad we cleared that up. You answered the question yourself ironically in the last sentence. We got bloody lucky though, in yanking the unlikeliest looking win out of nowhere.

1-1 would have felt like a smash and grab.

Yeah, this is all true.  We offered pretty much nothing positive for 88 minutes.

For what it's worth though, I don't think Norway battered us either. They had more of the ball and were the better side. They weren't bombarding us though. They scored a soft penalty (but should have had a far more stonewall one earlier in the game), missed a good headed chance and had a shot from outside the box narrowly deflected round the post by Cooper. I don't recall much else but it was a year ago and I've maybe forgotten something. I recall thinking it was a disappointing performance from us more than that we were especially lucky to only be one down.

Aye if you're reading someone on a social media platform maybe.

There's various websites out there where you can find the information you need from journalists who are paid well to find this information out. Where do you think these so called experts on here find out info?

Are you for real or is this just some sort of trolling effort? I've a lot of experience dealing with Scottish football journalists. What I know about Scottish football and how it works is much more than the majority of them. I've had journalists contact me for information about how things work and what rules are on a reasonably regular basis. The majority of them are clueless outside of the Old Firm and maybe Hibs and Hearts, and even those who are genuinely interested in the rest of the game are unlikely to have enough time or interest to pore over such details, they just ask someone who does. Like I did.

I well remember a couple of seasons after the playoffs first came in sitting next to one of Scotland's allegedly more "respected" journalists who wasn't even aware there WERE playoffs in the lower leagues at that point. He knew where the bar was though, and wandered into the match 20 minutes late having been in it and asked if he'd missed anything important. I made a point of looking for his article on the game in question on the Monday. Four or five flowery paragraphs which had one single sentence on the actual match action he was being paid to report on.

Genuine question, how much do you think football reporters in Scotland are paid?

Also, when journalists report on whatever your area of expertise is, like your profession, how accurate are they?

Generally, with a few notable exceptions, journalists are rarely nerds, and this kind of information is firmly nerd territory. They have lots of contacts and are very social people but they don't like getting into boring details. The standard of reporting on things like coefficients, rule changes, finances etc is dreadful. That was brought into sharp focus when Rangers collapsed and bloggers were the only source of solid information while journalists were writing absolute pish. Now I get most of my football media news from SPFL Mediawatch and finance news from Kieran Maguire, both on Twitter.

Beyond football the lack of quality and reliability in the news media is a huge societal problem but that's a discussion for elsewhere.

    This. 100% this.

Yeah this, I meant to say that, otherwise likewise given the expanded squad I wouldn't have put it past him to name four. It would be utterly pointless though. As you say injured goalkeepers can be replaced.

Because (regardless of game time) Gordon is a better goalie than Kelly. Its that simple.

If Angus Gunn and Zander Clark got injured at the tournament, are you genuinely saying you would trust Kelly in goals over Gordon? If you would then I suspect you would be in the minority.

Assuming the goalies are Gunn, Clark and Gordon, I actually think Gordon would get the nod over Clark too if anything happened to Gunn at the tournament.

I've consistently posted, including in the post you quoted but you edited that bit out, that I'd have Gordon ahead of Kelly every time. If he was playing I"d have him number one.

He's not though and Clarke dropped a very broad hint back in March that he needed to be. Two games for Hearts since and Clarke himself passed up the opportunity to give him game time v Northern Ireland when he easily could have.

Kelly's had a poor season but he and Motherwell have certainly at the same time improved their form in the last couple of months.

I dont want it to be the case but I think Kelly goes if its picked this week.

I think they've taken over all the Viaplay stuff domestically, so they'll still have Scotland internationals (and all UEFA internationals not involving England, in fact) plus the two domestic cup competitions. They sometimes show qualifiers for the European competitions involving British clubs, but BBC Scotland have been picking up more of these recently. They also currently have the rights to La Liga but no idea if that will expire.

Thanks. Couldn't personally care less about La Liga but my son may occasionally watch it I suppose. Makes no odds to me in terms of whether to renew. Having Scotland will do it though. I wasn't sure if the League Cup sponsorship had expired and with it the tv deal? Doesn't really matter though. I'll renew if they've got the internationals anyway.
