Also, what is the deal with Alex Dunbar these days? Seems to be frozen out at club and now international level. He's got a few issues,  but I still think he's a better player than Dean and Harris. In fact, looking at that squad, centre now looks an area of real weakness.

He came off injured in one of the Edinburgh games, but dont think I ever saw anything to say what he had done

Unfortunately he's level with the ball there.

    Doyle.

Really like Warburton as a pundit tbf. Usually very honest and balanced. He'll never get anywhere being like that!

hes been as bad as Lacey though :)

This is the Glasgow line up as well as the Edinburgh oneIMG_20190111_132334.thumb.jpg.7c1f0f88a20c46636bf98f9e8f095b79.jpgIMG_20190111_132409.thumb.jpg.f0b511d7697e690dff608074280b02fe.jpg

What's with all the Glasgow players having the same hair?

I think its Rob Harley's hair (it doesn't look out of place on him anyway), its his 200th game for Glasgow

  4. Wasn't convinced to start with that they could continue without Ragnar, but this 2nd half of the season has been pretty good so far.

Bjorn's mannerism's are now more and more morphing into Ragnar's (maybe as a consequence of Rollo's news) and Ivar is still a brilliant character, but its a bit disjointed as a dont see where Flokkie in Iceland fits in with everyone else

    Spoiler

And Lagertha better turn up again soon, as she is still one of the highlights of the show!!

  5. I can see both sides, on the one hand I would assume the majority of fans would have bit your hand off over the summer if you had offered them 2nd place in the league in the first week of Jan, 3 points back on first with a game in had. In fact I would bet a lot of Ayr fans would have settled for finishing 8th come May at the start of the season so where we are now is way above expectations. There will be many fans who have never see an Ayr team challenge at the top of the Championship, the same as there are a number who were bought up with us playing in the top flight, so you can understand a number of fans thinking that now is not really the time to criticise.

However the last few weeks the performances have dropped, be it fatigue, other teams have sat back and defended, where we play better as a counter attacking team or maybe just being full time they have had a chance to study how we play and plan to counter it - also with a small squad we dont really have options to do anything different to suprise teams. For me what has been missing the last few weeks (since Dundee Utd) is the pace of the game. To be fair its much easier to pay a fast paced game when the game is open rather than  when you are faced with a full team behind the ball it can grind to halt at times. But we are not seeing enough of the little flicks, the quick 1,2's etc that can open teams up, maybe we are missing Forrest more than anyone else. Im sure McCall as much as anyone will know the problems and hopefully will be looking to rectify them.

I think everyone will have been dissapointed with the last few weeks given how the season had gone so far, but to be fair this has been one of the better ones in my lifetime, and probably the best team since the Hurst, Teale, Walker etc one - if you haven't enjoyed it bar the odd blip then I dont know what you would enjoy!

  6. For me the 2 sides are fairly even, obviously Glasgow stronger in the backs with Edinburgh having the better forwards.

For me though the Glasgow bench is much stronger than Edinburgh's which may be the difference. If Glasgow are in contention early 2nd half, bring on the likes of Jones and Matawalu will swing the game

  7. Im sure Rennie said in an interview a few weeks back that he was looking at Fagerson, Horne and Hastings as his 8 / 9 /10 combination and although good now are only going to get better and will be the spine of the team for seasons to come.

Apart from Seymour (who is hardly old) the majority of players resigning are all what you could class as youngsters and a few more season playing together will be a boost for the squad. We dont have the money to compete with England or France, so we need to focus on bringing youngsters through, keeping them until mid 20's then letting them make there money with big moves and hoping we get them back for a few years at the end of their careers.

Incidentally, another indication is that all the continental tournaments - except the Asian Cup (and even it occasionally) - are played in June/July.

Have they moved the African cup from being in Jan / Feb then?

Amiable but not fantastic Scott Johnson?  I'll say this.  He's much better in his current job than he was in his previous one.

I'd (quite happily) forgotten he even existed

It looks like Guinness will be the new Six Nations sponsors signing a 6 year deal. So that will be the Irish getting even more help from the refs for the next six years

Its something like £3m a year less as well

  11. So basically the champions on the smaller countries (11th down) and the 2nd & 3rd teams from 5th down to 15th enter the Champions league qualifiers, if they get knocked out of that, they go into the Europa League either group stage or qualifiers depending on the round they are knocked out, or if its first round they go into the Europa Vase thing. And some of the teams could lose again in Europa laegue and end up in the group stage of the Vase!

  12. Pretty sure I read that Disney have got the rights to all the Marvel content which is why they are being pulled from Netflix once they have been aired.

Once the new chanel is up and running should expect to see the shows re-appear there, or new ones to start.

Wonder what will happen to the likes of Gifted, Runaways and Cloak and Dagger which were not on Netflix and more stand alone

Unfortunately coincidental surely as Frank's family were topped off on the carousel in the comics, although I'm sure I've read one where they were gunned down while on a picnic in a park!!!

Im sure it was actually in Daredevil where he said his family were killed during a picnic

You've got a guy at lock who made his debut a little over three weeks ago, and a back row with a guy who sat out the past year, and without Ritchie, who got a lot of game time this autumn, Bradbury, the delayed Blade Thomson and the coming Fagerson. I think you're right in that the first three are broadly settled (though Strauss did himself no favours on Saturday and I'm sure Thomson will get his chance), but I'm not sure the blend is actually settled. It was working in the spring though, so maybe I'm worrying too much.

I'm not sure Dunbar is first pick at 12, Townsend seems to prefer Peter Horne. Horne's got great skills, but in a back line short of physicality he seems to take a beating. By the time February comes around would we rule out the on-form choices at 12 being Bennett, Taylor, Scott and Harris?

In any case, the bigger uncertainty across the back is, how do we actually attack? Before this autumn we were all about building a few phases, drawing in defenders, getting quick ruck ball and then spinning it wide to guys running good lines. How many times did we do that against Wales, South Africa or Argentina? Our ruck was poor, we couldn't take care of our own ball and we got slowed down. Laidlaw has been back to the kind of play that saw him behind Ali Price in the pecking order for a while - a couple of beats too slow at the base of every ruck. By mixing up forwards and backs in the attack line we regularly had isolated players getting tackled and turned over. Everyone else is using pods of three at the ruck - one down, one to hit their first guy and one to get over the ball. I'm not saying we need to do the same, but we need to do something. All SA and Argentina had to do against us was take care of the basics and wait for us to cough up. We were going wide too quickly because we were getting hurt up front and too often it was too slow, static and obvious, leading to poor kicks.

The other problem is who comes off the bench at 9 and 10. Price looks to have been passed by George Horne, but he didn't show anything in the past few weeks. And Hastings... that didn't go well. He's going to have to learn fast.

I think the refereeing of the ruck is really harming us. Opponents get to go right over the ball, not support their weight, put hands on the ground and all they have to do is wait for the shout of "away red/ hands off green/ no blue!" before pulling away. By then the damage is done, they've added over a second to the ruck and that's all it takes. Nigel Owens showed how referees think on this in the Calcutta Cup match last season, when he didn't call advantage against England, but pulled them back for the penalty only after they'd intercepted and were about to score a try from the halfway line. You could hear him explain "the damage was done." Well, the damage is done at nearly every bloody ruck!

We're lucky to have two hookers that basically do the same job at the same level, they don't often last a full match in international rugby any more. Same at tight head, where we missed Zander.

Was there progress this autumn compared to last autumn? England, Wales and Ireland won 5 matches between them against the southern hemisphere's big three, and England were a whisker from beating NZ. I just feel that we've stalled a bit, all the old problems are there and now we have some new ones.

On Skinner, I think he is better than either Gilchrist or Toolis, not by much, but is a better option.

Barclay may have been out for 6 months, but his experience at the breakdown is invaluable, and I would have him straight back in unless he is completely off the pace on his return. Given Watson, Barclay and Wilson were the backrow pretty much all the last 6 nations where we did pretty well I would be happy to stick with that. Thompson may add something to the mix, Bradbury, Hardie, Denton, Ashe, Fagerson, Strauss, Graham and Ritchie will all be in their leading up to the world cup and all add something different.

As you point out the ruck was really poor, and Laidlaw doesn't help as he takes an age to get the ball out. Both Price and Horne are quicker players which would help out, but Laidlaw is better at managing games. Price lost his way abit last year, and I think Horne is the better player between those 2. I will come down to how we want to play, and do we have enough other leaders on the pitch on who starts. I would start Horne v Italy as we could really blow them away and lay down a marker for hte 6 nations.

Dunbar has missed a lot of rugby the last year, (the whole of the 6 nations last year), but i still think he is first choice at 12 over Horne, as he is solid defensively, and can punch holes, which is something we lack given the forwards we have. Horne is ideal for the bench as he can cover 10, 12 & 13, and if you also have Kinghorn who can cover wing and full back.

Having Taylor, Bennett and Scott back fit will give a bit of a headache going forward, with Grigg and Johnson looking to get in the squad also.

For me we probably didn't make the most of the AI's, but we are still looking at the best squad we have ever had. Im more used to asking why is someone in the squad, now you are wondering why players are missing out. Come the WC you will be able to put together a team of players who miss out on going to Japan, that would have hammered the best team we could muster in previous years which is a testament to how far we have come in the last 5 years.

    Watch https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0bssg0q/rugby-union-201819-12-scotland-v-argentina

39:32 Sanchez misses from straight in front of the posts, 30m out. Peter Wright says "You'd put your mortgage on Sanchez kicking that. Argentina, a nation of soccer players, natural kickers, there's no rationale as to why he would miss that kick."

52:27 Boffelli misses from 45m, fairly straight. No gimme, but most kicks from there go over in international rugby.

1:37:59 Sanchez misses from 45m, almost straight, again no gimme, but most of those go over, especially from him.

2:00:59 Sanchez misses from 35m, straight. This is bread-and-butter territory in professional rugby.

At least two of those kicks absolutely should have gone over. Argentina lost that match more than Scotland won it, so I can't be happy. The performance, especially in the first half, was easily the worst at home in 3.5 years. This is the last end-year international before the World Cup and we're the least settled of any of rugby's big 8 except for France.

It is luck. It's one of the few things in sport that really does come down to pure luck. Once you've given the penalty away in a kickable location, you're relying on luck for it not to go over. We got lucky that a good kicker had a bad day - otherwise, we lose that game. One win from four in the autumn would have been a pretty disappointing return.

I dont think we are that unsettled, I think a first 15 picks itself, and everyone knows how we want to play. What Toonie has been doing during the autumn internationals is giving the back ups plenty of game time and trying new formations. Ritchie, Skinner and Hastings have come in a cemented a place in the squad, Strauss is back in the fold. I thought Alex Allan put in a decent shift when called on up front, after some good performances for Glasgow.

I would say know our best team is

    Dell

    Brown / McInally

    Nell

    Gray

    Skinner

    Watson

    Barclay

    Strauss / Wilson

    Laidlaw / Horne

    Russell

    Seymour

    Dunbar

    Jones

    Maitland

    Hogg

Toss up at hooker, scrum half depends on opposition and no. 8 I still dont think is nailed down, plus we have plenty on the bench.
