  1. After a fair period of time , I thought I would go back and watch this because when I first saw it , it was pushed as a partner piece to Band Of Brothers and when compared to BoB it didn't come close as a series or story.

After rewatching it from a distance , I think it lacks a solid storyline and suffers from possibly being based on two memoirs and the John Basilone story.

The characters and their actors just don't generate enough interest or empathy. The combat sequences are relentless and technically excellent , but , there just wasn't enough heart in it. It was only the last half hour of the last episode that I felt a connection with any of them.

    6/10

Apologies if a thread exists , I couldn't find it.

  2. Finished this tonight and thought it was brilliant.

The way they could click from messing around to the professional super group was amazing.

As others have said watching them birth what are still some of the most easily recognised songs on the planet from a standing start is like being allowed to watch history being made.

It's difficult to imagine their recording history as a group only lasting 6-7 years considering the legacy and memorable songs.

ETA: What a cool guy Billy Preston was , added another dimension and allowed the others to concentrate non their main role.

If you only watch one 9/11 memorial programme this September, make it Turning Point : 9/11 and the War on Terror. 6 one hour episodes that go through the actual events and the resulting war in Afghanistan.  It culminates in the departure from Kabul.   Gives a voice to all sides, including the Taliban and Al Qaeda guys trying to justify 9/11, and the neocons, and the more reasoned of the conspiracy theorist cooks.

It’s a brilliant, and massive,  piece of work.

I don't know if you've read the book , but , it's very reminiscent of The Looming Tower : Al-Qaeda's Road To 9/11 by Lawrence Wright.

Saw they interviewed Ali Soufan , who is one of the main characters in the TV series of The Looming Tower. Very good documentary all round.

My Mrs got me the 20% Blue Light discount from Goldsmiths for this...at least that's my excuse.

Perfect fit, that's a really good case size for your wrist, I'm personally not a massive fan of chrono dials but that's not too cluttered so looks good.

I think the strap is one of the fitted ones , turns straight down after the lugs.

Today I learned that Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame did a bunch of X-Files episodes as well. I barely remember the first episode he apparently wrote (Soft Light) despite watching it maybe a fortnight ago.

Vince Gilligan also has a cameo in Community as a VCR video game actor in season 5.

  6. Always recommend Ken Burns Civil War and Vietnam war docs , although this other stuff is very good too.

I loved The Battered b*****ds Of Baseball , about Kurt Russell's dad taking over a minor league baseball team and held open trials for it...think Major League but true , really good I thought.

The Two Escobar's is also good and an older one Hearts and Minds about the Vietnam war.

Last book I read was Shuggie Bain. A very cheery read.

I started Dracula by Bram Stoker last night. That is a book I have never read, despite it's reputation as a classic of it's genre.

Found it a bit of a task because it was ( obviously) written in the dialect of the day.

  8. The Crusades : The War For The Holy Land by Thomas Asbridge.

Caught my eye after watching Knightfall on Netflix and wanted to understand a bit more about the subject.

A relatively easy read , a well told story starting with the first crusade and how it started a Latin Near East Kingdom that lasts for 200 years called Outremer .

A lot of recognisable names throughout the book , Saladin , Richard the Lionheart , King Louis IX  and a host of Popes.

Didn’t you say a few days ago « that’s it, no more new watches for a while? »

    Nice-looking piece, all the same.
