Just reading we're not offering that Joe Wright lad a deal - quite surprised at that as I think he showed up quite well in his trial.
This is a guy we offered a contract last year before withdrawing it when he got injured. I suspect we were mostly having a look out of courtesy tbh.
He also seems to have been playing Halkett's position in the friendlies, while we're more after someone to fill the Souttar role on the right of the three. Probably someone with a better pedigree or more promise.
It'll have boosted his profile a bit and shown he's fit enough to get back playing games. An English League One team will probably snap him up now.

I'm noting it quoted in Edinburgh papers that Hearts didn't include a %age sell on clause in their transfer contract for Hickey. That seems a bit foolish in light of the £18 million reported fee Bologna received.
Yeah, it's reported as a 6 figure fee. One of many clownshoe moves by the club at that time, unfortunately.

They've not got a good record when it comes to legal proceedings when we're involved so I'll assume they're shitting it now.
An award in our favour would have a big knock on towards any Shankland bid. And maybe even bolster ours if we're considering moving for him.
That in itself would he fucking glorious.
GMS has zero monetary value, probably costs us a decent wage and isn't very good. If we were somehow able to punt him and avoid the hassle of a tribunal it'd be a win, so "shitting it" seems a bit of a reach.
Any fee for Neilson is covered by the Hickey money banked today, not to mention the millions of guaranteed extra revenue from Europe and additional season ticket sales.

Not unless Hearts fork out over £500,000
Maybe, but nobody is paying that for him just now unless they're mental.

A perfectly cromulent word at that.

The tramp said he wanted “two no 10’s” so not necessarily.
Neilson's been quoted as wanting a fast no. 10 who can also play up front. Doesn't really seem like Ronan's game.
We've also spent 6 figures on this Grant guy. I'd be surprised if we did the same again for an ostensibly similar player.

Over 15,500 and sold out for Hearts. Up ~2,000 on last season I think.

If we're going over this again, the "Cochrane should have been sent off in the semi" straw-clutching relies on the idea he'd still commit the same obviously bookable foul even if he was already on a booking, which is a bit of a leap.

It’s an eminently sensible move. He knows who he’s signing for, we know what we’re getting
of course it’s hard to get excited about being “sensible”
But we had a long run of speculative punts at the tail end of the 2nd Levein era and that wasn’t great
Not sure if you're classing anyone other than someone who's played for us as a speculative punt but, if you are, the current recruitment set-up seems to have a much better record on that score than Levein/Murray.
My concern with the safe approach is that teams that seek to stand still often fall behind. We may need to improve just to finish 3rd again and, in the 3-4-3, the attacking output of the wing-backs was an area for improvement for me. I wouldn't have been averse to a calculated risk on a more attacking option in that position, in the knowledge that we could fall back on Halliday or Kingsley if needed.
Anyway, it's a fair enough move and there are arguably more pressing areas to improve, so I'm fine with it ultimately.

Kind of ambivalent about Cochrane.
One one hand, there's a reason Championship teams were after him: he's a solid, consistent defender and he's recently turned 22 so there's plenty of opportunity for him to improve. On the other hand, I wonder if he's the type of player who just doesn't have a high ceiling in terms of potential ability and if we might have gone for someone with more pace and attacking ability, especially as we've got plenty of cover at LCB now.
On balance, it's probably a sensible move given we know he can do the job in a few positions. I also wonder if he'll be at wing-back less often this season with Rowles arriving and "freeing" Kingsley to play there.

It appears those two blue dots are the only season tickets we have left. Massive club.

I think it's fair to say we will not be selling our only striker to Aberdeen (or anyone else) anytime soon.
That said, I expect us to phase Boyce out next season. He's 31, he's in his last year, he only got 6 from open play in the league last season and he had about as many poor games as good from January.
If we got Simms, Shankland and had another lined up then getting a bit of cash for him might be tempting. We're well off that scenario at the moment, though, and trying to make too many unnecessary changes to the squad usually doesn't go well for us.

Apparently Hearts were interested but other targets were higher up the priority list. Looks like a very decent signing to me.

I see Hearts are being linked with a £500k move for Shankland. I don’t pay much attention to other teams’ transfers, do Hearts usually pay that sort of money for players?
I don't think we've paid that sort of fee since the Romanov days. Then again, we've probably never been in a healthier financial state with the 3rd place finish, cup final and guaranteed group stage cash, as well as a possible windfall from Hickey moving.
Anyway, the reports are that it's a lower fee which might eventually get close to £500k with performance-based add-ons. I'd guess it's probably more like £250-300k at most up front.

I seen on Twitter that only ourselves and United haven't made a signing yet. I wasn't expecting a revolving door anytime soon but even to be linked with someone would be a start.

I also have a couple of wee snippets that we are interested in shopping for another Aussie. Also a defender.
On top of that we are quite hungry, but could only manage half an Indian if we decided to go down that route.
Last one I heard a rumour of our interest in may buck the trend, but won’t be free, man.

Returning to this a week later to revise my guess for #3 to a defender who most recently played in Poland.
Interesting to see Barry Anderson reporting that we've moved on to looking at alternative targets because Wolves' demands for Connor Ronan are too high. The last time we had a similar report was for Alan Forrest a few weeks ago.

Plenty of the Clarke In-ers will change their mind when they realise we only scored "two headers" against Armenia.I'm sceptical of Clarke, but the thick football fan's need to recategorise every single good result and performance as lucky or not that impressive is irritating.
A "battling defensive draw" in which we created a few chances of our own against a much better team on their own patch is somehow a bad thing. Israel were the better team at Hampden despite not getting out of their own half for 45 minutes and benefitting from several missed chances, including a penalty. Trying to rip the shirt off someone's back with two hands is somehow a "questionable penalty" and our keeper made a couple of saves, but the several chances we created of our own in that game don't warrant a mention.
He's a fanny.

4 is hardly the “Norm”.
How many competitive Hampden games have we played against better sides since he came in?
Scotland 1-2 Russia - capitulation after a good first 10 minutes
Scotland 0-4 Belgium - capitulation
Scotland 1-0 Czech Republic - we got battered in the second half
Scotland 0-2 Czech Republic - capitulation
Scotland 1-3 Croatia - capitulation
Scotland 2-0 Denmark - very good performance and result
Scotland 1-3 Ukraine - capitulation
Comfortably defeated in 5 out of 7 there and in all 3 of the biggest games. I'm happy with my original wording.

A complete list of competitive Hampden defeats by more than one goal since the turn of the century:
0-2 v Belgium in 2013 (Strachan)
0-4 v Belgium in 2019 (Clarke)
0-2 v Czech Republic in 2021 (Clarke)
1-3 v Croatia in 2021 (Clarke)
1-3 v Ukraine in 2022 (Clarke)
Pathetic capitulations at home against anyone half-decent has become the norm under Clarke, something not even Vogts, Burley and Levein managed. The very good performance and result against a weakened Denmark was the exception.
Aside from that, the positives pretty much amount to well-timed away results in Serbia, England and Austria. Away games in which we are unfancied are Clarke's forté. In these games, we've tended to do well enough to get a good draw or sneak a win. In just about every other situation — home games against anyone half-decent, away games against pretty much anyone — we've toiled to put a performance together.
Tactically, he seems to have one idea that's completely reliant on one injury-prone player. When that player isn't available, he persists with the idea despite the fact it hasn't produced in a single good performance. When it's not working, he never reacts until it's far too late.
I really thought we'd turned the corner after the run of games last autumn, but here we are seeing the same mistakes and getting the same clueless performances.
Time up for me, and we have to broaden our horizons beyond out of work Scottish managers when we're looking for a replacement.

Have we played well even once without Tierney in the back three?
Strange that having three absolute huddies at the back, no creative players and no goal threat is resulting in a shite display.

This is (almost) up there with the diets signing Malaury Martin on a 3.5 year deal.
Signing a player on a long-term deal and then finding out they're shite is one thing. Signing a player on loan, finding out they're shite, then accidentally playing them enough times to trigger a 3 year permanent deal and only realising it several weeks into the close-season is quite another.

That's from Saturday. The Record story that we're not offering him a deal came out after this.
I guess we'll find out soon enough but I'd be surprised if he was ever a serious possibility.
