Thought we did pretty well to be honest.

Hearts? A better bench than us is about all I would say.

Porteous absolutely pissed that match and big keV should be in on Saturday.

We were poor, but still the better team with the most chances. I've obviously underestimated how bad Hibs have been recently if that was doing well.

The stuff about us going there and delivering a scudding was always way overhyped. There's a bit of a gap between the teams but not a massive one.

It would be good if we could stop starting games really shitely. The first 25 was hideous and Hibs were well on top. Once things settled down we started playing in their half and creating chances but the sloppiness never fully left us. Frustrating result, but Hibs could have snatched it at the end and everyone else drew so it's not the worst.

Impressed by Simms who was a constant threat after a poor first half hour where he couldn't trap a bag of cement. Atkinson had some dodgy moments and took a while to get going but looks promising and clearly offers something different to Smith, could have had a very good assist in the first half if Boyce hadn't been sleeping. Sibbick was very good. Other than that, meh.

  2. I'll be annoyed if we don't win (obviously), but we won't be scudding anyone. No-one really believes that, it's just expectation management.

We've been consistent results-wise this season but we don't really do scuddings and we've only taken 1 point from 12 in our away games against other top six teams. We also don't have a clue what our defence is going to look like with the Souttar situation still unresolved and Halkett out with no proper alternatives at the moment.

I love that Maloney seems like he could be a Cathroesque ineffectual dweeb but it's a derby so I'd expect the Hibs players to be up for it regardless.

I've checked transfermarkt and you're right. Halkett has started every other game apart from Fir Park

but in the last 3 games he has went off after 50 minutes against Ross County, 71 minutes against St Johnstone and  81 against Celtic.

Yep and we looked a bit ropey after he went off against Ross County too.

Hopefully it's something we'll be looking at if Souttar leaves. We could do with an experienced back-up.

The game at Tynecastle this season was defined and decided by 2 early and uncharacteristic errors from Kelly, after that there was nothing in it.

The next game at Fir Park was probably our best performance of the season and won at a canter.

Even with that in mind I still can’t see past a fairly routine Hearts win here. We’re sitting in a very respectable league position but I feel we have issues all over the pitch.

I thought we dominated that game until the missed penalty swung the momentum. Devlin and Baningime ran the midfield that day.

We did indeed get pumped in the Fir Park game which (I think) is the only time we've not had Halkett in the starting line-up this season. Unfortunately it looks like he'll be missing again tomorrow and I really don't think we have an adequate replacement for what he does. Neilson tried shifting Souttar over and slotting Moore in at RCB last time and it looked ropey as f**k, so it'll be interesting to see if he tries something different here.

Really hope McKay is fit. He's our most creative player by miles.

  5. Pleasantly surprised by that signing, especially with it being permanent.

Hard to judge him based on his last spell but he looked promising then and he was a regular for Barnsley in their play-off run last season. Seems he suffered from the managerial change in the summer and a lot of their fans aren't happy about this.

He played RCB for Barnsley so I'd guess that's near enough confirmation that Souttar is off this month.

It wasn’t too bad till that thunderb*****d of an opening goal but we fell to bits for a while after that.

It wasn’t till they announced two minutes added on in the first half that hearts regained any composure

If the first half demonstrated why we’re not going to be in the top two the second showed why we’re not going to be in the bottom nine.

And even though we didn’t get a result the atmosphere was so much better with less Celtic fans

We just couldn't play through the midfield at all. We would probably have benefited from Baningime's composure and ability to play out of tight spaces earlier as opposed to Devlin's harum-scarum style but maybe he wasn't ready to play more than half an hour.

  7. Rotten performance, really. The 4-4-2 didn't work at all and too many players were off it. When Celtic did their now standard disappearing act in the last half-hour we put them under pressure but didn't create enough.

None of our rivals gained more than a point on us so I'm not too despondent, but we desperately need Halkett not to be injured. Somehow he's probably now our most important player.

I think Boyce would probably welcome having someone to take the pressure of him a little. Might even play alongside each other in some games. If Boyce gets injured, we only have converted wingers/number tens, and Euan Henderson as back up. It's an interesting point though. I think Boyce realises that like every other first choice player, we are only looking to bring in players who will actively compete with them for the shirt. We will be looking to find better than Boyce already, but it's up to him to show that he can see off the challenge.

I think Atkinson coming in gives us more width from full-back, meaning we're less reliant on the front three for that. That might mean we see two up front more often.

Boyce and Simms up front with McKay playing off them could be handy if Simms lives up to the billing.

Things started going downhill really steeply for Hearts almost immediately after he got injured but it’s not like there weren’t plenty of other reasons for that at the time.

"Post hoc ergo propter hoc" has never been more applicable. He wasn't even starting games before he got injured.

I was actually amazed he played as many games as he did in that second season. I don't remember him doing anything at all aside from that Auchinleck game.

Have we really dropped the guy that scored both our goals on Tuesday to play Andy fucking Halliday in a front three?

I've criticised team selections a couple of times this season and it's ended up going ok, but I'm properly baffled by this one. On paper it's possibly the least threatening line-up we've fielded all season.

Halliday was good today tbf. Really good header for the first and a nice set-up for the third.

Can't get too excited about winning a game like this but that's about as good as we could hope for. Completely in control throughout, didn't get distracted by the shocking refereeing decisions, passed the ball well and rattled in five goals. Underlines how much progress has been made since Brora.

    What was Demetri Mitchell like?

In terms of style I remember him being fast and a decent dribbler but I probably saw him play twice if you’re lucky.

I recall him being decent against us in one Edinburgh derby, sure he hit an absolute hammer of a shot that Marciano touched onto the bar but that’s about it.

Mitchell had talent but probably suffered from not really having a position. Played as a full-back in his first spell and looked great initially before starting to show a few defensive frailties. In his second season I think he mostly played on the wing and just wasn't effective there at all.

Maybe he'd be good as a LWB which I assume is where Hibs plan to use him?

Some memory on you, mate. I honestly couldn't remember half of the details of this, and didn't even bother thinking about it until folk started trying to claim we did something similar in order to get him from United in the first place.

All I remembered was us signing him for 6 figures in January and Dundee United getting relegated at Dens tbh.

Quite incredible that a point about the ethics of announcing pre-contracts from the same division during the season has triggered so much discussion about a transfer which... was not a pre-contract.

For the record, I don't care about said ethical discussion.

  14. 10 minutes ago, Kyle Reese said:

Dundee United were already relegated, and we were not due to play them again. You maybe didn't hear(/read) it all.

They might not have been mathematically able to catch us, but they did play us after that and weren't relegated until they played Dundee in April/May.

That's irrelevant, though, because we didn't sign him on a pre-contract. He left Dundee United immediately in January.

I think even if Beni is fit he'll only be on the bench. I don't think you can justify dropping Haring in current form, he's been our best player since coming back in.

Yeah, I'd have expected Haring to start, I just asked because he wasn't even on the bench on IAP's team so I wasn't sure if I'd missed something.

I see Neilson has confirmed he's out anyway this morning. Full squad available aside from him.
