Hopefully Souttar is not in the 18, could do without the distraction.

    Gordon

    Moore Halkett Kingsley

    Smith Haring Devlin Cochrane

    Woodburn Boyce McKay

Atkinson,  GMS, Ginnelly, Stewart, McEneff, Halliday + 1

Is Baningime not supposed to be back?

Wouldn't be surprised to see Atkinson slot straight in. He played as recently as the 18th of December and he'll have had a week's training with the squad.

Yeah, agree with this. It would be transparent and churlish to suggest Souttar isn’t one of our best players, but he benefits greatly from having such a solid base around and behind him. He’s definitely not irreplaceable. I’d rather we had managed to get him signed up, but Savage’s hit rate on players in has been pretty exceptional so far, so I’d actually not be too surprised if we managed to strengthen the whole team with around £400k and the wages saved. That’s if we get anything for him of course. I’ve faith in Smith and Moore too.

He is a good player and we almost certainly won't replace him with someone as good defensively and as classy on the ball, but getting someone about as good defensively and decent on the ball is achievable. If we can do that then the net effect of him leaving won't be so bad.

Moore might fit the latter description and played that position for his previous clubs so I'd imagine he'll get the nod initially. When he's played there for us I'd say he looked good in two of the games and had a shocker in the other (Motherwell away) so the jury's still out there.

Admittedly I don't think he's had an extended run there but I can't really remember Smith having a poor game at CB. I could see him eventually taking over if Moore isn't up to it.

Either way I think we're probably well covered at RCB for the rest of the season. We've missed Halkett more than Souttar when either has been missing this season so I'd be looking for cover/competition there instead.

  3. I don't think it's at all controversial to say Kingsley and even Halkett have performed at least as well as Souttar this season, but that doesn't mean they're as good or have as much potential. Look at McGinn and McGeouch at Hibs.

The system we play accentuates the positives and mitigates the negatives for each player. Halkett is a good penalty box defender (probably better than Souttar) but he's often poor on the ball and he's weak at 1v1 defending. He's good in the centre of the three but probably wouldn't be great either side. Kingsley is good at the left-sided Souttar role but isn't strong enough or dominant enough in the air to play in the centre of the three or in a two.

The system definitely plays to Souttar's strengths as well, but I'd be comfortable with him playing any of those positions in the three or in the centre of a four and I'd say he's got the right mix of attributes to adapt to a higher level. He's also the youngest and clearly has the most potential, which is why he's attracted interest.

Cling onto it mate.  pro-admin you've been down twice and won feck all ;)

Not sure why a Hibs fan wants to get into willy-waving about trophies and recent time spent in the diddy leagues. That's an open goal.

Good to know you boys rate Souttar these days though. He definitely wouldn't be overrated and made of glass if he'd signed a new deal.

I was going to ask if there's an "eye-bleeding drivel" thread but that's close enough.

We did, but in April, so there was no question of him coming before the end of the season

Ah, that makes sense now, thank you. Knew there was something.

We announced him right after it was confirmed we were top six and Livi bottom six, meaning we were no longer competitors and wouldn't be playing against them. There were rumours that it was a done deal several weeks beforehand.

I was quite happy to keep Souttar for the rest of the season rather than accepting six figures when it looked like he was going to England. Definitely not of that opinion now, gone as quickly as possible please, and I'm not that arsed whether it's for 50k or 500k.

I'd imagine we'll bring in a replacement when he goes, but I also wonder if Atkinson is effectively that replacement, given he frees up Moore to play his main position at RCB, which is probably also Smith's best position. I do still think we'll bring someone in, but it'll be someone who can cover across the back three rather than a like-for-like.

I think I read that that the Japanese lad is getting a call-up to the international squad, which could lessen our chances of getting him.

See Halkett has agreed a deal to stay on - need to tie Kingsley up as well.

If Souttar goes, we'd have Halkett, Kingsley, Moore, Smith, Cochrane, and maybe Haring and even Halliday to plug the gap.

The call-up happened several weeks ago and the games have since been cancelled, so it's not happening anymore. I think it was a squad entirely composed of home-based players so it wasn't their first team either.

Ultimately there's not much we can do if his current club doesn't want to sell. Hopefully this doesn't go the same way as the Elijah Adebayo deal last January (waste time negotiating with a club which doesn't want to sell, end up with Gnanduillet instead).

"reasonable chance", is the operative word there. Isn't that the point with these things? You are making a judgement call based not only on the team involved but the odds being offered. At 250/1 it's the largest jump and clearly from the money already placed, it's the divide between who is likely to be involved in the relegation dog fight and who isn't.

As I say, I don't gamble, I see little point in throwing money away.

Not really, because that "reasonable chance" is predicated on the extremely unlikely scenario in which they lose every single remaining game. If you take "reasonable chance" as the operative words there then you've definitely missed the point.

If you want the value bet then you're looking for 1) something that can realistically happen and 2) something where the bookies' odds are longer than you think they should be.

Motherwell finishing 12th fails on 1), but St Mirren finishing bottom at the bookies' implied chance of 6.7% arguably fits both criteria, even though I don't expect it to happen.

  8. 3 hours ago, Ric said:

I do not gamble, so this might be completely wrong, but for "value" surely Motherwell is the best bet there? Not saying Motherwell will be relegated, just that at 250/1 it's surely the best value. I could be completely wrong here, I really know next to f**k all about gambling.

Motherwell could lose every one of their remaining 18 games and still have a reasonable chance of avoiding bottom spot. It's not value if it's definitely not happening.

Stats say an even game and Ross C should have equalised. A bit jammy as usual.

They really don't. xG was 1.76 - 0.73 in our favour. We'd scored twice and hit the underside of the bar and the inside of the post before Ross Country had their first chance of note on 72 minutes. They put us under pressure for the last 20 but only had one proper chance in that time. We also had a total makeshift team on the pitch by that point.

I don't think we're stick-ons for 3rd, by the way. 5/6 point leads can disappear quickly and a lot will depend on what happens with Souttar/Halkett and incomings next month.

Unusually for us, we seem to have developed real consistency against the bottom 6. We're unbeaten against them and have won 5/5 so far in the second round of games. That's coincided with a drop-off in results against the top 6: 9 points from 15 in the first round and 0/12 so far in the second.

Based on that, we really want to have things done and dusted by the split. One thing which might work in our favour in that respect is that Hibs and Aberdeen still have Celtic and Rangers to play before the second round of games finishes, while we've got St Johnstone at home. Also, once the derby is out of the way, we'll only have 1 away game left against the current top 6 before the split. We need to make sure we take advantage of those factors.

Fair enough - the story seems to be popping up all over the place, so you never know - and it's a nippy forward, which should be along the lines of what we're after.

Nando will surely be away, and possibly Walker.

I'm told the bookies have changed the odds on Hertz finishing 3rd - wonder if that's because they're expecting us to lose Soapy - he will his suitors, no doubt.

Stating the obvious, but if Halkett is injured long term and Souttar leaves then we're in real trouble without a really good replacement. We've not seen much of Moore at CH and we've looked alarmingly ropey when Halkett hasn't been available, especially considering how bad he was in his first 18 months/2 years.

I wonder if it'd be more economical to keep Souttar until the summer rather than accepting a sub-£1m bid and risk chucking 3rd.

  11. First half was very good and the game should have been done by half-time. The front three were very good, particularly Woodburn who had his best game for us.

The second half was sloppy as f**k but we still probably looked more likely to add a third than concede. The last 20/25 minutes after County pulled one back were excruciating and we'd lost control of the game by that point. I don't think they created many clear chances in that time but the wide players were a constant threat and we couldn't make it stick up front.

Massive win considering Aberdeen, Motherwell and Hibs also won, especially with a depleted squad. The winter break probably comes at a good time for us.

Very happy to be proven wrong but that line-up looks like an overthought mess. I count at least 5 players not playing in their primary positions (not even counting Halliday at LWB). 6 defenders, 1 defensive midfielder and a front 3 composed of a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and a winger who have scored a combined total of 3 goals this season (all in the same game).

I've definitely been proven wrong so far. We should be further ahead.

I get that we're missing a bunch of players, but here's an example of a team we could have played with the same set of players and no-one out of position:

    Gordon

    Smith Souttar Halkett Cochrane

    Haring McEneff

    McKay Walker GMS/Woodburn

    Gnanduillet

  14. I knew Ross County had turned the corner a bit but didn't realise quite how good their form has been. They've only lost to Celtic (97th minute winner) and Rangers at Ibrox since October so I won't be taking a win for granted given the players we'll be missing.

On the team selection, I think Moore struggled with Charles-Cook when he played right-back in Dingwall and he got embarrassingly roasted by Kent a couple of weeks back, so as much as it might be an unpopular opinion, I'm hoping Smith is fit and will come into a back four.
