  1. We look like a team with no striker and no proper wing-backs. Everything falls apart at the edge of the box. It'll be a massive shock if we score in this set-up.

Only surprise is that Dundee haven't pressed more but that's maybe because they've got f**k all on the bench so they're saving that for later.

  2. I know we thumped Dundee United with a similar line-up, but no strikers, a centre-back at right-wing-back and Andy fucking Halliday at left-wing-back is guaranteed to be hideous to watch.

I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, but even allowing for injuries/suspensions, that is a baffling selection against a team with defensive injury problems. If Dundee press high then they won't have to do any defending because we won't be able to get up the pitch. We've seen that plenty of times recently with this formation.

  3. I can't remember us ever playing a team with an "injury crisis" and not struggling, so I'm not falling for it this time.

Swapping back to 3-4-3 seems to be a popular shout but I'd be tempted to stick with the 4-2-3-1 with Woodburn or McEneff coming in for Ginnelly. Woodburn has been poor recently but I think the number 10 role might suit him and I'd be interested to see how he gets on there. He's also not afraid to shoot when he gets the opportunity which is something that can't always be said of others.

  4. Very frustrated after that. Defending like absolute fucking idiots for 10 minutes didn't help, but even then we had plenty of chances to get back into the game.

The red card probably didn't affect the result but it was incredible fucking stupidity from Ginnelly.  If our next game had been on Boxing Day I'd have been convinced he'd done it on purpose.

4-2-3-1 looks like it could be a decent option for us. We look more threatening with 4 attacking players and I don't think the defensive issues were a fault of the system. Hopefully we'll see it again next week at Dens.

  5. Our away form since winning at Tannadice in August: DDDLLL.

Needless to say, that needs to prove if we want to finish 3rd.

It'll be interesting to see if we stick with 4 at the back or revert back to the 3.  Livi really struggled with our ability to stretch the game in the 3-4-3 at Tynecastle, but it seems to have been found out a bit and Thursday showed 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 is an option for us.

Sure, let's encourage every single player that overruns a ball to go down injured and get the ball back.

You put the ball out if a player is clearly in distress or for a head injury.  Other than that get on with it and get the guy treatment when there's a natural break in the play

Even if Hearts had decided to put the ball out of play, convention would have dictated that Celtic return it. Instead they got to start an attack of their own in the middle of the pitch, unchallenged.

Tbh I'm far more annoyed with Madden stopping play when we had the ball in a great position cause Jota had a fecking hamstring injury than with the goal, offside though it clearly was.  Then giving Celtic the ball back

I was fucking fizzing at this. You can claim the offside goal was an honest mistake but that was just an objectively outrageous call by a shitebag referee.

    No wind up here.

Pretty sure the former Hearts captain Berra just echoed my thoughts on the goal. Without VAR you cannot prove that’s offside

Alternatively "Celtic fan who recently left Hearts acrimoniously" Christophe Berra.

Tbh I think there's merit in that approach with Celtic because of how much running they do.  And we had brilliant chances to take something, so I wouldn't be overly critical of tonight's tactics.

Not really a criticism of the tactics as such, just frustrating that we've found ourselves chasing the game in the second half each time. I can accept being second best, but we were poor on the ball in the first half.

  9. Maybe we should try playing in both halves instead of just the second. All 4 games v the OF in Neilson's second spell have followed the same pattern.

Offside goal aside, extremely frustrating not to take something out of that. Mackay-Steven stumbling when he was through on goal summed it up.

  10. Jack's absence at the Euros definitely feels like an underrated contributor to our early exit. He'd probably have started every game and, even if you don't rate him that highly, the balance of the midfield in the Hampden matches was way off without two passers in the middle.

On the other hand, he might have delayed Gilmour's emergence otherwise, so maybe it worked out for the best. He's still a really good option to have and he'd have been my first choice replacement if Gilmour had picked up a suspension the other night.

    You are reading it right.

But it's not really similar because they are donations, not loans. There's no requirement to pay them back and we budget them accordingly. If they were to dry up, we wouldn't spend it.  '

The quantity of the donation also pretty much exactly matches the loss in revenue from the previous season. I'd expect the increase in turnover this year to exceed last season's donations, meaning they'll no longer be necessary.

I've no idea what the arrangement with the benefactor(s) is but my impression has always been that the money has gone towards 1) building the stand and 2) getting through COVID - not about chucking money at wages. That's reflected in the fact our wage bill under Budge has always been <60% turnover, with the obvious exception of last season.

  12. Given what was at stake and the quality of the opposition (absentees notwithstanding), that was easily the best Scotland performance I've seen in the flesh. Our big wins in the last couple of decades have usually been defined by desperate defending and a bit of luck, but we showed last night that we're a proper team who can keep calm, soak up pressure and make intelligent decisions on the ball. Even at 2-0 I wasn't completely sure we'd win the game, but that's probably my own neurosis - objectively it was a very comfortable win which was never really under much threat.

The fact Souttar came in and put in that performance just makes it even sweeter. Only a few months ago, one poster on here claimed he was comfortably the worst defender we've capped in the last 5 years and he wouldn't get a game for a top 6 club. It was a dreadful take even at the time and he's still got a bit to go before he proves himself as an international defender, but what a brilliant turnaround in that time.

It would take a pretty unlikely set of results for any team not to finish in the top two with 20 points. Even with Austria and Israel both taking 6 points from Moldova and the Faroes we've still ended up miles clear of them.

Obviously I'd have bitten your hand off for 2nd place a few months ago, but if you'd told me at the start of the group that we'd be sitting on 20 points at this stage I'd be a bit disappointed that outright qualification wasn't possible.

I didn't say it was.  Allowing Austria and Israel to take only one point each from us was the key.  The point being discussed related to the margin ultimately being quite large.

    Fair enough.

The strong team beat everyone this time, not just us, so that was helpful.  We also failed to slip up against the minnows as so often happens.

These facts allowed our 4 points against our rivals to be decisive.

If Austria and Israel had taken points off Denmark we'd still be ahead of them and quite possibly have it in our own hands to win the group on Monday.

I don't think other teams doing us a favour is really the story here.

Now that Austria have beaten Israel, it looks like we've absolutely skooshed second place

Despite most of our wins being pretty narrow, I kind of feel we have skooshed it. If you looked at each of the last 4 games in context, a draw wouldn't have been a disaster in any of them, but we won all of them and qualified with a game to spare. There was a fair bit of margin for error in this group, even after a couple of early draws, but we didn't need it.

Seen a few comments along these lines. Woodburn was playing wide left, Ginnelly played at centre forward in place of Boyce. See Hearts Twitter feed for comments from Ginnelly on asking Boyce for advice on how to play as a centre forward before the game.

Yeah, Woodburn was pretty much playing the role he always plays, although there was definitely more pace and fluidity about the front three in general.
