For me Robbo was a bit of a hinderence to us yesterday as @Rory said, almost everything was negative in terms of always looking to play backwards. Without being left sided you could see he couldn’t really get down the left to suppport Sutherland, which probably helped contribute to Ethan having such a poor game. That’s not on Robbo though and fits in with the other comments about the subs and looking makeshift - yesterday was like seeing a Brian Rice team being put together again, and although the absence of Wales and Steven obviously make a huge difference, I don’t believe we needed to be so makeshift yesterday - that’s unfortunately on Andy.

Other than his first game against Edinburgh, I’d say that’s the first time Andy has really got anything wrong but there were a few things I would have changed yesterday. Firstly, left back for me 100% needs to be a predominantly left footed player. With both Cammy and Sutherland able to play there (although admittedly neither are natural defenders) we shouldn’t have been needing to have Robbo there in the first place (bar an emergency!). If Cammy wasn’t fit then I can’t understand why you wouldn’t start Sutherland there with Coulson ahead of him. Very much a Chipper special of square pegs in round holes.

Felt there was then another mistake when Morgyn Neill went off as there was the opportunity to switch Robbo on to the right hand side while bringing on Cammy or Coulson. Ironically I would have brought Miko on anyway after 15/20 minutes for LD (pushing Scougall forward) as we needed some bite in the middle of the park. No way LD should have been on as long as he was, especially off the back of his performance on Tuesday, and he looked absolutely gassed in the first half. I’m surprised with the amount of game time he’s had after such a lengthy time out.

As others have said, Buchanan pretty much the only one with pass marks yesterday although he should score right at the start. He’s unlucky when Kilsby fouls him in the 2nd half as well as it’s red with no cover (seeing the arm going across Buchanan from behind the goals I can understand the ref not seeing it but disappointed the linesman hasn’t picked it up). 2 incidents that obviously change the game but in truth Queens were the better team, wanted it more and deserved the 3 points.

Turned out to be a get out of jail free day with the Cove and Montrose results but that’s a very disappointing week in which I really would have been looking for a minimum of 3 or 4 points, which would have cemented our hopes for a playoff position. It’s an absolute must win next week and hopefully Bobby Goals (and Taylor Steven for that matter) is back as we look pretty toothless up front without him.

We'll need to agree to disagree on Robbo, Kevchenko. For me we've been weak defensively at left back and Cammy was a bombscare there on Tue. I can't remember Jon losing the ball all game (I'd far rather he passed the ball back or sideways to a team mate, rather than punt the ball aimlessly forwards when a forward pass isn't on - that's not negative, it's what a good footballer does), or making a significant defensive error

It looked to me like Miko was maybe going to come on anyway before Neill broke down, but perhaps that was going to be precautionary re Morgyn. I thought myself like you that he was possibly coming on for LD.

Wonder if Cammy wasn't fully fit? Felt Robbo was poor today, we usually have Cammy or Ethan overlapping and putting crosses in but Robbo just played backwards 90% of the time. Our full backs attacking and playing high has been one of our strengths this season.

We were disappointing all over. Scougall was uncharacteristically poor with the ball, Roberts was quiet for most the game. Sutherlands deliveries from corners and free kicks were poor, could here him getting frustrated with himself in the second half.

Losing Neill wasn't ideal with Andy being the only defender on the bench. Miko done OK when he came on. Hopefully it's nothing too serious. LD done more work defensively than I've seen of him too.

Buchanan one of the few players to get pass marks. Felt he should have had a free kick when he was tripped and could see Andy was angry at the refs decision.

Hopefully Steven is back next week and we'll have Wales available again.

Robbo was about ten times better today than Cammy was at Kelty; he was just Robbo, a solid, composed performance.

We were poor, no doubt about it and I agree we look pretty ordinary when Wales and Steven are out. Unlike Kelty I thought Queens started nervously and if we score that early chance (which we certainly should have), I could have seen us dominating. We didn't though and they played their way into the game, Mumbongo giving them a focal point and threat, grew in confidence and deserved to go in ahead.

We were better second half, but QotS defended well and looked every bit as dangerous as we did (which wasn't difficult). I felt our only real threat was Buchanan and, laterally , Coulson on the wings. Queens finished the stronger (our subs seemed a bit haphazard); a big win for them and the battle to stay out of ninth is looking very interesting.

Hopefully we can bounce back next week against Annan, but clearly they are in form and we will need to play well to get back on track.

PS Cheers Messrs Offord, Henderson and O'Hara.

Tidser showing his experience with that elbow. If we had VAR in league one, that would definitely have been a red.

Agree with Waspie, Sammon up top encourages us to punt balls up to him which doesn't work. Hopefully Roy gets the nod on Saturday.

    *shudders*

Re punting balls to Sammo, I do wonder why that is given he rarely controls them and isn't very good in the air.

  4. Kudos to Tidser and his players last night. Out played and out fought us from the first whistle. Deserved win.

I really liked the aggression you played with. Johnston seems to epitomize that - anytime I see him, he's a handful. Not sure what he's like on an ongoing basis?

Was also interested to see Stefan McCluskey at right back and looking so comfortable there.

An important win for Kelty tonight.

It ends a rotten run for them.  Almost every side seems capable of digging out a big result.  Just the one exception.

Kelty were excellent last night. Fired up from the first whistle, never let us settle and played a lot of good stuff.

Exactly the sort of performance that was needed in their circumstances.

From Saturday's point of view, I'd expect a positive reaction from the Alloa players. Bobby Wales will miss that one too though and we'll likely play Sammo or Roy in his place, which weakens us.

everyone in this league are fighting for playoffs or promotion, not one team is as i type sitting neutral,  its going to be hard fought tight battle in every game going forward .

Very much this. Our next two home games look "easier" on paper, but both Annan and QotS have to win games now. I expect both to be battles (yes, even against Marvin Bartley's side).

Couldn't make the game last night but by the sound of it we were awful.

Andy has done an absolutely brilliant job since he came in, probably much better than anyone would have expected. To win 7 out of the last 9 is excellent.

However over the last three games, two of which have been against teams in the bottom half, we have conceded eight goals.

Looking at the stats last night the midfield looked like it created very little as well.

I would bring Kev and Virtanen into the team on Saturday as it gives a better balance.

Need to pick up a decent haul of points over the next three games before a very difficult run in.

As I mentioned, last night was a game which would have suited them, Miko in particular. Saturday's game likely to be different, but I'd be tempted to start one of them.

Got what we deserved out of that tonight (could argue we didn’t even deserve such a narrow margin of defeat to be honest) as, bar a 10 minute spell at the start of the second half, we were god awful throughout.

Kelty should have been out of sight by halftime and after scoring (some cross from big Morgyn Neill) we struggled to get out our half for the last 30 minutes.

Unfortunately it was reminiscent of our early season performances - slow laborious passes across the back before an aimless punt upfield to nobody. On the rare occasion we did put it in the vicinity of Sammon he guided pretty much every flick on to a Kelty player, it was one of ‘those’ Sammon performances. Everything was just too slow tonight, too many touches and it was only really Miko Virtanen that zipped it around a bit when he came on.

Far too many off it tonight - Scouggs, LD and Sammon in particular - and probably only PJ (and some wasteful Kelty finishing in the first half) to thanks that it wasn’t worse.

With Bobby Wales away, we had Sammo up front. He is not effective as a target man. His first touch is often deficient when he is under pressure. We spent lots of possesion putting balls to him that were often lost. He is a good player in many respects, such as his ability to read the game and get to where an opportunity awaits but he is poor as a target as we move forward. The last 10 minutes of yesterdays game were the only time we started to look a little threarening with Quinn Coulson and Buchanan helping to pass the ball, as opposed to booting it forwards which was playing right into the energetic Kelty teams strength.

Positives last night were the performances of Kurtis and Scouggs.

Can't help but feel that PJ doesn't command his area enough. Defence seems to be improving but still needs work.

On which note, Brian Rice was at the game, standing behind the Kelty end goals.

Hey, it's all about opinions! 🙂 Personally I thought Scougs (and Kurtis) did OK. Kelty's midfield deserve the credit for nullifying them.

  9. Outplayed and outfought by a good Kelty Hearts side last night. They were at us from the first whistle and we never got going first half at all; eleven shots to nil tells that story.

We had defended OK in our box and that plus some poor Kelty finishing meant we got to half-time 0-0. Started much better in the second half and when Cammy scored I felt we would go on to get more.

We didn't press home that advantage though and Kelty, to their credit, regrouped and got their deserved reward, although both  goals were poorly defended from an Alloa point of view, plus the first in particular carrying some luck.

I agree Sammo was poor first half, but I though he did well in the second. LD was more ineffectual, a buzzing Cawley or Scougs would have been better in there (it was a game which would have suited Miko's aggression). As expected Wales a big loss to our style of play.

Have to feel sorry for Cammy despite his goal. That's too many games this season when we have been weak down his flank - not his fault, he isn't a natural left back - but surely Andy G will address that weakness in the close season. On the subject of full backs, Stefan McCluskey looked the part deeper.

We just need to bounce back against QotS. Let's see what Andy does to counter Bobby Goals absence then. Personally I'd rest Sammo and LD.

Apparently they didn't have time to rehearse, so Eric was unsure how Previn would cope. His reaction when Previn says that his baton is in Chicago is absolutely genuine: he realised that the sketch was going to work.

Just watched the whole thing, hadn't seen it for years - it's every bit as good as I remembered. Eric Morecambe's applause at the end shows, I think, how good he thought Previn was.

My Dad was a big M&W fan and watching it again I could picture him laughing. A nice memory.

That never fails to make me laugh almost to the point of tears.  Previn could have been an actor - his timing is magnificent.    But the thing that really makes it is the orchestra, who don’t know what’s coming.  You can see several of these very proper musicians wiping away tears of laughter. 😆 A beautiful piece of television.

    This.

We seem to always go back to 4-2-3-1 formation.

Remember Peter Grant tried his diamond midfield then eventually gave up and reverted back to it. Brian Rice tried formations which I didn't think were invented yet...and here we are back to the old tried and tested- it always seems to get the best out of the players.

    😂

  15. 1 hour ago, Waspie said:

Agree 100%.While the results under Brian Rice were generally ok (decent for first season and a half, rubbish this season), the football was grim and we never really looked like a coherent team. Very frustrating given he inherited a capable squad and added good players to it. I found his reign a massive slog.

Andy very quickly did the things lots of fans had often called for. Players in their most effective roles in a settled system and allowing partnerships to develop. No surprise players grow in confidence in that situation. The system he settled on was the best one as well. 4 at the back suits the defenders better than 3, and the 3 behind a striker or something similar suits our squad with so many good creative players. Having nailed this down so well I'm sure he could tweak things when required and still get good results. That's the way to run a team, not chopping and changing all the time and playing people out of position.

But I'd be doing a big disservice to Andy to just say the turnaround is down to him sorting out the obvious issues with the way the team was set up. The leadership and communication he always showed as a player are clearly to the fore. People want to play for him and he has everyone pulling in the same direction. When things go wrong he speaks openly and honestly and sets out a way forward. Fans will accept defeats and bad days if they can see what a manager is trying to do and if it's clear things in general are going in the right direction. I don't expect Alloa to win every week but I do want to see a team set up properly and trying to make the best of what we have. Andy has been nailing that so far. Whatever happens the rest of the season - and obviously there are going be bad days and setbacks - there are real grounds for optimism.

I also wasn't quite as effusive as some fans about Roberts earlier in the season. Work rate and drive clearly really impressive but undermined a bit by decision making. Has continued to improve though and absolutely nailed down his place now. Perhaps down to growing in confidence and perhaps again knowing exactly what his role is in the team and how it fits with those around him. Wouldn't begrudge him a ft move if he could get it but hopefully he'll stick around. Really good story to see a player kicking on in his late 20s and given what he puts in he deserves it.

I was one of those who was impressed by what Kurtis brought to the side from early on. He gave us something we hadn't had in midfield for a while, energy and drive, with the ability to surge forward with the ball (not as often or effectively as we are seeing now admittedly). He wasn't perfect of course, but no one was in that side.

I agree he's improved under Andy G though (many have) and, as you say, confidence and knowing exactly what his role is are likely factors in this improvement.

    Comfortable home win. Next.

I'm not so sure it will be comfortable.

I get the difference between the two sides at the moment and, on paper, we are clearly favourites, but I expect a decent contest - I watched the Falkirk game and thought QotS did OK.

I'm expecting a narrow Alloa win.

Just a heads up to those who are not travelling, Saturday will be a PPV day - but I'll get a product sorted after the Kelty game.

Last 'open' slot of the season as the semi-final playoffs on the Saturday 11th are still blocked and the final will be on Alba.

Doesn't look like the Kelty game is available PPV?

Good to see the club starting to get things in place for next year. He's done an excellent job with a squad he inherited, I'd imagine he'd be quite happy to keep the majority of the current squad if possible.

Has he officially retired as a player or is it another player/manager contract?

I'd imagine so. As @Father Barrys Sign (Top Half) posted earlier replacing our excellent loanees will be his real tester.

Here is a job description for inclusion mentor in Nottinghamshire, where the quoted person lives.

From reading other job adverts it's about stopping pupils from being excluded, working with children who have behavioural difficulties, as opposed to inclusion in the sense of "the wokes having special classes for Somali crack babies" type of thing.

Appalling salaries for these jobs, which must be very hard work.  One advert has the following responsibilities

Salary is £16,586 - who the hell wants to do that job for that pay?

Generally, certainly where I was working, modern job descriptions read as though they need a near-genius to do the job. They are often a pile of shite IMO.
