This is it in a nutshell. We knew Rice had recruited a decent squad, it was frustrating to see them underperforming. Squad is actually playing to their capability now, and then some. The transformation in Taylor Steven in particular, hes a revelation now for us. We have so much attacking threat it seems.

Defence still needs work, and with some real key players only on loan there will be activity in summer which will be Andys next big challenge as a manager.

The challenges however are lining up in a sequence that's perfect for his development.

Still a lot of football to be played but we look good for a playoff spot right now.

Spot on and I'm sure Andy is already speaking to players. I expect some good recruitment from him, but we'll see.

We do. Even a couple of weeks ago, I commented to a friend that I didn't think we were good enough to go up through the playoffs. Now I reckon we have a fighting chance.

An excellent attacking display yesterday and the difference in terms of fitness, movement and organisation in the team since AG took over has been incredible.

I have missed a few games but can honestly say that was the best 90 mins from and Alloa team I have witnessed since pre pandemic times when we were sitting mid table in the championship during Peter grants first season.

Not a failure in our ranks yesterday and probably deserved to score a lot more goals .

    Roll on next week

With LD now thrown into the mix and Quinn looking like he's upped his game (with the competition and space we are creating), both added to Wales, Steven and an improving Sutherland the attacking potency we have is as high as it's been for a long time.

Andy G uses the word often, but the biggest difference to me from BR's team is confidence.

    Well deserved for both.

The Tell Him He's Pele interview with Andy Graham was an excellent listen. Unfortunately I think that @Francesc Fabregassaid in a recent Terrace podcast that they're no longer available. Perhaps Craig Fowler could be convinced to add them to the Terrace Podcast back catalogue.

It was indeed. Finished off by Andy's acapella summary. 😁

I really enjoyed the THHP podcasts, especially the ones with Alloa players, but many others too. Some great stories.

I'm always all for Hurley content, but could never really get my head round the weirdness/wrongness/madness that it was actually the bold Damian who shot most of her content.

Her son directing her in an age-gap lesbo romp though actually blows my mind. I mean, wt actual f? "Right maw, if you could just get your chebs out a bit more, then position that lassie  between your legs and get ready to writhe about as if you're enjoying a right good rug munching, okay?" Perfect. "Aaand, ACTION"!!!

    Just wrong on every level.

    That's one opinion.

The irony of the one club in ten who reported a profit last season being the one who has subsequently had an insolvency event is not lost on me!

It's pretty clear that clubs at this level are generally spending money they can't afford. Most of them have had money left over from Covid that they've been able to use over the last couple of years but I'd imagine that's largely run out now. I wonder if there will be a reset of wage levels at this level of football in the next few months? With our Board announcing that they are leaving at the end of the season last week after basically being in charge for about 15 years, it remains to be seen if someone else with wealth will step in or if we'll have to factor back our budget significantly. Hamilton, Alloa, Cove, Kelty and Edinburgh were being supported by businessmen also, though Kelty aren't now unless they've got someone else in, not sure?

Falkirk are big enough to support their spending in practice although they've still apparently managed to lose a fortune over the last few years.

I don't know enough about Stirling to know where the funding came from that let them overspend to that degree. I assume it's not a bottomless pit since as far as I know they are run by their Supporter's Trust. Also not sure if anyone bankrolls Montrose or if it's just run with the commercial income / gate receipts they get?

    Fascinating stuff. Scottish football, eh?

I've had a look at the Confirmation Statement you referenced. Expected to see three, maybe a couple more, separate shareholders, not SEVENTY-FIVE!

There's quite a few names I recognise, some surprising some less so, but the vast majority I don't. Presumably they are historic. I know Mulraney tried to buy all existing shareholders out and when a couple of the larger ones at that time refused, he simply increased the share capital to make their holdings meaninless/worthless. They should have taken his generous offer IMO.

I actually had a look across our division to see what the general position was as I expected to see losses pretty much across the board. I wasn't far wrong.

Hamilton and Kelty use a June year end and haven't yet filed June 2023 accounts as they have to the end of March to do that. I had to look at June 2022 which isn't ideal. And Cove use an October year end bizarrely so their last filed accounts are mostly from their previous League One Championship season and partly from the first few months of the Championship one. Annan are a Community Benefit Society, not a company and don't publish accounts. Suffice to say however that as a members club they are pretty much condemned to trading more or less at a breakeven cash level year on year.

Of the other 9, Hamilton lost more than £850k in their last published accounts! In a year where they would have received Premiership Parachute Payments. I don't know if they had asset impairments or something to lead to that. Edniburgh City made a profit in the year to May 2023 but they (and Kelty) file Micro accounts which are even more vague than Alloa's! I imagine they may have benefited from significant sponsorship from Forth Capital in that year. Everyone else made losses of somewhere between £60k (Kelty) and £190k (Queen of the South & Alloa). Falkirk, Cove, Montrose and Stirling all lost in excess of £100k also. You'd assume Cove's current figures are worse than they were in a season they won the league and played in the Championship.

    Good grief!

The Confirmation Statement on Companies House as at the end of December 2023 has their current shareholdings out of 30,000 issued shares. Mike Mulraney has 15 in his own name as well as the controlling interest in Mulraney Holdings.

Comparing retained profits between the 2023 and 2022 accounts and 2022 and 2021 accounts give the reported loss for the year.

Thanks m8, I'll have a look. Haven't really used Companies House for about thirty-five years! It certainly has changed, much easier to get information. Does that make your life easier?

  8. 10 minutes ago, Skyline Drifter said:

...............£120k plus any losses in the current year.

Unless I'm missing something the loss of £190k in 2023 is actually an improvement on the loss of £240k for 2022. Although there was a large profit in 2021 which presumably at least mainly as a result of the extensive Covid grants in that year.

Looks like these extra shares were issued in July 2023 and that Andrew Allan took on shares at that point also. Mulraney Holdings now own 57.38% whilst Andrew Allan owns 38.25%

Thanks for this. Where can you see this information - companies house (not somewhere I'm familiar with).

Don't quote me on any accounting related topics either. Beyond this number is bigger than that number that's as sophisticated as I'll look at it.

Think increased cost is just a symptom of the times. The last few years have been massively inflated in terms of costs for everything and while that's happened we've also ran a big playing squad for a good few years now. As someone who really notices the lack of real estate in the programme - that's been way too big!

    Bottom line is this though

    image.png.1000d0a0e3e630d129665814adf00ee0.png

Both good points. Second one is key of course.

I imagine Alloa Athletic's financial position is similar to a lot of smaller clubs in Scotland and better than quite a number too.

It's way more your forte, I looked at that same balance sheet and my initial thought was an asset transfer from the clubs books to Mike's company, although at 190k must have been something substantial.

Again I might be completely barking up the wrong tree, speculation and mighty leaps of faith drew me to that conclusion.

If Mulraney properties have an extra 190k in their assets then it would make sense to me.

A reasonable assumption, but such an asset transfer wouldn't have a large impact on the p&l account, unless there was a big loss based on transfer value vs book value. Note 5 to the accounts (detail of fixed assets) shows there were no asset transfers at all. So there's another reason for the loss.

I think @LeodhasXD 's comment about increased costs is likely to be at least part of the reason. Interestingly note 4 gives the average number of employees (including directors) as 29, a reduction from 33 in 2021/22.

The share issue @Dink mentions seems to have all been to Mulraney (Holdings) Limited. Nothing I can see suggesting Andrew Allan is a significant investor - maybe that changed in the current year, but I expect Mike will keep 100% control.

Amounts owed to group companies stood at £360k at year end (May 2023 - nil in 2022). We know £240k of that was converted into shares later on, but that still leaves £120k. Wonder if that will be repaid soon?

I've just had a look at our most recent filings at Companies House, covering the 2022-23 season. £240,000 of debt to the Mulraney Group was converted to shares and a further £160,000 was raised through a share issue, and it looks like that was needed just to keep the club's financial position on an even keel. The way that we set out our accounts means that details are hard to come by, and my understanding of accounts is sketchy to say the least, but on face value it doesn't make for great reading.

A friend sent me the balance sheet only, no notes and don't think there will be a p&l account.

I must say I was surprised at the size of the loss (£190k). I suspect there have been some provisions in there. Certainly not a good year on the surface with £45k net current assets going to £153k net current liabilities.

I'll try and look at the full accounts on Companies House.

I did like Sammons against Motherwell but I think youve covered the main ones. 2 horse race between O'Donnell and Roberts for me to date.

I'd include Taylor's against the Binos with those two. Agree about Sammo"s goal - think that should be included in any voting list.

I think Taggart will move to centre half soon. He's getting older and full back position is largely a young man's game. He still reads the game extremely well.

Odonnell sub a bit of both. We had to get back to front a lot quicker with a man short in midfield but he appeared to limp to the dugout as Alloa celebrated the third goal from the corner.

Good point. As I've said recently I feel our central defence is better with Taggs in there. Let's see what Andy does in the summer re both full back positions.

Stevens out of contract in the Summer, but im hoping he gets a new one with us, especially as we've started playing wingers again.  Even in his cameos you could see he had the right mentality to make it.

I do worry he'll look at Cammy Ballantyne, who effectively wasted 2 years with us waiting on a chance, and decide to join a Championship side who'll give him guaranteed game time instead.

At his age he certainly needs to be playing regularly. You can see the improvement in him over his time at Alloa.

Personally I don't think he's ready for the Premiership yet.

That game was a tough watch for spells and did nothing for my nerves. Thought the game overall was pretty even and the stats on BBC sport would sound that out. Great bit of shithousery putting Sammon on for a corner then firing the corner kick low into the near post.

The red was a weird one. Just a few players challenging for the ball it seemed then the ref very suddenly stopped play and brandished the straight red. Nobody around me could shed any light on it either.

Both teams will be disappointed with their respective leaky defences but taking a win away from a game that had scoring draw written all over it will be a huge boost for the Mo and I hope it buckles Alloa a bit. There's only two playoff places up for grabs and it's still too close to call.

The less said about the Alloa bairns running about with lumps of wid the better.

Also, Andy (the fallen Mo fan) is doing well and not suffering any after affects of his episode.

Wasn't at the game, but based on your narrative Cawley must have been guilty of foul or abusive language (I think is the Laws wording these days, used to be foul AND abusive language).

As @Kevchenko says, very unlike Kev and I agree he will be gutted. I may be wrong, but I think that's his only red in the 400+ games he's played for Alloa.

Good to hear Andy is OK.

Certainly looks like the two from three battle for a play off place between ourselves and Cove is hoping to be an exciting and, likely, tight one.

Pleased for young Sutherland getting off the mark. Steven and Wales continuing their February goalscoring form into March.
