Always think it’s worth comparing last season’s squad with what we have so far. I think we’re at this so far if Telfer and McGill have signed up:

    Rae

    Ballantyne, Watson, Fordyce, ATS

Aiken, Devenny, Frizzell, McCabe, McMaster, Telfer

    Gallagher, McGill, McGregor, O’Connor, Todorov

    Unknown - Hutton, Prince

Left - Byrd, Riley, Deveney, Stanway, Dixon, Salim, Smith

Stanway > Aiken, Smith > O’Connor, Salim > Todorov seem obvious replacements so far.

We’ve made a good start defensively keeping the solid defence that finished last season. A new starting centre back is the main priority, with a left back required too. Another centre back as backup would be nice too depending on the budget but we have Watson, McCabe and ATS who can all cover there. I’m assuming Hutton is even less keen to play next season, so a backup keeper is probably required too.

Midfield is a slight concern. I’m happy with all the players we have but it feels a bit one paced at the moment and lacks some physicality and strength. I still feel we need at least one stronger midfielder anyway.

I’m happy with the forward options so far. Gallagher and Todorov are good options as the main forward and McGill and McGregor are a good start as wide forwards. I don’t know if O’Connor is better through the middle or not but hopefully he can replace Smith. I’d like another wide option either way as we shouldn’t rely too heavily on McGregor just yet.

We're in a decent place but now the exciting part starts with the new signings and it seems everyone is mostly in agreement on the positions needing filled. We finished 3rd in League 1 last year and it's questionable at the moment if we've improved our starting 11:

O'Connor - Whilst he's an unknown it would be massive if he turned out be better than Smith.

Aiken - Faces a lot of competition for a central midfield and again it would be a bonus if he became a regular starter.

Todorov - On the face of it an excellent signing but given the way Rhys likes to set up it looks like either him or Gal to start.

Anyway, as Rhys alluded to, the quality signings are still to come.

Great news if Gabby has resigned, not so fussed about Telfer, not the worst though. However, still need a decent number of new, strong players in as we wont stay up with the team from last season plus Todorov. Not complaining about the business done so far but need more.

McCabe said exactly that in his Lanarkshire live interview, happy to retain most of the squad and now need to add some quality.

Yes, but you have to accept there is a larger element of risk than other signings who have more of a CV. Obviously you sign them with the hope they'll add to the team, but signing 2 players who've never played first team football (except a few minutes for O'Connor) and expecting them to go straight into a Championship starting 11 is a huge risk, to me anyway. All youth players at bigger clubs are 'highly rated' yet most never make it, so I'm reserving judgement until I see them.

It's not at all a criticism of the signings, the flip side of the argument is they'll potentially have a higher ceiling than a more established signing and could be brilliant. I'd just like to make sure we have a relatively experienced group of players for the Hibs boys to come into so that if they aren't as good as we've been told it's not a major issue.

Totally agree that it's a risk but obviously Rhys thinks they're up to it.

Depending on how much we're paying for them then it could be a major issue.

'Highly rated' is the most meaningless phrase in football though. It essentially means people think he's good despite no hard evidence at that level to prove it. Anyone on the books at a professional football club at that age gets the 'highly rated' tag, and we've seen first hand that plenty are pretty poor.

Not saying that will be the case with the Hibs boys at all, but it's impossible to have any accurate knowledge of how good they'll be when they've never played first team football. My hope is we have enough players to have a team of more established players, the Hibs boys will then be a no-lose bonus. They could turn out to be brilliant, but if they're not at least it wouldn't ruin our season.

I always believe that if you sign loan players, especially season long like we've done, then they are there to improve the starting 11 or at the very least make a major impact, otherwise there is no point.

Meh. McMaster did well towards the end of last season but not sure he’s ready for the step up just yet. I hope we’re still able to bring in a stronger holding midfielder, as I’d rather not rely on McCabe and McMaster there all season. I do think he has potential, so hopefully he can develop further this season.

I'm not a fan but if we continue our 4-3-3 formation then at the moment we have McCabe, McMaster, Devenny & Aiken vying for the 3 positions. Don't now see us resigning Telfer and Frizzell as that would be an extremely lightweight midfield although Aiken is a relative unknown.

A Scott Martin type is required.

I think that's a great signing. He's not the best technically but he's a real handful as he showed every time he played against us and offers us a physical option for games when Gallagher is struggling. We will need a bit more physicality and height going up a level, so Todorov seems a good fit for that. I'm not sure he's a great fit our our style of play but McCabe was clearly getting a bit more streetwise as the season progressed and having options to change it is really important.

Agreed, much needed height added today.

Interesting comment from someone at the club on the Facebook group about lots happening behind the scenes currently.

In fairness, we have been really quick off the mark this year with the two Hibee's on board. Obviously being in the play offs left us a couple of weeks behind most others.

Some of the comments, probably the ones you pertain to on the Facebook group would most certainly be more accurate than most of the speculation that does the rounds.

Perfect…. Not that I wish Thistle any hardships like we had, but if this means they will have to tighten belts and maybe be a weaker team next season then that for me is perfect.   The difference between Championship and top flight money wise has to be absolutely massive.  If they were banking everything on the playoffs then that was foolish.  We know better than any team - unless your holding silverware above your head there’s no guarantees of promotion(even the silverware hasn’t always made things a cert)

Just shows the fine lines n football. Thistle going up to Dingwall in buoyant mood with a 2 goal lead not really contemplating losing it. Crash bang wallop and it’s another season in the championship and by the way “we’re skint”

I would definitely have preferred to have kept Smith, but I guess he thought it was his time (oh, and he's probably earning considerably more too). I don't blame Murray, in fact when he went to Raith last summer the only player he took was Easton, so at least we got promotion before he swooped in.

I will always remember Smith's goal in the first leg of the final against Hamilton, which we ultimately needed to take the tie into extra time and penalties. I thank him and wish him all the best.

Just watched his interview and he mentions the proximity to his home as a factor. Didn't mention his wage increase but I'm sure that played a part as well.

Yip, all the best Callum but of course I hope you have mare's against us next season.

  10. I'm a great one for pace at this level and for that reason alone Smith is massive loss. Each to their own of course but he was the one from our front 3 I was desperate to keep. Gallagher, I don't think can repeat last season's purple patch and I'm not convinced McGill has the ability to be a success in the championship either.

On the plus side, I don't believe Josh O'Connor is here to warm the bench and I'm sure can be better than all of them.

Oh and Ian Murray is a caant!
