  1. Preach on, brother!!! Neil Young - Like A Hurricane (original 10 minute black-Gibson-a-thon version)
  2. Woody Guthrie - Grassy Grass Grass, Grow Grow Grow
  3. Radio four's (station not band) tribute to Alistair Cooke
  4. KNBR 680 The Bay Area sports leader online.
  5. The Charlatans - Loving You Is Easy Because You're Beautiful (or somesuch twaddle). Sounding very like a bad Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young record - i.e one that was written by Stills or Nash.
  6. Sounds good to me too. But at risk of repeating myself, bands should really have to take some kind of test before they get to name their band. Death Cab for Cutie? I'd put in Elvis's version of Lonely This Christmas, because you only ever hear the Mud version.
  7. Did you ever have time to check out that Jeff Buckley vocal I suggested, Tormod? I thought you might also like to check out Emmylou Harris as well. Boulder to Birmingham is a great example of her voice.
  8. Ain't it just. I think I shall put on Tears of Rage by The Band.
  9. Belle and Sebastian - Piazza, New York Catcher To be swiftly followed by Paul Simon - Still Crazy After All These Years
  10. The Roberta Flack one is a good bet. Ultimately, for that "hair on the back of your neck thing" - I know exactly what you mean - then go for Jeff Buckley singing Hallelujah (it's a Leonard Cohen song but done differently). Its the most electric vocal performance I can think of off hand - outwith Opera obviously.
  11. In that case, Billie Holiday and, even though I'm not too keen on her work, Roberta Flack (First Time Ever I Saw Your Face).
  12. Funnily enough, I've just been making up a CD of 4AD groups and artists. Some recent Tanya Donnelly here, a little This Mortal Coil there, all spliced with some Pixies, some Belly and a whole bunch of Cocteau Twins songs.
  13. Do you mean in terms of range? Jeff Buckley for one.
  14. Johnny Cash - Southern Accents. It's a Tom Petty song originally, I think, but wow, you couldn't tell from listening. Johnny Cash did nothing wrong, ever, officially.
  15. Actually, I should point out there's another of the Guardian's consistently excellent FCD series free into today's paper. We can ignore Paul Weller's ill conceived take on Dylan's All Along the Watchtower, but there's some top tunes. Now playing - The Delgados: I Fought The Angels.
  16. May god have mercy on your soul... The music polis would like to offer you free, voluntary counseling at one of our centres throughout the UK. You understand that you are under no obligation to attend, but we feel it would be to your benefit as well as society's. Mariah Carey is a crime against humanity, you have the power, Tormod, to help stamp it out and save generations of kids. A bit like Yellow Fever. Trashcan Sinatras - Weightlifting.
  17. Them or Delays (Hughsie, I'm looking particularly at you.... ). Frank Black - Everything is New.
  18. "Got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack/I went out for a ride and I never went back" Best opening line to a song ever? I think so. David Byrne - Un di Felice, Etera.
