Excuse the double post above but Uganda and other nations have attempted to instate the death penalty for Christians while wide parts of the west within living memory either criminalised the LGBT community or went further while places like the US have operated or continue to still operate conversion camps and therapy. There's plenty of indicators, particularly the further you go into the community (trans and other groups) that face real discrimination, physical assaults and even murder in the west while being denied basic amenities such as bathroom access. I think my point is that so far most of the things said by the people that knew the perpetrator have downplayed any religious role which maybe makes right wing commentators within the US more uncomfortable as it would force them to look at their own group if this attack was committed by what it could well have been. A rabid right wing gun fanatic.
