  1. Help! After the PfS ride I had to get my hub replaced under warranty cos it was shot. The shop fixed it promptly and with no fuss, but when I was wheeling the bike to the car I thought the hub looked a little odd, but couldn't quite place what was wrong.

I've just been out on it and spotted that the inner sleeve (arrowed in the pic below) was unscrewing itself and the whole spindle was shoogling by an alarming amount.

Should there be a cover over the bearings to prevent dirt & grit getting in?

The other pic shows how the entire hub is generating about 4mm movement at the freewheel.

Should this go back to the shop?

  2. Nah, I'm just not getting it. I ride for the fun of it and to keep fit. There's no fun in getting blown all over the road, soaked and/or frozen to the bone. If I were commuting - maybe. For fitness, I'm thinking of heading back to the gym for the winter. I'll take the bike out on those cold, crisp, dry days of winter perhaps.

  3. I have to say that when I can't use the bike for even a few days now, I actually think I get a bit depressed. In all seriousness.

I've noticed this pattern emerging over the course of 18 months or so, and it cannot be based on coincidence.

I'm a strong believer in the theory that being (and staying) physically fit enhances your mental health - I can't see past this, in fact.

Aye, that's the endorphins that are released during exercise. They're the things that make you feel great after a good run, but your body gets almost addicted to them. It's why body builders go to ridiculous lengths. When I was hitting the gym I went every second day for a good 2 hour session. If I missed a session I felt guilty, if I missed 2 I got depressed.

That's what makes the cycling lark addictive. If you suddenly take up regular exercise, your body isn't used to the endorphin rush and it craves more, which can only be satisfied by more exercise.

  4. Aye, I was out for the first time since PFS today. Didn't really have a route in mind so I just pootled around for 30-odd miles. I'm not originally from this area so the backroads are a mystery to me and it's nice to sometimes take a turn "Just to see where it goes". To that end, I feel a wee bit limited on the road bike cos I'll not risk it on the rougher tracks.

  5. Jeez-o this cycling lark could be dear.

Bikes cost as much as my first car. First thing you're supposed to do is take off the pedals and buy a pair of spds, which of course means you've got to buy special shoes to fit the pedals. Then you've got to cough up for a mutant turtle hat, shorts so tight people can see if you're circumcised, boots for the shoes in case they get wet, swanky jackets, detachable sleeves (wot?) etc etc etc Now folk are talking about getting extra bikes in case the first ones don't like the cold or something.

I'm a skinflint - the one you'll see in the duffel coat biggrin.gif

  6. A few weeks ago I went into the shop to see if I could find something for my new grandson. I was hoping to find a wee Falkirk top or something and was disappointed to find nothing suitable.

So hats off to the Manageress (?) who promised to get something in before the Dundee game. Today I bought a wee bib with the Falkirk crest on biggrin.gif I'm told she'd made it herself at home so thank you, thank you very much. It's just a wee thing but it means a lot and that's the wee sod "claimed" now biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Seriously, thank you to the Retail Team.

  7. Just got The Sun and my time was officially 6hrs 15mins and 53secs which made me 165th out of 900 which I am well chuffed with. :D

What I also found bizarre was that one guy doing the Challenge Ride trying to fly through the crowds coming off CN1 onto the main road into Murrayfield as he obviously wanted to do a quick time. He nearly took out a group of 50 or so riders!! If you are looking to do times do the Sportive Route ya clown.

    Congratulations!!!

I take it just the Sportive riders are listed?

  8. I had intended stopping at Linlithgow, but I had a tractor right behind me when I reached the steward and I couldn't hear what he said or make out his waving arms so I kept going. It made the bit between Linlithgow & Kirkliston really slow as my legs had gone. A 5 minute stop and a bar of choc at Kirkliston really made a difference though.

It's all part of the learning process I suppose.
