But at least they’ve cancelled the test prior to returning.

Apparently, the delay on day2 is down to shortage of antigen testing capacity. Companies should be up to speed in a few weeks.

    https://www.ttgmedia.com/news/shapps-half-term-switch-from-pcr-testing-in-the-balance-30574?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Midday Bulletin

The transport secretary said test providers had been focused on PCR and were not ready for mass lateral flow testing.

Shapps was answering questions from parliament’s transport committee. Committee member Ben Bradshaw said the government was putting travel’s half-term reboot in danger.

“Why wait until possibly the end of October to switch from PCR to lateral flow tests?” Bradshaw asked. “It is exactly the same companies that provide the Day 2 PCR tests as provide lateral flow tests.

“They could provide them now if you just changed the rules now, so why are you potentially jeopardising the very important half-term for the industry which would be a lifesaver for many companies and dragging your feet on this?”

Shapps said the matter was one for the Department for Health and Social Care, which understood the importance of the issue to the travel industry, but added:

“My understanding is the ramp up of supply of lateral flow through the private testing sector has some way to go, in as much as they have been almost entirely involved in providing PCRs currently.

“I think it’s just a question of scale, we’re going from a situation where they probably provide the low number of thousands to probably millions of tests very quickly and they need a few weeks to scale up on it.”

Shapps also said he would not step in to regulate prices charged by test companies.

“I’m a believer in the market, that competition drives prices down. I hope we see lateral flow tests for much more reasonable prices,” he said.

Technical changes were also required to Passenger Locator Forms before lateral flow tests could be accepted for travel.

“The sooner this can happen the better,” Shapps said.

I'm going on holiday next month as well, it would be good to know. Still waiting for Portugal to make up its mind on accepting UK proof of vaccine too to avoid a pre flight test on this end.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel on that.

We already have over 90% of adults vaxxed. Quite remarkable uptake that not many would have forseen a year ago. Those who are left will never be convinced.

    I'm not sure about that.

I think a lot of people probably will take the vaccines after passports are introduced.

On a point of principle though, forcing medicine into people who don't want it by denying them access to parts of society is not the behaviour of a civilised country.

I can use the example of my bosses 2 daughters, both uni graduates who are both vaccine hesitant (In part as one of their relatives posts anti vaccine stuff on social media)

Both in the last 4 months have caught covid causing the office to close as we enter through their family home.

Both still showed no sign of getting a vaccination and one said as ive had it i wont get it again.

Its only now due to our vaccine passport and more importantly for them the French rules which will effect them on the family ski holiday that they have finally decided its time to step forward.

The whole international travel thing could tip a few more undecided into getting it.

I would say Dundee's stand, visually at least, is the most unaltered from the original Archibald Leitch design.  The old main stand at Tynecastle served the club for just over 100 years.  I think the main stand at Somerset Park and the remaining half of the original main stand at Central Park date from 1921 and are still in use today.

Having sat in the stand last night legs were certainly shorter 100 years ago

its such a pity the enclosure in front of it was removed in part as it spoils the look on TV.

Sell the ground at Mount Florida. It is a valuable piece of land in a largely residential area so flats etc would be built there. Keep Lesser Hamdpen there. Move the Main Stand bit by bit to one of the many brown field sights along the Clyde, within walking distance of the town - maybe before or just after Partick Harbour. Build a new stadium around the Main Stand, with stands closer to the park etc etc.

I advocated that years ago and think it still stands as one of my better ideas!

Its not valuable for the next 20 years at least, that's why Queens Park sold it to the SFA for 5.1 million last year.

If you stop using it as a sports stadium at any point before 2040 there are so many grants that need paid back it knocked about 20 to 25 million of the value of the land, which the SFA tried to buy for £1.

    https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/queens-park-claim-sfa-tried-13280645

Then there is the 5 million they would need to pay the debenture holders (some of whom as McAlpine's from the last rebuild who covered some of the debt into debenture when the cash ran out for the South stand)  https://www.constructionnews.co.uk/archive/mcalpine-in-play-off-tickets-row-04-11-1999/

ignoring the first part then on Lessor Hampden, well Queens Park now own that so they will be glad you are letting them stay, especially with work restarting soon on their redevelopment of the ground.

It's a disgrace that there is gap of 30,000 seats between Scotland's 4th biggest stadium (Ibrox) and it's 5th biggest (Pittodrie)

That combined with the fact that three of the top four are within a few miles of each other and the other is a rugby ground mean we have a mountain to climb if we ever want to host a tournament even on a shared basis with other UK nations.

We absolutely NEED a 30k-35k seat stadium in Scotland. It would be perfect for cup semi finals between (say) Hearts and Motherwell who are never filling Hampden but could have a medium sized ground absolutely rocking. Would also be perfect for international friendlies and lower profile qualifiers.

We would be better developing Hampden with facilities that can be split

BC place in Vancouver is around Hampden Park capacity but for the MLS looks full but its only a one tier venue

That's the trouble with Scotland though, we tend to slag everything off and put it down, isn't really the way to promote our game. Just look at England with their best league in the world pish, and Harry Kane the world's best striker shite, yet it gets them big money deals and promotes their product to f**k. Some of their Premiership games are total garbage too, you wont hear them saying that though.

A perfect example of this from yesterday.

Israel's coach Willi Ruttensteiner first game in charge was the draw at Hampden in the UEFA Nations League. Where in Israel's form since then does the confidence come from that we should be beating them? It's mental, there is overwhelming evidence across the board that this will be an even game.

looking at those results , especially the last 2 away from home to higher ranked opposition there is a frailty in that team. When was our last 4-0 or 5-0 loss?

I'm not saying we will win by 4 or 5 but get an early goal and we should win this.

  9. My ideal solution would involve taking the whole roof off and doing the following to try and get to around 70,000 seats.

    • Bring the pitch closer to the existing South stand, creating room on the North side.
    • Adding a 3rd tier on the South stand, a basic bolt on to the back of the existing facilities , with some boxes put in at the top of the second tier (debenture level).
    • East and West stands demolished and brought close to the pitch, large double tiered ends built so that the stadium can be made smaller for certain semi finals but still look good on tv
    • North stand demolished and replaced with a single tier stand close to the pitch with a large number of boxes above it to keep the roof in line with the ends.

I really do wonder if the outcome will be, 1) make the league bigger, 2) get a better TV deal and 3) something vague about streaming or maximising merchandise income.

For part 1 it could be make it smaller

Part 3 could be to follow an MLS format with every kit made by the same manufacturer , all club shops selling the similar products .

Genuinely curious, for the people that want the league to be extended to 16/18.

Assuming we play eachother twice that would reduce the amount of league games we play to either 30 or 34 games.

How do you plan for clubs to sign up to that? It would reduce the money coming in as it would be less gate money from less games, less derbies and all that comes along with that.

I’m not knocking the idea but I’m just not sure how it makes sense for any club from a financial perspective, other than for the 4 clubs that would be promoted as a result.

Forgetting the second visit from one of the OF that is guaranteed under the current system , clubs would be cutting a second visit for a large support for a smaller number.

Taking Dundee as the example they would cut post split second visits from St Mirren, Ross County, Livingston, Hibs , Rangers and Aberdeen and replace them with ICT, Kilmarnock, Arboath, Partick Thistle, Queen of the South and Raith Rovers going by the current championship table. At a guess Hibs or Aberdeen could bring as many fans as a combination of 3 of the team above so there would be a loss of revenue to them. However there would be a bigger spread of those away attendances over more teams so if they are looking out of the greater good a larger league may be a positive thing.

I think calling it that is a bit fanciful for now considering a non glasgow club has made it to the actual proper competition for what about 15 years now? Although with the third European competition that could change.

The third competition in effect opens up a total of 8 extra places for non champions from a total of 55 members.

While we are at the top of our current coefficient cycle (we will go down in a few years) we will have 1 of those places next season but its not the large number of extra spots everyone thought it might be as the aim is to give champions group stage football.

Interesting to read that a remodelling similar to Stuttgart is being considered....

Did they ever do anything with the roof at Stuttgart.

Looking at the overhead from Hampden rebuilding without a roof will leave a large number of seats very exposed to the weather.

There has to be a better solution than that.

  14. Not that much movement in the 2nd place ranking table after last nights games

Poland drop to 3rd so are replaced by Albania who only have 6 points on the system

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_–_UEFA_Second_Round

Still lots can changed (teams in second and those that the big groups drop points against) but we have on this system played 5 games where as most of the teams currently second have played 4.

Getting 6 points next month could put us in a great position as its now likely the Moldova games wont count for this table.

  15. 1 hour ago, Donathan said:

Clearly, last night’s result puts us in good position to finish second. Israel are likely our main challengers now, with Austria having a disastrous 2 results this week.

    AFAIK,

3 wins (Israel H, Faroes and Moldova A) gets us second

If we draw with Israel and beat the minnows, Israel finish above is if they win in Austria. If they draw in Austria it’ll come down to GD, if they lose in Austria then 7 points will be enough.

Austria cannot finish above us unless they beat Denmark or we drop something to one of the minnows.

If we do make the playoffs, as things stand we’d need to beat two of:

    Serbia

    Russia

    Sweden

    Poland

    Switzerland

    Czech Republic

    Norway

    Armenia

    Ukraine

    Wales*

    Austria*

    * Through UNL.

We need to be a top 6 second place team to get a home semi final, so a point against Denmark and beating Israel at home would be very helpful. It would also be helpful to get decent wins in the away games in case it comes down to GD (albeit the Moldova game will not count)

With regard to the ranking of the 2nd place teams this is how i see it today, the dropping of points for groups F to J and the uneven fixtures in groups A to E don't make it straight forward to look at but we are doing ok.

    • Serbia 11 points from 5 games - goal difference 12-7
    • Russia 10 points from 5 games - goal difference 8-4
    • Sweden 9 points from 3 games - Goal difference 6-1
    • Scotland 8 points from 5 games - goal difference 8-5
    • Poland 7 points from 4 games - goal difference 11-6
    • Switzerland 7 points from 3 games - goal difference 4-1
    • Czech Republic 7 points from 5 games - goal difference 8-7
    • Norway 7 points from 4 games - goal difference 4-4
    • Armenia 7 points from 4 games - goal difference 5-8
    • Ukraine 5 points from 5 games - goal difference 6-6

I suppose this would be a bit like if Cardiff or Swansea were forced to play in the Welsh league this season.

Hopefully they will be one day.

There should be a choice, if you want a national team then all your club sides should play in your national league. No exceptions.

  17. George Best and Mary Stavin in Scone after George Best had played for Scone Thistle, my grandfather was the photographer for the local paper and was tipped off exactly where to find them. I do have the autographs somewhere and the picture periodically turns up on twitter.

William and Kate in 2014 as we were invited to take some kids from the BB to meet them in Crieff. They were both genuine and asked good questions. One of our boys aged 9 however told the local paper Kate's hair smelt nice which was not published.

In my role at Saints ive met loads of people from the football world, most of whom are totally sound. I remember watching a game from the TV gantry and Gary McAllister took the piss as i thought Saints had scored a late winner v Celtic but he was sound and it was all good banter.

Fatih Terim looking me in the eye and waving going to the press conference last month was odd as we have never met before.

Not sure this counts as an "I've met" but i was waiting on a flight arrival in Geneva to fill our mini bus and Mike Tyson walked passed. it was a genuine what is he doing here, was it him moment . The next day the local paper reported he was in the area skiing.

I noticed they'd been slowly working their way through the qualifying rounds.

Did I miss something, or are they still part-time uber-diddies? Tremendous achievement, if so.

They are one of the beneficiaries of the system that aims to get a minimum of 34 of the National champions into the group stages of one of the 3 competitions. its a great idea and will spread the number of nations with teams in the groups out (In the end its 36 this year)

They started in the Champions League , won one tie against Fola Esch 7-2 on aggregate (A superb result) .Even Fola Esch ended up in this play off round so if you are a champion of a small league its very difficult not to get 8 games in July and August.

In round 2 they played Cluj losing both games so dropped to the Europa league.

They then lost 4-2 on aggregate to Slovan Bratislava to drop into the Conference playoffs and hit the jackpot in the unseeded draw where they got Riga FC. Both games finished 1-1 and they came out on top in extra time. They could have got the likes of Kairat Almaty or Maccabi Haifa in that draw.

Thus with 1 win over 90 minuets in the first round of the Champions league and 4 draws they have group stage football. Hibs and Aberdeen both won more games and don't but that's the way the system works.

Always a tall order going to Muirton but they had played Albion Rovers on the Wednesday night.

There was a day when I would never miss a Welfare game in the Cup, I'd avoid booking holidays etc. Can't see them winning this, so they'd be out of the Cup before end of August for the first time in their history. Probably take in Lithgae v Banks.

Are Jeanfield likely to issue a programme for this?

Ive not missed a St Johnstone Scottish cup tie since 1986 so that Welfare game is part of my run. Last seasons semi final at Hampden was the 100th game in a row (it helps being on the media team)

I would doubt there would be a programme, ive certainly not seen one at Jeanfield yet.

Took in the Letham v DNE game DNE ran out 6-2 winners. Not sure if letham were missing players on not but the letham team looked very young the keeper looked about 12 and most of the back line the same.

Tonight was very much about men v boys.

Once North End took the lead they were never letting that go last night.

The Keeper has gone from playing under 19s in the Covid disrupted season to the midlands league but did make a few good saves.

It will take Letham a few years to adjust to this level.

He's looking after set-pieces, not doing the pre/post-match presser or picking the team. Much like Cathro, McPhee has an excellent reputation as a coach, their performance as a manager isn't really relevant.

As long as they are not looking at him as the long term replacement for Clarke as we used to do in the days of Roxburgh and Brown, i'm happy with that.

Technically he could also be good for the youth set up.

I guess we may be using some of our income from the Euros to bring him onto the Scotland set up as were NI not able to offer better wages than we could a few years ago.
