  1. Another from my 12” vinyl collection. A thumping chorus and further proof that adding trumpets elevates a song (Just ask Mark Ronson). No. 21 in 1985.
  2. I still refuse to listen to Radio 2 on the basis that it’s for “old people”, but some of my Sunday morning choices wouldn’t seem out of place there. Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On? Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
  3. This is what happens when you use the What3Words conception address as the child’s name.
  4. Shortly after my parents bought their matrimonial home in the 1960s, the council built 5 new houses on a plot of land along the road. Rather than introducing a new street name or using suffix letters, the council simply chose to renumber the houses. My parents fell asleep one night in No. 21 and woke up the next morning in No. 31. The resulting chaos with bank accounts and land registry entries was still causing them problems 40 years later. To complicate the street even more, there’s no No. 13. Instead the houses are numbered 11, 11A, 15.
  5. Someone has our backs... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-56417544
  6. Fair do’s. The Athletic article is behind a paywall and, whilst I enjoy the podcasts, I don’t think I’d get my money’s worth from a subscription. I’ve been listening to the Totally Football podcast from the start, having followed James Richardson from the Guardian one. I remember the adverts for Football Index and having a quick look at their setup out of curiosity. Quickly decided it wasn’t for me.
  7. “advertised everywhere”, including the Totally Football Podcast from The Athletic. https://www.globalplayer.com/podcasts/episodes/3yyamS/ They’re really not entitled to any moral high ground here.
  8. You’ve obviously taken what she has said to heart and accepted your share of responsibilities in the water fetching department. That will either be 1. Her immediate impression on what your statistics represent or 2. Your defence when she loses her shit and asks you why on earth you’ve collected these statistics.
  9. Not a new customer and have placed many bets. Tried logging out and in to no effect. Will see what happens when the other free bets are released over the next few days and raise it with customer services if there’s still an issue. There’s also supposed to be an upcoming risk free £5 betbuilder on Wednesday’s Chelsea v Atletico Madrid game. Use Free Bet Balance option has now appeared and bet successfully placed.
  10. Not getting a free bet box, despite the claimed £5 showing in my account. Have tried on both my mobile and my laptop.
  11. Bump! Curiously, I claimed the first one for the 13.20 on Tuesday and selected a winner in the appropriate race but the option to “use free bets” is not appearing on my bet slip. Am I missing something in the T&Cs?
  12. Probably been mentioned before as I also experience it with work colleagues... Turns up the thermostat or car heater to 28C (no windows open) on the hypothesis that the house or car will warm up faster. There’s always the promise that it will get turned down later, regularly forgotten. Apparently, her mother has a similar strategy for the oven, always turning it on at 250C then turning it down to the required cooking temperature once it hits 250C.
  13. My experience is more through age than expertise. I’m currently riding a Pinnacle Neon 1 Hybrid bicycle with upgraded saddle, brake pads and tyres. Hopefully my pros and cons might be useful considerations for someone. Things I like about it: It’s got rim brakes, a single chainring and no suspension making it relatively light. The 8 gears give me enough range for my needs and I don’t have to worry about cross-chaining. The rim brakes and single chainring also make it easier to maintain. The flat handlebar makes it more stable than bikes with drop handlebars. The lower price (under £350) means it’s automatically covered on my home insurance. I can happily go out on it for 2hr road rides, but it doesn’t look out of place when accompanying Funky Junior on his MTB along the Water of Leith. Downsides: The flat handlebar reduces your hand placement options which can become uncomfortable on longer rides. On anything more challenging than a forest path, the lack of suspension leads to sore wrists and knees. Evans Cycles has now been taken over by Sports Direct and their customer support has suffered as a result. If you’re looking for second hand bikes in Edinburgh, I can recommend Soul Cycles near Tollcross.
  14. Easier to view the spec of what you’re getting here. https://www.cyclobikessg.com/hybrid/p/sunspeed-kepler I was told in the 90s to walk away if the components aren’t Shimano or Campagnolo. Don’t know whether that’s still the case, but all the recognised brands in the UK seem to stick with those options.
  15. “... a welsh sheep farm (looks at camera) DON’T! ...” I was laughing so much I missed the rest of the answer.
  16. There! Happy now? Anyway, to push myself on I decided to join a suitable Strava challenge to cycle 400km in March. I’ve been out every other day so far and checked my progress after this morning’s ride. I’m currently in position 129,181 with 145km. Everyone in the top 10 is over 1,000km and the leader is claiming an impressive 10,366km in 7 days. If that’s your level of cycling, why would you join a challenge to cycle 400km in a month?
  17. On Sky Documentaries Sunday at 9.00 and Thursday at 11.00. Another recommendation... The Soul of America John Meacham explains that everything you thought was a new low for America under Trump was pretty much just history repeating itself. (Sky Docs - Tuesday 11.00)
  18. It would appear that you’re not really chef material unless your food has seen the oven or a hob, regardless of how good your flavour combinations are. Admittedly, Ross stretched his luck by trying it twice, but some of my favourite restaurant meals haven’t involved applying any form of heat to the food.
  19. Same again for Sunday’s Manchester derby.
  20. Depending on whether your grandson is under 13 or not, either don’t get him Strava or go for the free version initially.
  21. I use the free version which gives me distance, elevation, moving and elapsed time, and average and maximum speed. I also get a map and speed and elevation graphs.
  22. I’m over 50 with a swimmer’s build, riding an 8 gear, single chainring, £300 hybrid bicycle. I’m never going to get a KOM, so I’ll take any accolades going.
  23. Strava is celebrating my achievement of covering the Johnsburn Rd to Haughhead Rd stretch in Balerno more often than anyone else in the last 90 days. Or, put another way, I’ve wimped out of a particular stretch of the A70 more often than anyone else. I suspect they’re trying to massage my ego to coax me into paying for extra app features. They’ll have to try harder.
