  1. Interesting listening to tms at the end of play. All commentators saying they think eng have the edge despite the stats suggesting sa are slightly shading a win 41% to 40%.

The stats are used by eng mgmt apparently and gathered over history. I guess.like duckworth Lewis is.

I always go with runs on the board in this situation and above that batting fourth might be a mistake for sa

  2. Well. I got that wrong. Taylor and Buttler overcame a tough period from the Pakistani spinners to eventually cruise to a good victory.

Many an England ODI team has collapsed from that position when 4 down.

I thought England let Pakistan get too many with the bat in the end even though it was still a score to take before a ball was bowled.

No reason now not to press on and win the series as Pakistan have a crap record in the UAE

  3. Ali showing loose technique against the new ball once again. My 11 for the next test is

    Cook

Hales (in the absence of anyone else)

    Taylor

    Root

    Stokes

    Ali

    Bairstow

    Rashid

    Broad

    Wood

    Anderson

Stokes Ali and Bairstow could interchange if need be. Bell is finished and England took away a strength when they moved Ali. Butler giving way to Bairstow retains the multiple bowling options England are seeking

  4. I have to laugh at that. I don't really rate either Smith or Warner as long term test batsmen. They have nobody else to pick though so unless they start skittling teams I don't see how aus are going to get anywhere anytime soon. Shame. Not.

  5. There was never any doubt aus would bat again. Modern run rates pretty much negate the need to enforce follow ons. Aus in the field for 90 odd overs. More than two full days to play. No brainer to bat again for a bit. By the time they declare tomorrow either in time to bowl before lunch or even just after they will be 500ish ahead again. Not many teams bat 120 overs to save a game never mind 150 overs.

Having said that I still go back to this being a road and remember Sri Lanka betting 500 odd to save a test at Lords a few years ago.

Needs some top order guts and not sure England don't have three walking wickets in the top 5

  6. I personally think there are not enough Cooks in the game these days. There are plenty tests like this one where you need to defend a monster score with more than 3 days to play where batting time is more effective than 4 an over.

Made my mind up that Lythe is not the answer at the moment. Have not paid enough attention to county cricket the last two seasons to suggest someone different though.

Often Lords gets even flatter over the second half of the game so this game is not guaranteed to be a convict win

This is where I am coming from. They can bat time and still accumulate enough runs by waiting for loose deliveries. There would be enough over two full days for Atherton to get that many. And Cardiff has proved a few times you can stick in if you are not pushing the boat out over previous ashes matches.

Aus dont have that kind of lineup though so either it's an 80s west indies type rape for one or two or England chip away at a win tomorrow evening.

Anyway. When did McGrath think anything other than an Aus win in every single match ever.

Chances are...the usual. There will be a tough partnership to break at some point but runs on the board will prevail. And that will make it a better series in the long run than any other result.
