You're right. Indeed, I was looking at the points table incorrectly.
But for me, the principle is that the team that produced the winning car should come away with the most points. @IainMorton is right that it's a bit better than the old system, but I liked the one before that (10, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1). Winning a point was a huge deal in those days. Now the top 10 get points and there was a proper gap between winning and being runner up.
