Rumours that he has signed a significant number of these players without ever seeing them are starting to ring true looking at them and comparing them to his other signings from January. If that is the case the scout is obviously fucking blind and he has really let hartley down with some of the signings but to put that much faith in someone else's opinions of players is mental.

That question was asked at a Bairns Business Club meeting with the manager in the last couple of months. The managers response was that there had to be an element of trust in the Head Of Recruitment, after which he went into detail about the guy's background. The questioner didn't push it so there was no further detail as to whether the manager had made a final check by watching the players in the flesh, reviewed videos, taken them on trial, sought opinions from other trusted sources etc. He could have done all or none of those.

I imagine someone will raise it again at whatever the next open forum is.

Examples such as telling the players in November last year who’s staying and going meaning that some players downed tools

At the end of the season the players were told on the Thursday before the final league game if they were being released. I know because I was in the club that day, and was in the following day and shook hands with some of them as they said their goodbyes to the staff. None of them knew beforehand that they were going. Not unless they, and various staff members I spoke to in the preceding days, were lying to me.

I'm not quite so sure about the departures in the January window. However, I had a long conversation with Fash two days after Christmas at the Junior Bairns Day and he didn't seem to have any idea that he was going to be released within the week. There was a also a conversation reported by fans on social media in which Balatoni was heard bemoaning in Reception that his contract was up tomorrow and he had no idea what was happening. And the reported conversations with Miller & Kerr on Christmas Eve in which they were told their time was up.

For those reasons I find it very, very unlikely that players were told in November.

Can I ask what your basis is for making such a claim?

I agree to a certain extent and that's why I said I really don't see the point in the interviews.  Same questions every weeks receiving the same answers.  Could he not even be asked what his thinking is behind playing 4 centrehalf's at the back so that the rest of us can perhaps get some clue of what his ideas are. Doesnt have to be seen as criticism in that way.

No idea. The guy who does the questioning is fairly well known amongst the Falkirk support; if you feel strongly about it why not contact him via social media to ask?

It might even give him a line to probe a little deeper. "Hey gaffer, we've been contacted by various fans who would like us to inquire about...…"

In general, all these sort of interviews tend to be pretty bland. They're worth doing for the occasional nugget though. My alltime favourite remains Gary Holt's rant after Phil Roberts got sent off at Alloa.

I really dont see the point in these interviews anyway. Never ask any interesting questions like why nae full backs. Who on earth thought it would be a good idea to sign mackin, sammut or TOE and have you any idea what your actually doing Paul?

Sometimes managers can be a little bit tetchy of anything they perceive as criticism. That particularly applies to "in house" media; I know of a few instances over the years where a variety of managers have taken exception to comments made during match commentaries which the average fan wouldn't think twice about making. One former FFC TV commentator was notorious for it. Note the use of the word "former".

If a TV interviewer asked your last two questions of any manager it's unlikely he'd get a civil answer. Or the chance to do another interview with that manager again.

There are plenty of examples on youtube of managers having a real go at the press during interviews. And those  are professional interviewers with an audience of thousands, not an unpaid fan who could be kicked out his role if the manager thought he was being cheeky. And if there was a "disagreement" over the questioning, the interview would probably never see the light of day anyway.

It's not a role I'd want to do. Damned if you ask and damned if you don't.

He's signed for Edinburgh City.  Best of luck to him, he's found his level.

He can't have. EdiBairn previously told us we would all be surprised where he ended up and that's hardly a surprise to anyone.

If fairness to EBs comments earlier (don't know how to multiquote) I think he WILL have a successful career, depending on how you define success. He's good enough to play football at a lower level for a number of years. I see him as being akin to another of our ex-youth strikers, Andy Rodgers.

I don't think there's any danger he will bypass Falkirk. Not unless he suddenly develops attributes that he hasn't shown during his time with us. And I say that from the perspective of having seen virtually every game he played for Falkirk.

Good luck Scotty. I hope things work out for you.

The fans always get their way in the end. If they want Hartley out after the next defeat the Board ignore that at their pearl.

If they did ignore it the venom would head in their direction. On the basis they want an easy life he will be hunted.

Do you remember the fans meeting with Martin Ritchie after the news broke about HMRC? Multiple fans stood up, were given the microphone and told him that the support didn't want Pressley as a manager. Every speaker who made that point  got a roar of approval from the hundreds of folk who had turned up.

It made not one blind bit of difference. The board ignored them. And Pressley stayed for as long as he wanted to.

Ignoring fans isn't hard, particularly now that the season ticket monies are in.

Ignoring sponsors, corporate business etc is harder. Once you get three men and a dog in hospitality, as there was for a few games last season, then the alarm bells may start to ring.

  7. We're played six competitive games.

In five of those games, we've conceded in the first half. We should have conceded in the sixth one but Forfar missed a penalty and hit the woodwork twice.

Virtually every one of those first halves saw a poor performance which often saw the team jeered off the pitch.

Nobody has scored against us in a second half. Every goal we're scored this season has come in a second half. Every decent performance we've put in has been during a second half.

    Hmmn.

I'm guessing there must be players leaving on top of Harris, Mckee and Shepherd if we're bringing in another forward.

O'Hara would seem the obvious candidate as I doubt Hartley'll want 6 strikers.

It's not impossible some players will go out on loan over and above the three who're very clearly not wanted.

Just seems bizarre that he played fairly often last season and got more game time than players Hartley himself brought in like Blair and Welsh, but all of a sudden he's nowhere to be seen.

Unless there is a valid reason for it; a reason which isn't the manager falling out with the player.

These sort of things tend to come out in the end. Let's wait and see what gets said over the coming weeks before jumping to conclusions. Possibly BPM can do some digging and explain it for you.

    Lucas Williamson at Rangers
    Kerr Robertson at Rangers
    Jack Hodge at Hibs
Dominic Lavell at St.Mirren (was with Falkirk from 9 and is from Clydebank
    Kenzie Nair at Hearts
    Adam Laidlaw at Hearts

    Hearts took around 6 players, St.Johnstone 12.

That enough for your tracker? emoji6.png

Cheers BPM. All have been noted.

James Maxwell looked a cracking player when he came on against Dundee Utd at Glebe Park. There was definitely potential there. His dad used to be the head honcho at the Inchyra and was an Ayr fan. Nice bloke too.

Jack Hodge came along to U20 matches once or twice but I don't think he ever got any game time.

Dominic Lavelle was another one who was part of the squad a few times. He played up at Fraserburgh against Aberdeen. I mind thinking he didn't look out of place, which for a debut appearance against one of the best teams in the country suggested he had potential.

None of the other names are familiar to me.

Having watched them on a semi regular basis there was some excellent players in the under 17s and our under 15's side was rated as the best in Scotland for that age group. Lets not kid ourselves that there wasn't talent coming through.  Rangers pinched a number of our youngsters as did St Mirren and other clubs. Will be interesting to see how many of them are perhaps up against us in future seasons and its a case of what may have been.

    Any names Shodwall?

I didn't attend FVFA games so I don't know anything about the U15 and U17 sides. However, there were a few boys who were sometimes promoted into our U20s to either make up the numbers, or get a taster of a higher level. None of them stood out for me. I don't recall any getting into Scotland U17 teams for quite some time either.

That's not a dig; I simply don't know enough about that level to comment on their potential.

However, there have been a few folk online since the academy closed, like yourself, telling us how good the kids we discarded were. I'm really curious to see who they were and how they turn out. If one of them signs for the Old  Firm and turns out to be the next big thing them I'm sure  there will be a number of "told you so" posts from those were involved with the academy.

Who should we be looking out for?

It's a very small squad. I don't think some people realise the non first team guys that have left. Kinda why I chuckle when people say stuff like "why have we signed another midfielder/target man?" because quite simply there isn't anyone left in the reserves apart from rookies and outcasts.

Just noticed, is @Bainsfordbairn a Star Trek fan? Just asking as all the old youth/reserve players seem to be in red shirts? "Send the rookies down to the planet, etc"

We have eight youth players at the moment. Five who came through the ranks at FVFA a year ago, Mutch & Laverty who were recruited last summer and Young who came in this summer. When the Reserve League starts they'll be supplemented by first teamers who didn't play on the Saturday.

Not sure about the strips. So far they've played in both last years home and away strips and this years away. Might just be a case of what's available on the day.

You only have to look at the size of squad to know that our budget is pretty substantial this season. We've got a squad of nearly 30 players .Players arent going to relocate  from down south for peanuts  . I would be amazed if the budget Hartley has isnt about the biggest after  the first season we came down.

If you look at the size of the squad you'll see that it's not actually that much different from last season.

Out since May - 14 senior pros, or non-youth players. (Thomson, Grant, Taiwo, Watson, Tumilty, Hazard, Blair, Nelson, Jakubiak, Longridge, Welsh, Sibbald, Loy & Blues.

In since May - 15 senior pros. Can't be bothered listing them as I shouldn't need to.

The main difference is in the amount of youth / reserve players. Six departed and only one has come in.

This years squad is smaller. And that's before you take into account the three whom we'd presumably like to get off the books.

There's also now strong rumours emanating from the club that Hartley and Sammut have fallen out.

If there were strong rumours (note the plural) they would have been heard and repeated by multiple people on multiple forums. Yet it seems you're the only person who's aware of them.

I find it bizarre that he might be playing reserve games for hearts as well unless he's not expected to feature much for us?

I am sure if he can find his way into our team Levein will be happy enough to leave him to it. If he goes weeks without any appearances though its in Hearts and our best interests that he plays football.

Beat me to it ya bugger!

O Hara and Shepherd often played in our U20s when they were on loan elsewhere. I think it's a fairly standard arrangement amongst clubs.

The fact that he's available for reserve duty with Hearts doesn't mean that he'll be playing every week though. Reserve league games will be on a Monday this year, so I doubt he'd play for them two days after playing for our first team. I suspect the coaching staff at both clubs will be talking regularly to make sure he's looked after and not burned out.

Don’t think people are questioning the signing per say just that we are really lacking in experience and this lad does not give us that.

I suppose it depends on exactly what Hartley's looking for.

I had a wee look at the ages of our first team squad - all are in their twenties apart from Paton, Irving and O' Hara. And Kev will be 20 in less than a fortnight.

You're right in that most of our summer recruits don't have a lot of experience though.

The players that do come into the "Houston-type journeymen that many fans don't like" category - Kidd at 24, McKee at 25, Aero at 27, and Froxy at 25. I guess decent experienced players might be outwith our wage bracket, which means either bringing in more Tom Taiwos / Paul Watsons / Sean Welshes or spending big money on a Rory Loy.

Given that a lack of experience didn't seem to hinder Robson, Nelson or Jakubiak I'm hopeful the same will happen here.

As you said, time will tell.

Would you be quite happy to rip up your contract at work for free? No, you wouldn't. So why should Harris, Shepherd or anyone else?

There have been numerous examples over the years of unwanted players being asked to accept a settlement which is less than their full contract value. They'll l often take it, either for the chance to get out and start again, or because they can get another deal elsewhere where the value of the new contract and previous settlement is greater than what they were on before. Or is for a longer duration.

As we don't know what they were on at FFC, what they've been offered to leave or what's on offer elsewhere, it's not really fair to criticise the players. So I'm on your side with that one.

However, I'd be very surprised if they'd been asked to "rip up their contract for free". I don't believe that's how things are done. What basis do you have for making such a claim?

  19. 3 minutes ago, Shodwall cat said:

I'm not condemning him as I said it will be interesting to see how he goes.  I'm going on what Hearts fans have said about him  so yes that indeed may be a lot of bollocks.  Nothing wrong with a bit of concern over certain signings though .  That doesn't mean to say I'm going to boo the boy on to the pitch though.  I just hope that we aren't falling into the same trap as the last few seasons by signing a number of slow , small , lightweight central midfielders. Only time will tell.

True, but in these early stages I'd be inclined to trust Hartley simply because he appears to be signing players with the physical attributes we need.

He's brought in big bruisers for our centre-halfs in Dallison, Harrison & maybe Brough. He's brought in pace for the wingers / wide players in Lewis & Petravicius and I suspect Greenwood too, though I haven't seen enough of him to judge. He's also brought in a physical presence upfront in Haber & Mackin.

True, he hasn't brought in a bruiser for midfield but I'd say Paton has enough physicality to fill the enforcer role. There may even be an argument that the number ten role, which I suspect TOE and Irving will be in competition for, doesn't need pace. Or to be a heavyweight. Sibbald had neither and did well enough and the obvious example of a player with similar attributes would be the little magician.

I think Hartley's a bit more switched on in terms of recruitment than people give him credit for. The question is how many will perform as he expects them to and how  quickly will they gel?

  20. 15 minutes ago, Shodwall cat said:

A Midfielder who makes late runs into the box and scores goals would've been my preferred option.

As you haven't seen him play you have no idea whether he does either of those things.

You can't judge him from You Tube clips, given how little they show of a players overall game time. You can't judge him from (for example) a Jambo workmates opinion, because he may be able to score regularly at our level if not the Premiership.

Too many assumptions and too quick to condemn.
