I'd like to see us stick McSauce up top in these games, with Ferguson coming in from the start.

Dykes has done a solid for Scotland, but we shouldn't be sentimental here (i.e. sticking with Marshall instead of Gordon at the last tournament). Adams missed a sitter which should have got us a point in Spain. McTominay has shown himself to be a fucking goal machine, on top of the physical attributes he provides. I really hope this is something we consider.

Frankly, it's also just getting increasingly harder to justify Ferguson not starting matches. We have shoehorned Robertson and Tierney into an excellent system that works for us. I believe doing similar in this regard would strengthen us further.

Tbh I had never considered that, but now that you say it it could be a good shout. Id agree hes got the ability to do it and the physical side🤔 what a turn around that would be for him eh.

The fact his goals have come from deep is fairly obvious, hes been playing midfield 🤣 if they had been coming from being the focal point of an attack. Then he would have been the striker already🤣

Can't believe this topic starter only got 55 downvotes.

Have I to admit I got it wrong again? Nobody else can manage it once but I've to do it continually?

The results and performances at those euros weren't good, I didn't think he would be about to improve things to this extent. In hindsight would I sack Clarke after the euros? No, I wouldn't. I was wrong (im not sure what else folk are looking for tbh)

Anybody got a reliable sink? Silly bugger here gets his sinks from a subscription but forgot to renew it. Could any kind person perhaps PM me a good sink for tonight?

Im unfortunately working tonight so won't get a chance to even look at sinks. But delighted to see the sinks patter continue🤣

My opinion isn't incorrect though so why would I do the same? I'm simply pointing out you are acting in the same way you complained about when others did it to you.

Your opinion is incorrect, I suspect you know this already. However If you want to talk further about this you can pm me.

Considering you used to cry about 2426255 following you about this place because you had one opinion so bad the mods locked the thread to stop the embarrassment I think the irony might be lost on you that you're doing the same to Craig now.

Why don't you go and have a look at that thread and see me admit numerous times my opinion was incorrect.

Then let's see if you can do the same?

From experience, stating the fact that Hickey hasn't ever played a position before can be dragged up years later, once he has played that position a bit.

Except craig thats absolutely nothing close to what happened.

Now if someone had suggested Hickey could do a job at centre back and Donathan had spent 5 pages insisting he couldn't play there. Arguing against the opinions of his former coaches. And forgetting the fact hickey had actually played there.

    Then you might be closer.

Perhaps if you'd paid attention in maths lessons? You might remember "round up or down to the nearest whole number"

So if you were asked your age you would give them the year then a fraction?🤣

I dont disagree with any of that, if hes not selected ill trust that clarke has assessed it and doesn’t think he can contribute. Which is fair enough its his call.

You disagree with that @Jives Miguel

Why do you disagree that clarke should be trusted to pick his squad?

While this is obviously true - a player can't contribute if they don't get a chance - Clarke is a clever guy and I usually trust him to know if a player will fit into his team based on what he's seen of them at club level. He'll make mistakes, and maybe overlooking Gauld has been one, but imo he's earned the right to be given the benefit of the doubt.

I dont disagree with any of that, if hes not selected ill trust that clarke has assessed it and doesn’t think he can contribute. Which is fair enough its his call.

Scored vital goals? Made vital assists?

He's also shown he can fit in our system, which was the point

Would you disagree that its difficult to show you can fit a system, score goals or assist goals when your not in the squad?

We don't even really play with a proper 10

Armstrong can play on the left and right and as an 8. And he has done it for Scotland and in the Premier League. As has McGinn. And Christie. They've all won things in Scotland as well.

Ferguson has done it in serie A

There's just no debate to be had here. The MLS is not in the same conversation as these guys

Armstrong has done it for Scotland? Done what?

Its pretty different for someone to "do it" for Scotland when they don't get an opportunity.

I'm sure Steve Clarke will call him up tomorrow if he feels he is an option that can help us. Why wouldn't he?

I dont think anyone is suggesting a personal grudge.

But if Steve Clarke does or doesn't call him up tomorrow, the debate will continue wether he should or shouldn't have.

Gauld would’ve been 18 at the time, whilst Armstrong was 22. Armstrong was a better player than Gauld at that point (and still is), but most people definitely thought Gauld had a higher ceiling. One player hit their ceiling, one player didn’t get close.

You’re just arguing for the sake of arguing now tbh.

I have absolutely no idea how you could judge that armstrong is currently a better player. And I dont think you do either.

I'd say it was evident that they were signing him for potential rather than his ability at the time, to the point that it would be totally absurd to argue otherwise, considering that he made two sub appearances in his first season with them while spending the vast majority of his time with the B Team.

Its one in the same isn't it, his ability at the time would be indicative of his potential.

Its interesting they never seen that in armstrong tho.

The acid test will be tomorrow when the squad's announced. That will be the single biggest piece of evidence for or against since September's international break.

It will be evidence that he's part of clarkes thinking or not. Only that.

Gauld got his move based predominantly on potential, not purely on the ability he was showing at the time. There was the spell just before Christmas of that season where he seemed genuinely unplayable, but he dropped off a bit after that, which is natural for such a young player. Looking at the bigger picture, he only started just over half of United's games in his breakout season, while Armstrong was playing pretty much every week. When it came to the Scottish Cup final, the "star attraction" didn't get a start, with Ryan Dow being preferred to him.

We don't need to give Gauld a chance right now because the guys being asked to do that role are doing it exceptionally well. If he got a call-up, do I think he could probably come in and do a job? Yes. But do I think we are somehow overlooking some gamechanging talent here? Absolutely not. At absolute best he'd be fourth choice for his position and would get a few minutes here and there off the bench.

Apologies, I didn't realise you were part of the Sporting Lisbon scouting team and could factually quote the reasons that gauld was selected and not armstrong.

For some actual facts gauld is nearly 3 years younger than armstrong. So that would probably have an affect on their consistency and physical development. The fact gauld as a very young player didn't start a cup final where as the much older armstrong did doesn't give any indication on how they might be performing now.

What we can say is Gauld is the main man for his team. Where as Armstrong is in and out of the Southampton team. Who's the better player right now. I would guess Gauld. But without seeing them both at the same level like playing for Scotland. Its very difficult to judge.

Does Gauld deserve this chance, id say yes. Its overdue.

Would you rather live an ordinary, humdrum, bestiality-free life, or have everyone in the world know you lost your virginity to a goat before winning two World Cups for Scotland and shagging your way through half of the country?

This is interesting, I've read that book and knew that. But anyone I've ever told that to seemed to think it surely couldn't be true🤣

So in a way Garrincha has won, hes shagged a goat or 3, won World cups, shagged countless woman and nobody remembers the goats. And the goats will be long gone now to tell their story.

Unless in Brazil they all know that and think he's a weirdo💁‍♂️

Its been a long time but did he not say it was common in his village or town for the young men to do that? I think he did.

Also for a while he had to wear his boots on the wrong feet, it was an interesting book I remember that much.

Who could honestly tell if Gauld is a better option now - unless we give him one single fecking chance.

Tbf everything you've said their id agree with, but its that bit that really confuses me.

Opinions is one thing, but I just don't believe people are watching Gaulds full MLS games and then Armstrongs Southampton games and comparing them. And even if you did it would still be very hard to make a decent assessment.

But are then prepared to state categorically that armstrong is a better player than gauld🤣

Not just Craig but my mate @Gordopolis, what you on about man!

If anything Gauld is further away from a call up now than he was a week ago with Anderson committing to Scotland. Gauld has said previously he's not that arsed about it, if he gets the call he'll take it but he's not changing anything just to get a call up.

Im not sure how you could read into what gaulds said to think he's not that arsed. From what I interpret into his interviews is that it would mean the world to him. But hes never being considered so why would he worry about it.

Easy to say this in hindsight, and I get things have changed since your post.

But I think it would certainly mean alot more to him than Anderson.

  21. 5 hours ago, craigkillie said:

Anderson made 22 Premier League appearances for Newcastle last season though, and had well over 50 senior games under his belt.

Yet hasn't created anything like the same level of interest or excitement. Theres a reason for this.

Football isn't as simple as just comparing numbers.

Shock as young footballer develops into a better player over an 18 month spell that includes a transfer to a better league

Also a shock (to some) that a completely ambidextrous player can play right back as well as left.

Also its not at all the case, he went to Brentford and was a starter immediately. If you think at that point Taylor was the superior player fair enough. But it would be a pretty minority view I would imagine.
