A lot of good points made already.

Bigger countries than us maximise how the eligibility pool works for them.

Even if our team is good now, at the end of our last spell of consistently qualifying, all of the team dispersed at once and gave us a mountain to climb.

It's important when we're doing well that we continue to improve the team, rather than stand still.

For context, he scored two more (13) goals than the rest of the Scots in the Premier League put together last season. (Adams 5, Armstrong 2, Cooper, McGinn, McTominay, Christie).

In fairness that last point is a pretty good one. I was on the fence but thats swayed me. Get him in Steve!!

Fair enough question and you're right that it is all speculation, but I do think your insistence that there is "no way" we can know how someone feels about something is fallacious. Behaviour is and always will be the best indicator of how someone feels about something. Harvey Barnes' availability has been known for a while and he hasn't made any steps towards our national team set-up. We can draw conclusions from this.

The difference between parent and grandparent. Our parents are our main primers for behaviours and attitudes. The best predictor for how we turn out is how our parents engage with us and the wider world. The obvious difference is when we are brought up by our grandparents, but that's rare. Growing up in England with a Scottish parent, the chances are that you'll have a set of scottish grandparents too, as well as an uncle or aunt or two. There are high chances that you'll go and visit Scotland and create a connection with the specific place that they live. Having a Scottish parent leaves you in no doubt that you're a child of two places and you'll also get those messages from childhood onwards, both from within and without your family.

Our psychological survival apparatus conditions us to tie our identity with those of our parents (and then later the larger tribe) which is why I'm completely at ease with international eligibility being determined by parental link. I will always be a bit uneasy about the grandparent rule, but I do concede that Adams has confounded my previous scepticism surrounding his commitment.

E.T.A. I just read @No_Problemo's post above and I didn't realise Barnes had two Scottish grandparents.

The granny thing could be very important. If he can sing "you canny shove your granny off a bus" without any coaching that would for me be enough.

None of the above. It’s because he’s nearly 26 years old now and is buried behind Saka, Rashford, Grealish, Foden, Sterling, Maddison, Bowen, Eze and possibly others for a wing spot with England. To put it bluntly, like Angus Gunn before him, he wanted to give it every chance to see if he could be an England player. And only after getting to mid 20s and realising he’s not quite good enough, only then would he consider Scotland.

Of course the romantics among us want every player in the squad to be Scotland through and through but personally I’ve got no problem with this approach as long as he fully commits 100% to the team after declaring for Scotland.

Well no mate, what you have written is also a guess. Unless you know him personally?

But thats probably/possibly a part of it too. Or all of the things I mentioned and you did may be a factor.

Its about the timing for me, start of the qualifiers id have been all for it. Now well im not against it but I can definitely see and feel that argument.

One important goal or good performance that makes a difference and im all in tho🤣

No, we can't. There is nothing "educated" about baseless speculation.

Im not sure its baseless, if someone has been asked numerous times before and now wants to come on board. Its a decent guess that its due to our likely qualification. And up turn in performances. Rather than love for Scotland eh? So I dont think its its unfair to speculate there jumping on the band wagon.

Tbh im not sure how I feel about it, id have been alot more comfortable if say he had made himself available at the start of the qualifiers.

Im up for improving the team tho and was well up for Adams and Gunn. And he's a good player who would definitely give us something. So I just don't know.

It’s good when people tap you up. I’ll bet it helped plug a gap tonight. I’m basin that on what I’ve seen. You’d be right to put these people on a pedestal. Just don’t overflow with praise, they’ll end up having pipe dreams.

Man, how am I meant to reply🤣

You've done them all, a pun plethora

I was touting him for the job because if Steve Clarke was to leave* then I’d want someone from within the tent to continue the current feel good factor.

    * I actually think at the age of 60, Clarke could be our manager for some time yet. I can’t see him wanting to take a club job at his age but also not sure he will want to retire. I expect him to stick around at least through the World Cup qualifying campaign if not euro 2028.

And how do you know that would be the case? We only hear on brand media output and have little to no idea how he is perceived within the squad.

Personally I would want someone with the relevant experience instead.

@craigkillie is normally an excellent poster on Scotland stuff but he’s having a nightmare here. Why on earth would you tie yourself in knots to character assassinate a guy who’s helped us to score 12 in 18 from set pieces?

    Hes having a nightmare?

On the last page you were touting this guy for the Scotland job with absolutely zero credentials 🤣

For the record im not saying Austin MacPhee is a "weird egotistical guy" I dont know him. Just that I thought he was a bit over the top in that interview.

  8. 1 minute ago, velo army said:

I honestly don't think he does, and remember that it will be a longer interview that is edited by someone not named Austin McPhee, so you're reading what the editor thinks is germane. It's an article about how Austin McPhee's involvement with the national team has transformed our set pieces. I don't know how he's supposed to respond to that, and we also don't know what questions he was asked or what prompts.

I think he comes across as self-aware. I know you're not saying this, but Craig using McPhee describing himself as Clarke's assistant (he said he was one of them and it would be daft to argue that he isn't) as evidence of him being up his own arse is a bit silly.

McPhee may be an arrogant arsehole, I have no idea, but the idea that we shouldn't trust people who talk themselves up is little Scotlander thinking.

Little scotlander thinking, are you picking up the discarded @Satoshi batton🤣

I get what your saying, were just reading different things into it. I think some of that stuff would be great for him to point out in a job interview rather than a media interview.

Is it possible you have been taken in by the hair and love of a confident man?

It certainly didn't affect his performance against Spain in March anyway.

Well thats impossible to say, what we do know is less match sharpness will affect performance. So he may have been able to play better had he been playing regularly.

He would also have lasted the full 90 mins rather than have to be subbed off.

So yeah it absolutely affected that performance.

Keiran Tierney himself on his match fitness. So we can clarify if there was any further doubt that not playing regular football does affect performances.

Looking forward to seeing him play even better for us.

“Last season was difficult, but in the first half of it I was still playing in the cups and the Europa League.

“It was only later, with the games week by week, that I started to lose some match fitness.

“I’d then report for Scotland duty and was playing a bit of catch up.

He didn't write it though. He may have been only asked questions about his role as it's so specialist.

Its a strange day, 2nd time im agreeing with craig🤣

He does come across as a bit of a blowhard tbh.

When I saw this thread at the top I feared he was leaving.

If Clarke was to go I’d genuinely have MacPhee as one of the candidates to replace him.

On what basis? Good at talking about himself a lot and holds a clipboard well?

See we agree occasionally, thats a bizzare post🤣

I more meant when he was playing pretty poorly in a dreadful Norwich team and had the stuffing knocked out of him slowly over a year.

It takes time to work through shit like that even without criminal level creeps stalking you.

Great to see him approaching potential.

Yeah you never know whats going on behind the scenes eh. Those Norwich fans will be looking pretty foolish right now.

  13. 1 hour ago, The Algebraist said:

He had a big blip, albeit at a very young age, but seems to have learned and come back stronger for it. Football's issue at the moment is it lacks even a modicum of patience.

If Brighton win today it's a big statement about him and them. Says a lot about West Ham as well. Sit tight, build, talent will out.

I dont think patience has anything to do with it, nobody was blaming Gilmour.

I think people could see how good he was and were perplexed and concerned, as we want our best players playing. As that's how hes going to make the most of himself.

I've not seen todays game tbh but it sounds promising.

Also points to our depth in certain positions, similarly full back and even approaching that at center half too.

If we could just find another top class keeper and a goal machine upfront I'd be quietly confident of impressing at the euros.

Centre half? Were doing great, but cmon man. We don't have one centre back playing at a good team?

Its an area where we're hoping people come through as well.

Or maybe referring to Rangers as Glasgow? Or even 'The'

Greenock against Mirren is always a tasty affair

Maybe you enjoy watching Midlothian, or perhaps South or even Park.

His joke may have been weak but your argument is rubbish

I have absolutely no idea what your talking about🤣🤣🤣

Using one of 2 words isn't the same as splitting 1 word in half. That was my argument.

If someone in Spain wants to call morton greenock, rangers the, and st mirren mirren. I would be ok with that, wouldn't give the smallest of shits.

  16. 15 minutes ago, Alan Twelve said:

Ffs, Sociedad is the equivalent of referring to Hibs as Ernian. It's not what they're called. Why is that so fucking hard for people to comprehend?

Anyway, as I said, I just wanted to make a shit joke, so I'll bow out of this one here.

Not really Real Sociedad isn't one word. Its like referring to greenock morton as morton, which is exactly what people do.

Or Glasgow rangers as rangers and so on
