Specifically on bonds (interviewee is German so is using the context of the Eurozone but the principle is universal):

This is maybe more what you're looking for, though. A direct debate on the two contrasting views - either that public debt should be a major concern or that it shouldn't be: https://www.rosalux.de/en/news/id/50220/central-banks-never-run-out-of-their-own-money

My current position is towards the idea of public debt being less of a concern. Partly because I've seen more right wing governments consistently wrack up far more public debt during their time in office (due to their tax cuts). That's despite the right wing being the ones who always claim public debt matters. Which suggests to me they don't actually believe in what they preach as they certainly don't practice it. Instead they're just looking to create public consent for their austerity policies.

I understand what you were referring to now.  Thank you.

It’s been a very long time since I studied economics but I think the general current opinion with regards to the UK Government debt appears to be that as a % of GDP the interest payments are historically quite low.

Regardless of all this I remember reading an article that looked at how the UK Governemnet could pay off all debts.  Effectively we can’t.  The increase in taxes required over an extended period of 30-50 years would result in a very significant recession.

If you're a sovereign currency issuer like UK are, public debt is owed to yourself, therefore shouldn't be thought of the way we think of private debt.

Sorry, I’m not sure I understand.

The UK government predominately sells bonds to the market, therefore the money is ultimately owed to the institutions that buy the gilts.

It is important to keep government debt manageable.  Much like private debt the more the UK borrows the more it will have to pay each year in interest payments.  I think it’s currently roughly £100 billion ish in annul interest payments.  To put that in perspective I think a little more is spent on education and roughly half is spent on defence.

It also become a significant problem if a government is assessed as having borrowed too much as this will negatively affect the country’s credit rating making future borrowing more difficult and expensive.

I had a feeling we would get beat even at 2-0 up. From memory chanting that same chant against Hearts a couple of times and at St Johnstone then we throw away 3 pts. Complacent from players attempting to defend a lead which isn't a good idea when our back 3 is slow and poor as well as players missing. I reckon this does come down to the fans as well. The "Ultras" in the Derry I know that they are 10 or whatever but there is still another half of football to be played. Hearts are on form and many points ahead of 4th and yet fans reckon they are falling apart and that is at 0-0. Dundee are the team constantly falling apart after a lead and players and a section of fans don't seem to be learning and realising this.

Bit harsh on the South East Section?  It’s just the usual wind up fans do to each other during games but I take your point.  I say fair play to them trying to create an atmosphere.

It just so happens Love Will Tear Us Apart is one of my favourite songs so maybe I’m biaised on this one.

Handball could and should be very simple.

Did the player, in the opinion of the referee, deliberately handle the ball?

If yes, direct free-kick or a penalty if in the box, and a yellow card, or a red if it prevented a goal or a clear opportunity.

If no, get on with the fucking game.

I do not come onto a Dundee v Hearts thread to read a well considered post!  I actually think it takes a bit away from the game when you see defenders having to defend in their box with their hands behind their back.

In fairness our defending leading to the penalty was not too clever either.

To me, Dundee look like a top 6 team going forward and a bottom 3 team defensively. In the 7 games since Christmas 15 goals conceded and 0 clean sheets.

Hopefully, an entertaining, high-scoring game and home win.

That just about sums it up just now, however, we are missing Portales and Lamie.

  6. I have to agree with the criticism of the defence.  Although Shankland is a class act he’s not Messi and should not be waltzing through the centre of our defence like he did yesterday.

At the other end Robinson should have scored with his header.  The fact he didn’t even get it on target was incredibly poor.

No. Today I was at a 100th birthday party so had to watch on a stream. If it was on the Shankly side of the middle, I could guess who it was though!

First off, celebrating someone reaching a 100 years is definitely a good enough reason to miss Dens for a day - I hope the star of the day had a great time.

Yeh, roughly that area.  I get the fact that fans get frustrated with game management, especially with what has happened this season, but I think Doc has already earned our full support at the games.

I remember about 6 months into his tenure, Hartley was high in the Cardiff list of potential managers , very rare for someone to get head hunted after 5 or 6 months in a job

I sure hope you’re right WJ.  Thinking logically about it I think Doc should continue his managerial journey with Dundee.  All going well for him, in a couple of years time he should easily be able to land a far bigger and better job than Aberdeen if he wanted.

  9. With regards to the theory Hibs will just become a feeder club - does that theory not ignore the fact that any Hibs player would have to agree to be sold to Bournemouth?  A Hibs player on a 2 year deal would still be free to refuse such a move and wait on a bigger club coming in with a better deal or simply remain at Hibs.

I understand Hibs may end up with more loan player from Bournemouth but if they are not as good as the players already at Easter Road presumably they will not get significant game time.
