I'm watching Chelsea v Arsenal and I would like to revoke my earlier comment with regards to keepers trying to play like Pirlo.

Sanchez has just played it straight to Rice who scores for Arsenal and Raya got away with a similar faux pas for Arsenal 10 mins earlier. So even the £100K per week keepers feck it up too.

Just watched the game back,  was Rae totally to blame, he seemed to pass to McMaster who was slow to react and the rest was just a mess....  watch it back..

  2. Decent game in horrendous conditions,  both teams tried to zip the ball about,  over the 90 QP were the better side,  passing and movement in midfield was very good and kept us quiet for long spells,  I never really felt that both teams really went for it, don't know if that is down to style of play and being overcoached..

If you carried out a weird science type project you could maybe get a decent side between the two of them...

  3. The league doesn't lie and we have 13 points after the first quarter,   I tend to look at recent results and performances and they have been a struggle to be honest,, I think Rhys knows we have players probably playing a level above themselves therefore if we have the ball you cannot score mantra until of course we gift the ball to the opposition.

Tonight showed our main issue and flaws and that is the midfield and setup,  Queens passed through our lines all night, that was there strength and played a much more drilled possession based passing game than we did..

Playing with a deep lying midfielder and 2 wingers on a big pitch, leaves a hell of a lot of ground to make up for your attacking mid and sole striker,  it is easy to understand why chances and therefore goals are at a premium.

The subs Telfer and Todorov especially were very good,  Telfers speed of passing and mobility instantly improved our midfield and Todorov with his energy and the ability to win and compete for second balls,  Gall is Gall, he scores goals and sometimes not a lot else,  could we somehow shoehorn Todorov up top beside Gall and sacrifice McGregor,  and introduce Telfer in front of Aiken,  doubt it will happen Rhys seems determined to play with 2 wide players all the time..

We need to change it up, use the squad or we will be very lucky to get 13 points on the next quarter.

  4. Time for the champion elect to show their teeth, starting tonight against the jolly old Queens..

I would make a few changes tonight, remember we were pretty abject last time out against Ayr,

    Rae

    Megwa

    Watson

    Fordyce

    Hancock

    Aiken

    Telfer

    Frizzell

    McStravick

    Gallagher

    McGregor..

In my opinion McGill has offered nothing most of the season,  our chance creation and execution is very poor and to that matter him with McStravick  and I would replace McMaster with Telfer,   No need for a defensive mid, when Fordyce, Rae et all play keep ball, it is a wasted position and we need a more positive player in the side for that reason..

You’re not wrong. Every major decision in the last 3 years has been taken from the following decision-making stance:-

Option a) to do the very best for the club we need to be bold, brave and business savvy, or

option b) just get Willie on the phone and he’ll fix it. In exchange, he can take what he wants. And arse-kissing, lots of arse-kissing.

Can Queens Park if they so wish,  say to our Willie,  thanks pal but GTF..

Or is the club so reliant on his business acumen, that if he does go he will take the fillings out your teeth as part of the process .

A defeat at Airdrie and this can’t go on. Can have all the grand plans in the world, but if it’s tanking on the field at first team level, the whole thing falls apart.

Willie Haughey is managing a Celtic select at St Roch’s today. A conversation with Neil Lennon wouldn’t be out of the question.

The Airdrie game will be very interesting or a complete borefest with McCabe and Veldman having a dick swinging contest to see who has the best football philosophy of passing the ball aimlessly around the back four.....

Queens don't seem in great fettle (going by posts mainly on here)   Airdrie have there own issues lowest scorers in League and lowest attempts on goal  also,  but we have lead the league on completed passes....   Bring on a 4 - 4 Friday night thriller...

I'm not sure I've ever had the misfortune of hearing Haughey speak before or reading anything he's said, but this is exactly the sort of tired, riddy-inducing grandpa patter I would have expected.

What's the honest opinion of Haughey is /has he been good for the club or short term relative success is going to lead to a survival battle when he gets fed up,

as long as oor Willie makes money he seems to be happy..

Not been on since Saturday and it’s been a refreshing read with loads of positive and constructive opinions.

For me personally I just took it for granted we would still create enough opportunities and score a lot of goals due to how we played and who was on the park. It was the defensive frailties I was worried about (as I think most of us were). I pictured most of our games being high scoring affairs this season.

The Hamilton games showed how tough it would be create chances though and I don’t think I gave that enough notice due to the occasion. Even throwing more bodies forward goals will be much harder to come by this season.

I could be wrong here but I think McCabe recognises that and this possession football is as much to protect the game from defeat as it is to create chances. Especially with no real additions to the defence other than Hancock. The slow play doesn’t help going forward but it stifles the opposition. Dundee Utd being the perfect example. We never really looked overly threatening but we never looked out of the game either. I think this is how our season will go. We won’t see the naivety that got us some doings last season but we are not going to score the 3+ goals we were accustomed to last year unless we have a clinical day in front of goal. Most games will be decided by the odd goal and that’s not something we are necessarily used to.

Again I may be wrong but I think most of us expected to be handed a few doings and also hand out some surprise doings. I don’t think many envisaged a season were most games will be tight and separated by the odd goal. Raith and Morton will consider themselves unlucky and we will consider ourselves unlucky in a lot of games this season.

There is a few players I thought would step up a level rather easily who haven’t and there are a few I thought would struggle that have surpassed my expectations. We are a lot more worried about McGill now than last season yet a lot more positive about Telfer than we were last season. Could say the same about a few more.

Great post,  pretty much spot on

Agree with most that has been said and note that @Passionate has even had the audacity to criticise McMaster. That apart there were other real poor performances.

Gabby's work rate is never in question but is really struggling and serious concerns that he's simply not good enough.

Megwa replacing Ballantyne was a massive downgrade even though he did improve as the game went on, and of course it's far too early to write him off. Ballantyne arguably our best player this season was a major loss so lets hope his injury isn't too serious.

Gal had an absolute mare as nothing stuck with him all game and he never linked anything due to being completely out muscled by McGinty. Lucky to finish the 90!

Frizz and Aiken were only average yesterday which highlighted how important they are when their high standards drop a tad.

When we play the very slow passing about the back 4, totally nullifies the strengths of McMaster as he plays too close  , Fordyce et al have to feed the ball much much quicker through the midfield,   and he should probably have been subbed earlier,  Telfer gave us a far better option when he came on....  Deano was poor last week against Morton as well,   we have a decent 'sized" squad, I think Rhys has to change things up again,

I wouldn't say that Gabby had a good game today but I would venure to say that it was more down to lack of service to him in my opinion. To say that he has been poor all season is again an over-reaction as far as I'm concerned. Cast your mind back to the wonderful link up play of his that led to Gal's goal against Raith.

I've never thought of Gabby as a wide player anyway, I believe that he performs at his best through the middle.

Gabby has been poor,  a cameo deflected goal against Partick and link up for the Raith goal admittedly, we are 8 games in now,  I agree our style of football this season doesn't suit him, he isn't technically good enough, that's what is catching him out,  you put McGill on as an attacking sub with 20 to go and you get a different player.....

McCabe when he plays gets more out of McGill as he plays the ball forward quicker into the channels,  we either want to be this wonderful side that scores the perfect goal,  or change it up a little playing more to players strengths.. That first half keep ball exercise between Watson ,Rae, Fordyce and Hancock was pointless and served no purpose,  we have the least amount of shots on target in the league,  you don't shoot, you don't score....

Thought that was the the worst we’ve played this season other than Arbroath. A real lack of urgency killed us there. We’re at our best when we’re attacking teams quickly and playing with a bit of tempo. Our tempo wasn’t too bad to start with but after Ayr scored we barely played with any bar maybe a 10 minute spell before and after our goal. Ayr sat off us and shut off any space well but still thought they were very gettable.

Ballantyne going off unsettled us and we never really recovered from that. Megwa struggled and looked nervous when he first came on and was really poor at the goal in terms of giving the ball away and not stopping the cross. Only his debut so hopefully he’ll get better with time, some coaching and experience. But if Ballantyne stays on, who knows maybe we don’t concede that first goal and it ends up being a different game.

Thought Hancock probably showed up best for us. McStravick too at least tried to give us a bit of impetus and go forward which we badly needed. He put in a couple of superb crosses just begging for a centre forward to get on the end of. Perfect for Todorov who again I thought should have been on earlier.

Worst thing about this is having to face going to work in Ayr on Monday 😕

Pretty good assessment,  we always try to score the perfect goal, but on days like this, you have to earn the right to play, we didn't,   McGill yet again was I will be fair hopeless,  and has offered nothing all season.  Mcmaster who is the new housewives favourite offers nothing when we go a joal down, he doesn't have enough creativity, when he went off we began to get Telfer on the ball and advance and create a couple of 'chances' .   Ayr were up for the game from the first whistle and deserved the 3 points,   Todorov looked lively and a different option which we badly needed, but should have been brought on at least 20 mins earlier.

The players have a bit of credit in the bank, but not too much...

Fantastic achievement and opportunity for both of them. It’s only one squad but anything that can enhance the club’s reputation for developing players and proving them a platform to move up the way, can only be a good thing in terms of attracting players and suitors for said players 😉

Who was our last youth international? Tony Watt? Assuming they all play ATS, McStravick, Devenny and Clarke is quite the collection of international caps* for the one season.

I know they’re not full internationals (apart from ATS) but you know what I mean*.

Not sure if Tony Watt was capped at 21 level with is,  the last one before him  was Paul Bonar I think that's going back to around 96.

    "act of cowardice"!?

I get "despicable" and I previously used inappropriate, I'd also say unacceptable but you're going a bit far with that first one.

In relation to setting the wrong tone by putting him in the first team squad for the Saturday that's a football decision by the manager and would no doubt have been made after discussion with the owner about the sending off incident. They maybe didn't see the need to deal with it beyond the outcome of their internal discipline procedure and the automatic SFA ban. I'm not placed to know what these discussions were so I'll leave it at that. Maybe we could get the laddie put in some stocks for the next home game and you can throw rotten fruit at him if it makes you feel better about it.

Maybe my morals are slightly different to yours,  pulling an Airdrie shirt on representing the club is an honour in my book.      And that is the last I will say on the matter..

It did happen. The club have dealt with the matter internally and he served his automatic suspension in respect of the red card, although it may be the case that a disciplinary committee at Hampden look further into the nature of the offence due to the language used.

From what I gather the laddie was absolutely distraught immediately after the match for what was a throwaway comment which he accepts was entirely inappropriate and has put his hands up and apologised. He's a young boy and while there is no place for language such as that used I don't see any need to hang him out to dry for it. Some of us courtesy of education and upbringing know the sort of language that should never be used, while others perhaps need a bit of help to understand that. I'm not saying that this is necessarily the case here but let's not jump to the stage of offering the boy up as some kind of sacrificial lamb given we don't really know him. Hopefully he's learned from this.

Another unfortunate situation,  There is no excuse for ' ignorance' , I am sure he is full of remorse blah blah blah,   Mud sticks rightly or wrongly in Football,   glad the club have dealt with it Internally and I wouldn't be surprised if a lengthy ban ensues,  a Kilsyth Rangers player received a 10 game ban for using the same 'despicable' language against an opponent recently,  different leagues and level I know....

What really sticks in my throat is 4 days after his act of cowardice in the 7 nil reserve dribbling by Livingston,  he was promoted to first team duty for the game against Dundee United..   That is setting the wrong tone,  surely....

Apologies, I'd only heard he was sent off for a bit of colourful language, called someone a "m*ngo" and that's what he was sent off for. I have absolutely no idea if that's got anything to do with him not being seen btw so I can't comment on that. In actual fact, I hadn't even noticed he was missing tbh.

I hope the club deal with this in the strongest possible fashion,  if the alleged remark was made and was the reason for his red card,  a couple of quid fine from the players night out fund is not enough punishment, and the player should not be 'rewarded' with involvement in the first team ,  that should b unacceptable conduct and the player should be subject to internal club discipline process....

Don't see why the results matter, it's there to give senior players minutes if needed and ensure guys like Dunlop, Cassidy, G Gallagher are still playing some games. We'll probably find at certain points in the season it will seem pretty useless, but at other times it will be essential if we have a few players coming back from injury and needing games.

I'd assume there's also a longer term plan and the next couple of seasons are just about reestablishing it and we'll take a few tankings in the meantime. Like I say though, why anyone would actually care about reserve scorelines is a mystery to me.

Results don't really matter, but individual performances and improvement do,  but if you are being set up to be cannon fodder against Premier League reserves there isn't much point is there,   I thought the whole idea was to get injured players minutes, it did against Dundee with Telfer and Watson playing,    We are carrying a decent sized squad,  I don't understand how Todorov, McStravick, Megwa are not topping up their fitness or trying to get some confidence in front of goal in these games,    It's all about progression for young players to try and earn a first team shot,  looks like a costly exercise is it worth it

Great win on Sat, good to see us get points away from home and be able to hang on to a lead after scoring early on! Would've bitten your hand off for 4 wins out of the first 7 games, 2 very winnable home games coming up in the next weeks as well confidence got to be high in the camp.

On a side note seen Gavin Gallagher has been missing from the squad last couple of weeks, anyone heard of any murmurs of an incident during a reserve game recently?

He was sent off in the 7 nil trouncing by Livi in the first reserve game,  suspended for the next game the draw with Dundee I believe,  in between times after his red card he was promoted to start in first team against Univ of Stirling,  since then he hasn't made the squad, which is what happens when you carry a reasonable sized squad..   The lad is knowhere near ready to be anywhere near a championship 11.

I’ll be honest, I thought losing the playoff final to Queen’s Park was a massive missed opportunity. The year before that the team that lost to Morton in the final was nowhere near good enough for the Championship but Murray’s last squad was excellent and we’d likely have kept Easton and Smith would still have been in contract. The guys that have stayed since then and the young lads brought in by McCabe have done so well and, while it’s still a long season to go and we should still be keeping an eye on the teams below us, we’ve had as solid a start as anyone could have hoped for in terms of establishing ourselves in this division.

Good post,  we have to stay humble we are doing well at the moment, form etc can turn on a blow of a whistle.

The squad is at 21 (was last week) although a couple in that group are complete novices e g.  Dunlop and G Gall,  we still have the annoying Keeper backup situation,  let's be honest that should have been sorted long before now ..

"Quality signings" was a quote from the manager in the close season..

I think all the guys and gals that actually go to the games 😁are enjoying it and are strapped in for the ride, wherever it takes us..

Onto yesterday and Cappielow was actually decent enough, last time I was there was in the stand and the kneecapping was all I could remember..

Hasn't changed much if at all since the days of Nipper Lawrence putting them to the sword..  Storm Agnes didn't really materialise I think it was just standard Greenock fair..  back to the comfort of the Excelsior next week ,  spoiled...

  19. Good 3 points hard place to go,  unusual game,  Airdrie didn't have to be great,  but we seem a lot.more durable than at times last season with largely the same personnel.  We still overplay it a little too much,  goalscoring opportunities are few and far between, and that Achilles heel could well haunt us as the season goes on..

Morton have some good players ,  they seemed to me a little short of sharpness all over the park, where as we were very sharp,  Cappielow is a hard place to go and get a result...

Not really sure what happened to McGregor at Morton last year,  still just a young lad, and is improving and seems in a decent place now,  l Took his goal well, which is one of his weaknesses..

As strip's go that Away kit must be up there with the best...

  20. 1 minute ago, cb_diamond said:

Yeah, I concur here, was planning to head down today, checked the weather forecast, decided against it.

Genuine question for the Morton fans, the away fans being in the WDE must cost you considerable money between autumn and spring with the regular crappy weather putting droves of folks off. Has there ever been talk of changing/covering it? I know the cost would be a huge barrier but the cost of lost income from stay aways in the last few decades must be much, much more?

    Screenshot_20230930-105010.png

Come on, that's the delights of football,   for years we have been slagging off our stadium as soulless etc,  longing for the days of the terracing etc,  we get an old skool day at Morton and we moan...about a bit of rain. 😉😉

  21. Another positive that hasn't been picked up on is our impressive increase on the home support..

Under Bollan,  EWB and for most of Murray's tenure our home support was between 650 and 800 max I would say,  since Rhys has came in a steady increase due no doubt to word of mouth due to winning games and scoring goals,  bringing the feel good factor back,  culminating in this season with probably 1200 maybe slightly more home fans coming to the games, a rough 70 percent increase.   That's decent and the club deserves credit for this , we have came a long way from sub 500 crowds on boxing Day, that we had a good few years back.

What is our ceiling home crowd wise though,  IMO not much more than we have..

We will never get the crowds of Dunfermline,  Partick etc
